Charleston Animal Society

Charleston Animal Society Since 1874, our mission has been THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
YOUR Charleston Animal Society is celebrating 150 years of protecting animals.

From hamsters to horses, the Animal Society provides compassionate care to over 20,000 animals each year. In addition to caring for homeless animals, from hamsters to horses, adopting them into new homes, and reuniting the lost with their families, the organization responds to animals in crisis as a result of both man-made and natural disasters. The comprehensive shelter medicine program not only

provides direct services for as many as 1,200 animals in our system of care at one time, the shelter veterinarians also spay or neuter upwards of 10,000 dogs and cats each year and they provide emergency medical services to critically ill and injured animals arriving at the shelter daily. We will let our friends over at the American Heartworm Society answer this question!

“Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets in the United States and many other parts of the world. It is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. Heartworm disease affects dogs, cats and ferrets, but heartworms also live in other mammal species, including wolves, coyotes, foxes, sea lions and—in rare instances—humans. Because wild species such as foxes and coyotes live in proximity to many urban areas, they are considered important carriers of the disease.”
-American Heartworm Society

The good news is, that there are a variety of prescription based products that are available to prevent your pet from getting heartworms. So be sure to talk to your primary veterinary today!

Right now at Charleston Animal Society for the month of April every dog & cat adoption will go home with 1 single dose of heartworm, flea, and tick prevention while supplies last!

ALL DOGS ARE FREE TO ADOPT THROUGH SUNDAY!
Meet Abbot, a 2-year-old Lab mix with a sweet and loyal heart, looking for an experienced owner who can help him build confidence and provide the guidance he needs. Abbot is a bit fearful and can be cautious around new people and places, so he would do best in a home with no kids, where his adopter is patient and committed to helping him feel safe and secure. He thrives on positive experiences and a steady, calm approach to new situations.

Abbot also has some separation anxiety, so he will need an adopter who is home most of the time, or at least has the flexibility to be with him often. He would greatly benefit from crate training, which can help him feel safe when left alone and manage his anxiety. As an active dog, Abbot needs an active family who can provide the physical and mental stimulation he craves, while also being understanding of his need for a slow, supportive introduction to new environments.

If you're an experienced dog owner who is ready to invest time in Abbot's training and give him the love and patience he needs, you'll be rewarded with a loyal, loving companion who will thrive in a safe, consistent environment.

All dogs are FREE to adopt through this weekend.
Luna, an adult German Shepherd mix with a high-energy personality and a strong desire to learn! Luna is looking for an experienced, active family that understands the unique needs of her breed. She thrives in an environment where she can get plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and one-on-one attention. Due to her strong instincts, Luna would do best in a home without kids, cats, or small animals, as she doesn't get along well with them and prefers to be the only pet. She is not the biggest fan of other dogs either, so she's looking for a family where she can be the center of attention.

Luna is eager to learn and will benefit from an experienced owner who can provide her with the training and structure she needs to become a well-behaved and loyal companion. If you're looking for a devoted, intelligent dog who thrives on activity and training, Luna is ready to join your home and become your lifelong partner in adventure!
Visit us today! Charleston Animal Society is located at 2455 Remount Road in North Charleston. Adoption hours are 10 AM to 5 PM on weekends and 12 PM to 3 PM on weekdays. Browse available pets online at CharlestonAnimalSociety.org/Adopt.

Time is running out to enter Charleston Animal Society's 8th Annual Lifesaving Car Raffle. Thanks to the incredible generosity of Hank and Laurel Greer, this year’s grand prize is a brand-new 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy—a stunning luxury hybrid SUV packed with cutting-edge technology, premium comfort, and jaw-dropping style.

That’s not all! Three lucky winners will also walk away with cash prizes of $12,000, $8,000, and $4,000!

"Tickets are going fast, so if someone wants a chance at these great prizes, they need to act now," said Charleston Animal Society Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Aldwin Roman, CAWA. "The beauty of the car raffle is that every ticket sold helps us save more lives. Also, the more tickets you buy, the more you save." You can get your tickets now at CharlestonAnimalSociety.org/raffle.

For nearly a decade, the generosity of Hank and Laurel Greer has helped Charleston Animal Society raise over $1.7 million through these raffles. These funds have been a lifeline for animals in need, providing critical medical care, shelter, and adoption services to thousands of animals. 100% of proceeds directly supported our mission to end cruelty to animals.

"If you stacked all of the dogs and cats the Lifesaving Raffle has helped, it would be taller than Mt. Everest," said Roman. "It's incredible when you realize that since it started, the Lifesaving Raffle has helped support the care of over 100,000 animals."

Don’t wait—secure your chance now to win this incredible vehicle or one of the cash prizes while making a real difference in the lives of animals.

Meet Cupid!
Cupid's story is one of resilience and love. When his owner faced eviction, Cupid found himself at the Charleston Animal Society. Despite these changes, Cupid has proven to be an amazing housemate-he's potty-trained and knows how to behave indoors like a perfect gentleman.

Cupid shines brightest around other dogs his size and loves nothing more than showering his humans with gentle bear hugs and wet kisses. While he's not a fan of cats (he thinks they're fun to chase), his heart is full of love for people and dogs alike. Cupid is looking for a calm, stable home where he can feel safe. He's a homebody, preferring the quiet comforts of house life over the hustle and bustle of the outside world. He is learning to enjoy quiet walks in the neighborhood.

Currently, Cupid is being cared for in a foster home. If you'd like to meet Cupid and learn more about this lovable pup, you can reach out to the Charleston Animal Society's behavior team at [email protected]. Adoption hours are Weekdays: 12pm-3pm and Weekends: 10am-5pm.

"Cher Holder" who came to us as a stray, was matted over 2/3rds of her body and in pain! The fur was so bad around her feet it was curling around her claws and we had to completely shave them to cut her nails. While she was sedated for her spay surgery, our team shaved her as much as they could, getting the worst of the mats off, before she woke up and then they had to stop, leaving her with a very weird lion cut hairdo.

She went to a couple adoption events this past weekend looking like that and then Madi at Doggie Disco just one mile down the road from our shelter (https://www.facebook.com/p/The-Doggie-Disco-LLC-100088752245894/) worked her in and cleaned her all up and cut her to one length. Now she can grow it out again with regular grooms. It truly takes a village to save the lives that end up in our shelter! Thanks Madi for helping to make sweet Cher look and feel better!
Please come and meet her!
