This was written by a dear friend of mine and it explains to a T, how preservation breeders feel about what is being done to this precious breed.

“Do preservation breeders that breed to the standard really “hate” DQ colors?”

The issue with DQ Breeders, that we have been experiencing for decades now, within our breed has been argued ad nauseam.
Common sense as to why for those of us that have been around for a while. However, for those that don’t understand or those who want to change history, I have written this article.

There is a new argument being presented that our issue is with certain colors we simply don’t like. Colors that we don’t care to see, and voted against, therefore we don’t like the dog. Even that we are envious of the high price tag called for by the “current” fad during its craze phase.
This of course is ridiculous.

Firstly, French bulldogs are innocent of their very existence, let alone their color.
The reason for our frustration runs much deeper and is only with the human element and on behalf of the innocent animals.
Truth be told had a subset of breeders now referred to as DQ or non-standard breeders, not originally set out to breed against the breed’s standard for these disqualifying colors, the current state of our breed would be extremely different.

A reality with no DQ breeders…

The reality of the breed would be that standard breeders would breed in more widespread pedigrees to include lines that also occasionally produce disqualifying colors. The response when they would be produced, would simply be to either eliminate the DQ colored dog from the breeding program by placing it in a companion home, or perhaps even not show the dog, but possibly breed it to get a standard colored dog to move forward with. The occasional dog of disqualifying color that would be produced would actually be of high quality, type and health. It would not be marketed as rare or exotic. It would just be an unfortunate color in a show breeding program because it could not be shown. The DQ colors also carry negative attributes like self pigmentation and light eyes (as in the diluted blue and liver) so it stands to reason too much concentration of these dogs showing up would negatively affect type and appearance. In the case of black this color is dominant and allowance of it would saturate the gene pools and be hard to breed away from. So you see, voting against these colors to begin with had sound reasoning.

Why are we all so upset?
Preservation breeder’s kneejerk reaction of anger and frustration has nothing to do with the color itself or the poor innocent animal. It has to do with it being purposefully bred for, and the standard or guidelines for our breed being disregarded. Because DQ breeders have had such a negative effect on our breed as a whole, highly dedicated preservation breeders breed very seldomly in these lines if ever at all. They actually go out of their way to avoid them. Therefore, when you see a dog of a disqualifying color, it is most likely that it was bred for on purpose.

What did that mean for our breed?
If we go back 20 to 30 years, and all you had were breeders that bred for blue, liver and black and tan, it would just be disclosed that those are DQ breeders, and they are breeding against the standard and those are the list of colors they produce. Bred for possibly as a preference or to provide to a niche pet market.
However, the reality is tremendously worse.

A broken mentality…
These breeders had a different mentality of what they were trying to achieve. Breeding against the standard gave birth to a whole new disturbing trend. With relying on the specifics of being able to market a dog as rare or exotic, meant that they had to change up what was considered rare every time the market became saturated.
This evolved from first blue to then liver to then black and tan etc. etc. competing for the monopoly on the “latest” DNA combo.
Once the naturally occurring colors were marketed out of their respective novelty, they then began mixing in new colors and coat textures by adding different breeds. Thus the birth of merle, fluffy, velvet, horse hair, hairless etc. etc. None of which are French Bulldog of course, but you will always find someone to lie and say that these attributes are naturally occurring in the breed, and that their dog is purebred, and that everyone that disagrees is just upset, and they have a DNA panel to prove their dog is pure bred. They don’t attempt to establish a new name or put in the hard work to cultivate a new breed. They want to ride on the popularity of the beloved French Bulldog while breeding outside of its standard. The standard, by the way, is the VERY reason it’s called a FRENCH BULLDOG. These lies and manipulation of facts on top of the poor broken monstrosities that fill rescues are exactly why preservation breeders have the reaction that they have. It no longer has anything to do with the color it has to do with the bastardization of a beloved breed by people whose pursuit of rare and exotic DNA has been nothing more than a series of lab experiments.
Even individuals that pride themselves in breeding only DQ colors that are naturally occurring in the breed and health test and claim to breed for type, etc. only brand themselves as the “best” in a bad group.
Clearly anyone breeding animals of any kind should always health test and try to improve on the previous generation in type and quality in pursuit of perfection. This is a given.
However, even when you health test, if you are still breeding outside of a breed’s standard, you ignore the blueprint and therefore your goal is to alter the appearance, and this is contrary to what preservation breeders are trying to do. In addition we’ve seen papers hung and lies told and pedigrees muddied in order to seek the validation of registries and shows that you’ve literally set out to break the rules of from the very start! To “prove” your dog’s worth. A group that are disappointed when they are not embraced.
The facts have been manipulated and the real story has been attempted to be rewritten with preservation breeders as the villain. At the end of the day we are faced with one reality…. Is every DQ breeder (breeding contrary to the breed standard) producing the broken and extreme types we see in rescue? Perhaps not…but 100 percent of the broken, extreme and poor quality animals being sold in tact based solely on the “rare” DNA it carries DO come from that group. So when you don’t feel welcomed or received with open arms, this is 30 years of arguing our case against this practice. If you love the breed as you say then work with us to preserve it. Stop trying to alter it, even if ever so slightly, and calling it French Bulldog. If you don’t care to do that and you prefer to breed an alternative looking dog, that is your choice, ofcourse. Go put in the hard work to establish the new breed give it a new standard and a new name. Put in the work that is done by the founding members of any breed. Stop purposely working against a breed and then seeking validation from its breeding stock exhibitions.
If you really do desire to show and breed in AKC and adopt the principles of the parent club, you have to start over. You can’t breed up your current foundation, you have to spay and neuter everything DQ and establish a fresh start. You also can’t breed separate lines of DQ and standard dogs simultaneously while promising to keep them separate. It takes YEARS to earn the respect of your peers as new comers to any breed, and for people who start out or dabble in the DQ world it takes twice as long. Be patient and humble and work hard. People will eventually see your heart through your consistency and obvious exedous from that world. You can’t betray a foundational belief system of a group then pursue their immediate empathy. Plus you may not realize this, but you carry the reputation of the entire group not just your possibly small contribution to it.

This is our issue. Not about color at all and not about the innocent dog. But about the group and their disregard for the preservation and protection of the established breed that we all love so dearly.
