Fresh Future Farm is a .8 acre urban oasis bursting with seasonal veggies, fruit, and herbs. Founded to bring affordable high-quality food access and jobs to a disinvested community, the farm aims to grow the quality of life that its neighbors deserve through quality job training, educational opportunities, garden kits, and an onsite USDA store that sells hyperlocal produce and specialty groceries at prices customers can afford.

Have you heard of the W. Gresham Meggett School? It was established in 1953 as an equalization school to give Black students with 'separate but equal' education. It was the first high school for Black students on James Island.

“Nobody’s free until everybody’s free”
-- Fannie Lou Hamer

"My work is that of keeping every operation down (in size) so that the farmer and the man farthest down can get hold of it."
-- George Washington Carver

"The time I still have on this earth will be devoted to helping small farmers develop efficient and profitable operations."
-- Booker T. Whatley

These three food justice pioneers believed in a just future where everyone had what they needed. We can learn from them as we combat tactics by a wealthy few to hoard collective resources. On February 6, we're hosting a virtual class on these and other Black food justice pioneers. Sign up at https://buff.ly/4alvx8g

More than simply acknowledging that the current system is unjust, food justice asks:

🥦 Who has access to healthy, nutritious, culturally appropriate food?

🥦 Who owns and controls the land, credit, knowledge, technology, and other resources?

🥦 Who is doing the labor of food production?

🥦 What kind of food traditions are valued?

🥦 How has colonialism affected the food system’s development?

Our Black Food Justice Pioneers class will feature inspiring leaders who asked these very questions and weren't satisfied with the answers. They worked to make the food system benefit everyone! Sign up for the class on February 6 to learn more: https://buff.ly/4alvx8g

Today is the 7th and final day of Kwanzaa. We light the far right green candle to represent Imani, which means faith. Imani is about believing with all our hearts in Black people and the righteousness and victory of our struggle for liberation.

The first day of the New Year is a time for reflection. The Official Kwanzaa website suggests that we reflect on the following questions:

Who am I?

Am I really who I say I am?

Am I all I ought to be?

How do you celebrate Imani? What are you reflecting on today?
