If your family is starting the journey with a holiday puppy this season, I would like to urge you to contact a trainer sooner than later. The sooner the better, trust me on this one!
Those sweet 2 month old babes will be 4, 6, 8, 10 months before you know it. Starting to build your foundation early, will make life easier in the long run.
Enjoy those puppy dogs eyes, and that puppy breath. I hope the holiday season has been glorious for everyone.

Life has been, quite frankly, overwhelmingly wild for the last year. Some new and exciting things are in the works for the future of my business, but for today I wanted to run a few ideas by everyone for your feedback.

What’s on my mind, you ask?

1. I need some practice/brushing up on my virtual coaching. I was thinking about a limited run of packages of 4 at a discounted rate. This would, of course, help with the training cost for you while it also helps me iron out how best to conduct virtual sessions.
2. I’m thinking about filming some webinars that would be over specific topics.
3. What about a monthly subscription style format for self paced training?
I would need to finalize what this looks like.
Current thoughts: After a form is filled out with your needs, I send you “assignments” once a week, we would be able to communicate through the week regarding questions you had. You would submit video of what you’re working on, and I would come back with feedback.

If you have the time and energy to add your two cents, please let me know what your thoughts are on my possibly moving forward with one or all of these things.
If you would prefer to send that feedback privately, shoot me an email

Also, please enjoy this precious house hippo that just completed his puppy foundations program.

Max had his second lesson this week. Max was very frightened of me during our consultation. “Big Max” and I are now good buddies, and he’s making quick progress through his program.
Look at those puppy dog eyes as he offers his “place” behavior. 😍

Lilly finished out her puppy foundation program. Sisters Sophie and Lucy also got certificates for their dedication to supervision over my teaching. 😂
Such a fun crew to work with, and I’ll miss them terribly.

Because some big & exciting things are in the works!
I will try to do better, I know folks love to see these pups from week to week as they grow and learn.
We have 2 weeks of Wilson, who’s just a joy to work with. He loves to learn and is picking up on his foundations very quickly!
And we have Lilly (pup), and her supervisor Lucy, plus sister Sophie. Lucy likes to help me work with Lilly, while Sophie like to wrestle with her during breaks between demonstrations.

My dog with big feelings, ready to watch the Dogs with Big Feelings conference. I absolutely love continuing education, and it’s something I spend a lot of time on. I can always count on learning something new and/or being reminded of things I’ve forgotten.
I hope everyone has a fantastic Saturday! Do your best to stay cool, is a scorcher out there.

Teaching your dog new tricks and/or practicing the tricks they already know is a fantastic way to exercise those brains and bodies.
Something to keep in mind- it’s all technically tricks. Sit, roll over, down, mat work, recalls, spin, high 5, wait/stay: these skills are also “tricks” when it comes right down to it.

Hide & Seek//
This can be played in a few different ways. Here are two:
1. Traditionally, like we did as kids. You’ll need two humans, one to keep the dog busy and one to hide, unless your dog has a very solid Stay in place. You’ll simply “hide” somewhere in the house, call your dog’s name (or use your Recall cue) and have a treat party when they find you!
2. Is closer to nose work games. You’ll hide treats around the house, gradually building the difficulty. Tell your dog to “go find” / “search” / “seek” etc. Your dog will be having fun, working their noses, working their brains, and you’ll have fun watching them play the game!

More on ditching the food bowl:
Feeding your dog on a snuffle mat is a fantastic form of enrichment, and very easy for us humans to set up. The act of sniffing/searching will keep brains busy, and also bring down stress levels.
*Similar to breathing exercises for us*
Don’t have a snuffle mat? You can use a shaggier bathroom rug, DIY one out of old material, OR just use the grass in the cooler morning hours!

Ditch the food bowl:

Opt instead for using and old shipping box and crumpled paper. Simply sprinkle the food into your enrichment box and let your dog have breakfast (or a snack) while working their nose and brain.
You can make this activity more difficult over time by rolling some kibble into the paper you’ll put in the bigger box.
Have a dog that’s small or has limited mobility? You can use a shallow box or put the crumpled paper on their bed or in their kennels.
“Hunting” for their food is a great way to start the day!

It is hotter than a Havanese outside! Over the coming weeks I am going to share some fun INDOOR activities you can do to help keep those doggy brains active and exercised.
There are going to be days that it’s just too miserable to take our dogs on many outdoor adventures, Oklahoma Summer can be down right dangerous.
While no one wants a 🌭, we also don’t want to have a bored dog finding ways to make their own fun, like eating the drywall or digging holes into the sofa.
Most of the ideas I plan to share with you will be either cheap or, even better, FREE!

I got to see Dermot and Orla before I left town to visit my brother. In the chaos of packing and such, I forgot to share these sweet faces.
We are slowly adding more tips/tricks to our door manners program with this pair.
When dogs (or humans, for that matter) have been practicing behaviors for years, we always have to remember that learning a different way will take some time.
Be patient with your dogs, be patient with yourselves, the changes you’re looking for will come in time with practice.

Today’s Sessions:

Orla & Dermot are continuing their manners work for guests. I promise I hadn’t been beating Dermot, that’s just what his face looks like. 😂

Luna is continuing to build on her foundation behaviors and learning manners like not mouthing kids that run through the house.

We also had an impromptu discussion about body language and consent checks with dogs. After I patted her in an area she wasn’t interested in, and her ears + tail flattened to her body. Dogs are always speaking to us, we just have to learn their language. ❤️

After a little hiatus, Ricky had his graduation today. We learned about stays and going to bed on cue. The goal for Ricky is to be able to get on his bed and stay so guests can come inside without this cute little jumping bean meeting them at the door.
Be a good boy, Ricky. Your mom and dad will tell me if you’re not! 😂❤️

Session #2, Luna:
Luna started a package to learn all about being the best family dog she can be. We will be working on her foundation behaviors and manners over the coming weeks. Luna was adopted from Second Chance here in town.
It’s always a bonus when I walk into a home a see familiar faces from the past. Luna’s mom was a client from my former life of being a hairstylist!

First session of the day, Dermot & Orla:
We are working on manners when guests come to the door. We are teaching some incompatible behaviors, working with a Dermot on some stranger danger feelings, and management to use in the meantime.
I have worked with these kids in the past, and I’m very excited to coach the family through this new “project”, as their mom called it.

Ricky learned all about leash walking yesterday. Leash manners can be a long and frustrating process, but worth every minute of work you put in.

Charlie learned about her Recalls today. I tried to tell her to stop looking like I’ve been beating her. She said, “that’s just what my face looks like today!”

Everyone enjoy the weekend, and this lovely weather. Take your pups out for an adventure!

Positive Training for a Positive Experience

After four years of using all of my free time fostering and volunteering for the benefit of dogs, I found myself employed by the second largest rescue in Oklahoma. What I learned about myself over this period of employment is that my heart is just too tender to watch dogs having to be displaced from their homes for one reason or another.

I began to notice a pattern, more often than not, these dogs all shared one thing in common. Untrained dogs with behavioral issues are those most often looking for a new home. Adorable 8-10 week old puppies turn into wild 8-10 month old puppies. All puppies need guidance and it’s never too late to start.

So, my next logical move was to help people keep their dogs and I planned to do so through positive reinforcement training. I accepted a position training dogs in a corporate environment and dove in head first. When I wasn’t physically at work, I was reading, taking classes with fellow trainers with my dog, Wiley, and I was watching her behavioral issues lessen and our relationship strengthen.

To date, I have helped train over 300 pet owners to work as a team with their dogs. To date, I’ve kept all of these dogs out of our local shelters and in the comfort of their homes with the family they love.
