This #NationalDisasterPreparednessMonth, ease your mind by outlining a clear disaster plan for you and your furry friends.
Spencer, a 10 year old English Mastiff, was seen by Dr. Blake recently due to his owner noticing he was hesitant to sit down. Upon exam and diagnostics, she found he had partially torn his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in his left knee. In order to hopefully avoid surgery, she referred him to Fitter Critters in Lee, MA for aquatic therapy.
At Fitter Critters, they have tailored a massage/stretching and exercise routine for Spencer for his knee and also have him using their underwater treadmill (see the video below for his first time using it!). All of this is being done in hopes to strengthen back up the muscles in his left leg to prevent the ligament from tearing completely (which would then require surgery to fix it). Just in the 2 short weeks since the diagnosis to his evaluation, Spencer has lost 20-30% of the muscle mass in his left leg! Hopefully within the next 4-6 weeks of hard work on his (and his owner’s) part, Spencer can avoid surgery and regain that muscle mass and strength back. At 140lbs, that’s a lot of dog to carry on only 3 of his 4 legs! Good luck Spencer!
If you’d like to learn more about what Fitter Critters has to offer, ask your veterinarian or one of our staff members at your pet’s next appointment. Your pet does not need to be injured to see them as they also work with pets who need to lose weight or just overall health and wellness. Just like with humans, aquatics for your pet’s has great health benefits! http://www.fittercritters.org
