A domestic cat died of bird flu after eating raw turkey cat food contaminated with the virus.

There is NO reason to feed pets raw food, whether bought from a company or prepared at home. It offers ZERO benefit for your pets, and has WELL-DOCUMENTED risks.

That’s why all credible veterinary expert agencies discourage it, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, and others.

Raw meat - whether poultry, beef, game, or otherwise - is high risk for contamination of a variety of disease-causing microorganisms. There are data demonstrating it to be much higher risk than any cooked pet foods.

Influencers that promote raw animal diets use the same medical conspiracism to demonize pet food manufacturers - obviously ignoring that raw food companies ARE pet food manufacturers too - they just don’t have quality control or food safety standards in the same way.

Deliberately exposing your pets to diseases should be considered animal abuse. That’s true for not vaccinating them, and feeding them raw food.

And bird flu is only the most recent risk of this fad diet that ONLY puts your pets in harms’ way.

Update: adopter found --- ADOPTER needed for Chavo. He's a mixed breed neutered male, about a year old. If we can secure a home for him, he'd arrive from California on Dec 28th.

"I fostered Chavo for a couple days after he walked up to my home. A neighbor a couple streets over contacted me and said that her and a couple other neighbors had been feeding him since another neighbor kicked him out of their home. He was very skittish and no one was able to secure him. When she realized that I had him, she came and picked him up from me and he's progressed so much! He is wonderful with other dogs, cats, and even babies. He's house-trained, and was neutered last week. I'm trying to find him a foster-based rescue so he doesn't regress."

Update: Adopter found! Yay! -- ADOPTER needed for Dorothy. If adopter is secured, she will arrive from California on December 28th. She's a 12 year old Chihuahua, 13 pounds. She had a dental in October.

Oh Dorothy! She has a big personality for such a small dog. She was fostered by one of our ACOs for a couple weeks and now she's with a foster than mainly does seniors. She's good with large and small dogs, and even cats. She is going deaf, but does hear loud noises. They thought she couldn't see well either, but her foster said that's not the case. She LOVES food. She's a young dog in an old lady body and she's got that fight in her. She loves to be held too. I have a ton of video and pictures of her if you need more. :) Her foster has been doing "physical therapy" with her so her get legs moving a bit more. It's super cute. lol

Her adoption fee is reduced to $100.

About Us

FOCCAS has been in operation since July 2005 and in that time we have found homes for more than 1,503 dogs and 2,298 cats. Total adoptions 3,801. In addition, we have helped fund the spay/neuter of over 1200 dogs and 3600 cats in the local community. (as of 12/31/2018)

We work completely by volunteers which allows us to put more money towards helping the animals. All pets are in experienced foster homes and we have an adoption event every Saturday at Pony Village Mall from 10-4pm.

Dog adoptions start at $150, (higher in certain circumstances/puppies) and $75 for cats/kittens. This fee includes vaccinations, worming, flea control, spay/neuter, microchip, and possibly other medical services if required. All dogs will receive a Coos County dog license.

If you have any questions about our services, or if you have an animal that you need to re-home, please email us at [email protected] with questions or information on your pet. And/Or.. If you need help with spaying/neutering your pet, please leave us a message at 541-269-1989 with information about breed, age, weight, name, your address and phone number. If we have any questions we can call you back. The voice mail will be returned by a volunteer. The phone number will be blocked because it is her private number. Please have your phone available to accept blocked calls and have your voice mail set up incase the volunteer needs to leave a message.
