The Fourth of July is approaching, here are some tips to help prepare your pets in advance:

Make sure your pets have identification tags with up-to-date contact information and their microchip information is also up to date.
If your pets aren’t already microchipped, talk with your veterinarian about microchipping.
This simple procedure can greatly improve your chances of getting your pets back if they become lost.
Take a current photo of all of your cats and dogs just in case.
If your pet has historically been anxious on this holiday consider behavioral therapy to desensitize your pet and reduce the risk of problems.
Some pets may need medication. Consult your veterinarian or a veterinary behaviorist.
Make sure the environment is safe and secure. If your neighbors set off fireworks at an unexpected time, is your yard secure enough to keep your pet contained? Evaluate your options, and choose the safest area for your animals. Make improvements if needed to make the area more secure.

Safety during July 4 celebrations:
Leave your pets at home when you go to parties, fireworks displays, parades and other gatherings.
Loud fireworks, unfamiliar places and crowds can all be very frightening to pets, and there's great risk of pets becoming spooked and running away.
Consider putting your pets in a safe, escape-proof room or crate during parties and fireworks.
If you're hosting guests, ask them to help keep an eye on your pets to make sure they don’t escape. Placing notes on exit doors and gates can help both you and your guests remain vigilant.
Keep your pets inside if you or your neighbors are setting off fireworks.
Keep sparklers, glow sticks, fireworks, charcoal and kabob skewers away from curious pets.
Don't let pets get near your barbecue grill while it is in use or still hot.
Avoid the urge to feed your pets table scraps or other foods intended for people.
Be especially careful to keep them away from common foods that are actually toxic.

Remember that too much sun and heat (and humidity!) can be dangerous to pets. Keep them inside when it's extremely hot/humid, and make sure they have access to shady spots and plenty of water when outdoors. Don't leave pets outside for extended periods in hot weather. And know the signs that a pet may be overheating.
If you're travelling out of town for the holiday, consider leaving your pets at home with a pet sitter or boarding them in a kennel. If you need to bring them with you, be sure you know how to keep them safe.

After the celebrations:
Check your yard for fireworks debris before allowing pets outside to play or relax. Even if you didn't set off fireworks yourself, debris can make its way into your yard, where curious animals may pick it up to play with or eat.
If you hosted guests, check both your yard and home for food scraps or other debris that might be dangerous to pets, such as food skewers.

July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month

Every year, countless pets go missing, leaving their owners distraught and anxious. Losing a pet is a heart-wrenching experience that no pet parent should have to endure.
That's why National Lost Pet Prevention Month, observed every July, serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of pet identification, responsible ownership, and proactive measures to keep our furry friends safe.

Microchipping:
Microchipping is a safe and simple procedure that involves implanting a tiny electronic chip beneath a pet's skin. This chip contains a unique identification number linked to the owner's contact information. In case a pet goes missing and is found, veterinary clinics, shelters, and animal control agencies can scan the microchip to reunite the pet with its owner.

Visible Identification: Collars and Tags
While microchipping is essential, it's equally important for pets to wear visible identification. A sturdy collar with an engraved tag displaying the owner's name and phone number can significantly increase the chances of a lost pet being returned. We encourage pet parents to regularly check their pet's collar and tags for signs of wear and tear, ensuring they remain legible and securely attached.

Responsible Pet Ownership
Preventing pet loss begins with responsible pet ownership. This includes maintaining a secure and pet-friendly environment at home, such as a well-fenced yard and securely latched gates. Additionally, it's vital to keep pets on leashes or in appropriate enclosures when outdoors. Spaying or neutering pets also helps reduce their desire to roam, minimizing the risk of getting lost.

Utilizing Technology: Pet-Finding Apps and Social Media
The advent of technology has revolutionized the way we approach lost pet prevention. Pet-finding apps and websites, along with social media platforms, have become invaluable tools in reuniting lost pets with their owners. By utilizing these platforms, pet parents can post information about their missing pets, share photos, and reach a wider audience, exponentially increasing the chances of a successful reunion.

June is National Pet Disaster Preparedness Month.

It's time to start prepping and making sure to have your emergency kits ready, evacuation and shelter plans in place, and most importantly make sure your pet's identification is up to date!

Go to this link for help with making your plans.
www.ready.gov/pets

Here are some items you may want to include in an emergency kit for your pet:

illustration of a dog and an emergency supply kit for pets, which includes food, toys, medicine, food and a collar with a tag.

Food. Keep several days’ supply of food in an airtight, waterproof container.
Water. Store a water bowl and several days’ supply of water.

Medicine. Keep an extra supply of the medicine your pet takes on a regular basis in a waterproof container.

First aid kit. Talk to your veterinarian about what is most appropriate for your pet’s emergency medical needs.

Collar with ID tag and a harness or leash. Include a backup leash, collar and ID tag. Have copies of your pet’s registration information and other relevant documents in a waterproof container and available electronically.

Traveling bag, crate or sturdy carrier, ideally one for each pet.

Grooming items. Pet shampoo, conditioner and other items, in case your pet needs some cleaning up.

Sanitation needs. Include pet litter and litter box (if appropriate), newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags and household chlorine bleach to provide for your pet’s sanitation needs.

A picture of you and your pet together. If you become separated from your pet during an emergency, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you in identifying your pet.

Familiar items. Put favorite toys, treats or bedding in your kit. Familiar items can help reduce stress for your pet.

It's May and you know what that means!

It's national pet month, chip your pet month and lyme disease prevention month!

Don't forget to shower your pets with some extra love this month!

Here are 4 steps to preventing lyme disease in your pets:
1. Check your pets frequently for ticks after going outside.
2. Use a veterinarian recommended tick prevention product.
3. Avoid tick heavy areas like the woods and tall grass whenever possible.
4. Consult your vet to see if the lyme vaccine is a good fit for your pet.

Lyme disease is spread by blacklegged ticks (deer ticks) who are becoming more common in our area by the year.

New Year’s Eve is almost here and you know what that means, right?

Loud celebrations everywhere!

As Veterinary professionals we hear many complaints of pets being scared, anxious and sometimes even afraid during New Year’s celebrations! It makes sense if you think about it. Our neighbors are celebrating in their nearby homes and oftentimes those celebrations include noise factors like blow horns, fireworks, and continuous doorbell rings announcing that guests have arrived. New Year’s is a really fun holiday and is great fun for most people, but that is not always the case for our pets so it’s important that as pet parents we consider these few things during the holidays:

How to keep your pet calm and happy:

-Try to exercise your pet earlier in the day when there are less people in your neighborhood.

-Keep your pet inside your home in a safe, comfortable, and familiar spot during the fireworks.

-Provide a safe place inside for your pet to retreat if they are overwhelmed when you invite them outside. If your pet is happy in a crate and enjoys this as their safe spot, that can be a great option.
If utilizing a crate, you can cover it to remove and visual stimulation that could also upset your pet.

-Always make sure your pets are wearing their ID tag on a properly fitting collar or harness, in case they manage to get out. If you haven’t already, be sure to get your pet microchipped, as it could help tremendously if your pet gets lost.

-Give your pet something fun to engage with – like a frozen treat, stuffed KONG toy, puzzle, or their favorite toy!

-Sound Therapy is another option that can be explored but it is important to note that it is most effective when you start playing music before the fireworks start. This will be best used at a time when your pet is feeling peaceful, comfortable, and relaxed. Continue to play the music as the festivities begin and your pet will begin to associate the music with that same feeling as before, making them feel more calm and content.

-If your pet likes to be held, and finds it comforting, they may find themselves wanting to be in your arms during the loud celebrations. Be sure you’re able to do so safely and comfortably. We wouldn’t recommend holding a pet who doesn’t typically enjoy being held.

Have you tried all these methods and nothing seems to be working for your pet?
There is always the option of talking to your vet about possible medications that would help ease your pets discomfort.
