Handsome Brew 🖤 just started his private lessons last week & he’s already rocking it! 🤩

His first session we focused on manners, learning to settle on-leash, and his foundation obedience exercises. This week we were able to add in some heeling exercises and impulse control, like waiting permission to exit external doors 🌟

Brew’s mom Emma is doing a fantastic job with their homework, and it really shows! 🥳

Our agency would like to express our gratitude to Brady's K Fund for generously donating a ballistic vest to NCPD K-9 Oskar. Pfc. Christopher Schuessler, Oskar's handler, is thankful for the added layer of protection that the vest will provide for his partner. Brady's K9 Fund is dedicated to donating vests to police and military working dogs, and we are grateful for their support and commitment to safeguarding our department and others.

Welcome, Peanut! 🩷

Peanut is a 1 year old Peekapoo that arrived this week for her 3 week Companion Canine Board & Train program. She is just the sweetest pup but has some habits at home that aren’t so cute (jumping, nipping at toes, excessive barking). She also doesn’t know her obedience commands… yet! This girl is SMART & quickly figuring out her foundation exercises already🤓

I love teaching little dogs. They’re so capable & generally truly enjoy having the same clarity & direction we bestow upon our larger pups out of necessity. Peanut is already proving to be a lot of fun to work with, and has quite the spunky character 🌟just take a look at the progression from her welcome photo shoot - that last photo is definitely the end of her patience at my attempts to get the perfect shot 📸😂

Welcome, Stanley! 👋🏼

Stanley is a 4-5 year old rescue pup that arrived today for his 3 week Companion Canine Board & Train program 🩶 over the next few weeks we’ll be working on his on & off-leash obedience commands and manners, and his neutrality towards other dogs when he’s out in public. Stanley is a super sweet boy & is already proving to be a motivated learner! 🤓

This week’s newest Private Lesson students:

💜 Holly Belle 💜 We are working on puppy training - manners, house & crate training, play biting, and introducing our basic obedience commands

💛 Hobbes 💛 We are addressing his leash manners & recall foundation. He will be joining his brother Hank for a Custom Board & Train in May!

🧡 Rooster 🧡 We are also working on puppy training, including biting, jumping & basic obedience commands!

Most dogs end their lessons like Holly Belle & Rooster - super relaxed, if not completely asleep! We tackle a few different hands-on exercises with each dog, and in between, start working on the concept of relaxing on leash next to their person 👍🏼

🎄 The 12 Dog Days of Christmas, Day 4! 🎄

For our 4th gift option, we’re highlighting Treat Pouches! These are two fantastic options because:

✨ They have a metal closure that prevents you from spilling your food everywhere

✨ Large space for holding plenty of rewards that’s also easy to get your hand in & out of

Having a good treat pouch available for your dog’s training is a huge asset 💰They allow you to be hands-free while keeping your rewards on you, even if you don’t have extra pocket space, and they’re convenient for keeping things like car keys & p**p bags handy when out on training field trips 🚗

The pouches here are the large PetSafe Treat Pouch (available online & in many local pet stores) & the Voilà Ultimate Treat Pouch (available online). You’re certainly not limited to these two options, though. There are so many treat pouches on the market, you can absolutely find one that fits your preferences. What’s important is that you’re investing in something that makes training your dog EASIER, not more complicated 💫

🎄The 12 Dog Days of Christmas, Day 3!🎄

Ok, surely we’re not the only ones that overestimate what we can accomplish during the holidays… 😉 We may be a little behind schedule but we WILL get you all 12 things that are beneficial gifts for both you & your pup, promise! ♥️

So without further ado, Day 3 is highlighting The Starmark Bob-A-Lot treat/ food dispensing toy! This is one of our favorite food dispensing toys because:

✨ It’s reasonably priced (about $20)
✨ Easily accessible (they’re available on Chewy.com, Amazon.com & in-person at many local pet stores)
✨ Super durable (we’ve had ours for years & it’s one of Yedi’s favorites)
✨ And, of course, it requires your dog to use his brain 🤓

You’ll definitely want to supervise while your pup figures out how the toy works initially. If they decide to go the destructive route of chewing the top off, the Bob-a-lot isn’t going to last very long! But you can make the opening larger in the beginning to help build your dog’s confidence in how to finagle their snacks out of the toy, and then increase the difficulty by shrinking that opening a bit.

If you haven’t noticed the trend yet, having a variety of options to meet our dog’s mental stimulation needs is a big priority here! Because a tired dog is a happy dog, and working for at least some of their daily food intake is a great way to give your dog an appropriate job to do 👍🏼

Or using a Qwizl to hold a bully stick so it takes longer to chew (and prevents that last chunk from being swallowed whole!) There are so many fun options from West Paw, you’re bound to find something your pup will enjoy; and you can feel good about your purchase knowing it’s going to last, and provide a little extra mental stimulation (something most of our dogs would benefit from) ♥️

One of our regular overnight camp guests, Whiskey River 🩷 celebrated her first birthday while with us! So of course we had to celebrate & break out the birthday hat 🥳 I’d say her enthusiasm for the paparazzi had waned by the last photo 😂

Newly adopted Malibu is getting one-on-one training via Private Lessons to help get a head start on some foundation skills before coming for her Custom Board & Train soon! Malibu is an adult Great Pyrenees struggling with separation anxiety & some resource guarding in her new home. We’re getting her and her owner the help they need so that both ends of the leash can thrive moving forward! 🩷

Instagram 😇 versus Reality 😂

Olive 💕 was just so excited for her photo op after her first Private Lesson, she could barely contain herself 😉 But she is helping make a great point ➡️ it’s easy to take a single snapshot of something & make it look good, amazing even. And that can lead to wishing our dog was “perfect like theirs” or smarter or as well-behaved… When truthfully, there’s a ton of work that went on behind the scenes to make things look so impressive and the only way to get those results yourself is to ✨ train ✨ for them. Put in the work & the time, and you will see positive changes in your dog, and in your relationship with them 💪🏼 We’re here to help when you could use some guidance in reaching those goals! Your dog CAN be better behaved, promise 😉

Miss Valkyrie had a super fun stay with us this past week! 🩷 She’s one of Essie’s favorite playmates and I got plenty of entertainment watching them roll around with each other 😂 Val’s play style is a bit unique but her confidence around other dogs is SO much better than it used to be 🌟

Did you know that if your pup has trained with us in the past, they’re eligible for fun stays while you’re on your own vacation?! We only keep a few dogs at a time, both for Board & Train programs and In-Home Boarding, so everyone gets the one-on-one attention they need in an environment that’s comfortable & familiar 🏡 email or text with the dates you need and we’ll get it on the books! 📆

Meet Josie 🩵

Josie is enrolled in Private Lessons to address her reactivity towards bicycles and other fast moving things (like runners! 🏃🏼‍♀️)

We’re addressing her foundation training first, working on better handler engagement, consistent obedience and clear communication 🤓 And then we’ll be able to teach her how to behave when a skateboarder passes her, or there’s a bicyclist on the beach while she’s playing

✨ Dog training isn’t about quick fixes and bandaids for problem behaviors. It takes time and effort to change old habits, but it’s worth it, for both ends of the leash! ✨

Meet Whiskey River, one of our current Private Lesson students 🩷 Whiskey is a 5 month old Moyen Poodle that is so much fun to work with! She is just the sweetest pup, and LOVES her mom. We’re putting some extra focus on her crate training & creating independence to get ahead of some separation issues she has. Whiskey is already becoming more comfortable in her crate, and less stressed when mom is out of sight 👏🏼

All of our lessons are customized to the individual dog so we will address whatever is top priority for each family ✨
