As a follow up from yesterday, we wanted to share a reminder of the dangers of walking your dogs on hot asphalt.

If you cannot hold your bare hand on the asphalt for at least seven seconds, then it is too hot for your dogs bare paws!
Paw pads can burn easily, much like the image we've shared below. We recommend walking your dog at the coolest parts of the day (sunrise and sunset) and opting for walks or hikes in grasslands. Ensure they have fresh water available at all times and the ability to rest in the shade if you are out and about!

We think its important to share some information during this dangerous heat wave.

It is never okay to leave your pet in a hot car while you are doing errands. Please leave them home! It takes only minutes for your pet to develop heat stroke - heat stroke can have potentially fatal consequences. Leaving the windows cracked in your vehicle will do nothing to lower the temperature in your vehicle, neither will parking in the shade.

Brachycephalic dog breeds (bulldogs, pugs, French bulldogs, boxers, etc.) are some of the most susceptible breeds to heat stroke. Signs and symptoms of heat stroke are excessive panting, excessive drooling, collapse, seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy/unconsciousness.

The best way to care for your furry friends during this heatwave is to keep them indoors in the air conditioning. Ensure that they have fresh water at all times, and if you must exercise them, keep it short and during the coolest times of the day (sunrise and sunset).

In light of recent events involving a local ER, I thought it was good time for a post about planning for emergencies. When owning a pet, unfortunately emergencies are bound to happen. And when big emergencies happen, the treatment and care can become costly. When getting a pet, I always encourage people to keep this in mind and plan for emergencies. If you are lucky enough to be in a financial position to set aside money as an emergency account that is wonderful. If not, then I recommend looking into other options prior to an emergency occurring. If you have a young pet, insurance may be your best option. Like many insurances, pet insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions so it will not help if you try to get it once a problem has occurred. There are many good pet insurance options these days with various levels of co-pays and deductibles. Like most insurance in life, you hope never to have to use it but if you have an unexpected expense (like a pet emergency), it is there to help. If pet insurance is not for you, consider looking into payment options like Care Credit (www.carecredit.com). Care Credit is a credit card that is used for animal care and can be low interest or no interest depending the invoice total.

We all hope never to have a serious emergency with our pet but things happen and if you are prepared ahead of time it might alleviate some of the stress of the situation to know you have options.

As always, please feel free to ask us if you have any questions are Care Credit or pet insurance.

My love for working with and understanding canine behavior started in an animal clinic.

So you can imagine my excitement when Dr. Cermak reached out to me to ask if I’d like to talk with her team about reactivity and separation anxiety in dogs.

Bridging the gap between trainers and veterinary clinics is incredibly important, we’re both in the animal world with similar goals, to help animals live happy and healthy lives with their owners.

The team at North County Veterinary Hospital was incredibly welcoming and attentive to learning more about guiding their clients on ways to help their dogs struggling with behavioral issues.

Simba and I had a wonderful afternoon with them, a big thank you to the North County Veterinary Team for taking time out of their busy schedule to have us!!

Happy Vet Tech Appreciation week! We have the best techs around and I can’t thank them enough for all they do! Veterinary Technicians are simultaneously phlebotomists, anesthesiologists, laboratory technicians, animal whisperers, shoulders to cry on, teachers about animal behavior and fountains of information for our clients all at the same time. Most people don’t realize the skills or education it takes to be a veterinary technician. It is an under appreciated profession that draws in the most wonderful people because of their love of animals and their big hearts. Thanks to all vet techs out there doing their best work everyday! We wouldn’t function without them!!

Dear Valued Clients,

It is with some sadness that we write to inform you that Dr. Jones will be re-locating to North Carolina. She has been an integral part of our practice for the past 2 years, allowing us to grow the practice and expand your pet’s access to quality veterinary medicine. Dr. Jones will continue to see patients at North County Veterinary Hospital until Thursday August 11th.

As sad as we are to see Dr. Jones leave, we are equally as excited to welcome Dr. Laura Eiszler, (DVM, Michigan State, 2000) back to North County Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Eiszler has been practicing in the Berkshires since 2000 at Greylock Animal Hospital, Pittsfield Veterinary Hospital and at North County Veterinary Hospital from our opening in 2008 until 2015. Her veterinary interests include soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. Outside of work, Dr. Eiszler enjoys hiking, biking, kayaking and spending time with her husband. Dr. Eiszler will begin seeing patients on Monday, August 15th, allowing us to care for your pets without a disruption to our schedule.

Please join us in wishing Dr. Jones success and happiness as she makes this exciting transition, and in welcoming Dr. Eiszler back to the North County family.

With warmest regards,

Lindsay Cermak, DVM

A post about diets. If you are feeding grain free we have likely talked to you about some point about the related health concerns. Please consider feeding only diets that go through appropriate feeding trials and testing.

Dear Valued Clients,

As COVID case numbers continue to rise to unprecedented levels in our area we are continuing to take every precaution we can to keep our staff safe and remain open and fully operational. To that end, we regret to inform you that we are returning to curbside service only, effective immediately. We know this is disappointing to many of you and please understand it is disappointing to us as well but we are making this change to keep our clients and our staff as safe as possible in these challenging times.

Please continue to call us from the parking lot when you arrive for your appointment. One of our technicians will get your pet’s history and information over the phone and then will come out to bring your pet into the building for their appointment. The doctor will call you after the appointment to review the exam and recommendations. We will then place you on hold so our receptionist can take payment over the phone. Please remember to remain the parking lot for the duration of the appointment so we may return your pet to us as soon as we are finished.

As a reminder, we ask that you reschedule your appointment if you have travelled outside MA in the last 14 days, you currently have a fever or any COVID symptoms (cough, sore throat, etc.), you have been in contact with a COVID positive person, or you have a pending COVID test. When you are interacting with our staff in any way, we also kindly ask that you wear a mask at all times, even if you are in your vehicle.

Again, thank you for your continued patience and understanding during these trying times. We are looking forward to the day when we can return to our normal procedures and hope that 2022 will bring better days!

Best,
Lindsay Cermak, DVM

As many of you know, Dr. Reynolds opened North County Veterinary Hospital and ran it for many years before I took over ownership in 2016. He was a wonderful veterinarian and worked tirelessly to help pets in our community. We are so saddened by this sudden and tragic loss. The community truly lost an incredible person with his passing. All of us here will miss him dearly. I will be forever proud to have known him. He was more than just a colleague, he was my boss, mentor and friend. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and the Pittsfield Veterinary Hospital family as well.

Dear Clients,

As we move into the next phase of Massachusetts re-opening plan we are altering our current curbside protocol to allow clients back into the hospital. Beginning June 7th, we will allow ONE MASKED CLIENT into the hospital with their pet for their appointment. When you arrive at the hospital, please continue to call from the parking lot. When we are ready for you we will es**rt you and your pet into the building. If you prefer curbside service, that will continue to be an option. If you are coming to the hospital to pick up medications or food we ask that you call from the parking lot before entering the building so we can make sure we have your items ready for you to pick up.

It has been a long year of curbside appointments and we thank you for your patience and understanding as we all navigated new challenges. We are looking forward to seeing our clients again as we welcome you back into the building with your pets!

Sincerely,

Lindsay Cermak, DVM
