This article is a MUST READ!! Our board will stay in close contact with the AVMA and NAVTA and keep you up to date on changes. The AVMA is creating a Committee on Advancing Veterinary Technicians and Technologists to actively work on many of the issues mentioned in the survey, including title protection, retention within the veterinary technology field, and financial security for veterinary technicians.

Kelly Foltz, a credentialed veterinary technician, is chair of the AVMA Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities, which accredits more than 200 veterinary technology programs in the U.S. She said the survey is an essential read.

“It’s one of the only consistently repeated analyses that we have of the vet technology profession,” she said. “It gives us a snapshot in time as to the health of the profession and what we need to be concerned about—and how systems are functioning.”

In terms of wages, Foltz argued that current salaries are still not adequate for the knowledge and expertise that credentialed veterinary technicians provide.

Survey results from the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America reveal the latest data about the profession of veterinary technology, including salary ranges, job satisfaction, and current challenges.

Facts about Title Protection - The veterinary technician profession has long been challenged by a lack of cohesion and standards in the United States. As a result, the title of “Veterinary Technician” is used inconsistently and, often times, incorrectly, and suffers from a lack of clarity and understanding, both within the veterinary world and among consumers. To understand the current environment of the varying licensing requirements and standards throughout the United States, theNAVTA Veterinary Nurse Initiative Task Force reviewed the current veterinary practice act language for each state on title protection for veterinary technicians. Connecticut does not include any title protection in it's practice act. Visit NAVTA's website to learn more about our profession and current initiatives.

You are not JUST a Veterinary Technician you are an integral part of a Veterinary Healthcare Team!! Own it!!

The wider vet profession has a bad habit. Born of modesty and self-effacement, a rejection of elitism or an eagerness to be approachable, or revealing an underlying skew and undervaluing of our expertise, skills and experience - it's the use of the word 'JUST'.

From the outset, we are never 'just' a vet student, or 'just' a student nurse; we're highly motivated individuals who've gained a place to start training for a positive, purposeful, challenging and important career.

We're never 'just' a new grad or newly qualified nurse - we've studied and examined our way through years to now be proven as a true, registered professional.

We're never 'just' doing surgery, consulting, visits, routine work, neuters, preventative healthcare - we're bringing our skills to bear on vitally important treatment for our patients.
We're not 'just' a GP - never 'just' a GP - we're the master of a spread of conditions and species that would make doctors and dentists gasp at the sheer volume. Nor do we 'just' work referral, or limited work roles - we've piled our knowledge higher in a narrower field, to offer the best results we can.
We don't 'just' do consult-only roles; we face our client's worries and concerns, and bring them solace and reassurance through our advice.
We don't 'just' work in kennels, on reception, in organisation or in management - we use our knowledge and expertise to deliver unglamorous tasks that also help our colleagues achieve.
We don't 'just' have a look - we examine. We don't 'just' do a quick snip - we operate. We don't 'just' call-in - we perform case reviews. We don't 'just' nip and find out -we research cases, building on our skill set and knowledge base.
We are many, many things - but none of them, not a single one, is ever 'just' anything.
