Though it is not yet National Pet Dental Health Month (February!) we wanted to share some images from a recent dental procedure we did.

Our sweet Papillon friend, Elton came in for a routine dental cleaning due to a buildup of tartar on his teeth. During his pre-cleaning radiographs a tooth root abscess was discovered (see image below). Elton was showing no symptoms of this infection - but dental infections can wreak havoc in the body affecting both kidney and heart functions.

Luckily we were able to eliminate this risk to Elton’s health due to his owners diligence in routine yearly dental cleanings. Elton went home with one less tooth, but a happy clean mouth!

Happy National Veterinary Technician Week! I couldn’t to my job without my hard working technicians and staff. Their work is a labor of love and often under appreciated. So thank a vet tech if you see one!

As a follow up from yesterday, we wanted to share a reminder of the dangers of walking your dogs on hot asphalt.

If you cannot hold your bare hand on the asphalt for at least seven seconds, then it is too hot for your dogs bare paws!
Paw pads can burn easily, much like the image we've shared below. We recommend walking your dog at the coolest parts of the day (sunrise and sunset) and opting for walks or hikes in grasslands. Ensure they have fresh water available at all times and the ability to rest in the shade if you are out and about!

We think its important to share some information during this dangerous heat wave.

It is never okay to leave your pet in a hot car while you are doing errands. Please leave them home! It takes only minutes for your pet to develop heat stroke - heat stroke can have potentially fatal consequences. Leaving the windows cracked in your vehicle will do nothing to lower the temperature in your vehicle, neither will parking in the shade.

Brachycephalic dog breeds (bulldogs, pugs, French bulldogs, boxers, etc.) are some of the most susceptible breeds to heat stroke. Signs and symptoms of heat stroke are excessive panting, excessive drooling, collapse, seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy/unconsciousness.

The best way to care for your furry friends during this heatwave is to keep them indoors in the air conditioning. Ensure that they have fresh water at all times, and if you must exercise them, keep it short and during the coolest times of the day (sunrise and sunset).

In light of recent events involving a local ER, I thought it was good time for a post about planning for emergencies. When owning a pet, unfortunately emergencies are bound to happen. And when big emergencies happen, the treatment and care can become costly. When getting a pet, I always encourage people to keep this in mind and plan for emergencies. If you are lucky enough to be in a financial position to set aside money as an emergency account that is wonderful. If not, then I recommend looking into other options prior to an emergency occurring. If you have a young pet, insurance may be your best option. Like many insurances, pet insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions so it will not help if you try to get it once a problem has occurred. There are many good pet insurance options these days with various levels of co-pays and deductibles. Like most insurance in life, you hope never to have to use it but if you have an unexpected expense (like a pet emergency), it is there to help. If pet insurance is not for you, consider looking into payment options like Care Credit (www.carecredit.com). Care Credit is a credit card that is used for animal care and can be low interest or no interest depending the invoice total.

We all hope never to have a serious emergency with our pet but things happen and if you are prepared ahead of time it might alleviate some of the stress of the situation to know you have options.

As always, please feel free to ask us if you have any questions are Care Credit or pet insurance.
