Today I am so proud of Ziggy! Ziggy was pulled from the Turlock Animal Shelter a couple of years ago. He was languishing and in danger of being PTS. We rescued him and he was adopted but it didn't work out. He was returned a couple of weeks later for possibly killing a cat. He and my son Joey became friends and eventually, Joey adopted him.

My friend Crystal and I have been teaching group training classes together. As we prepared, she noticed Ziggy and thought he could be a good demo dog for our classes. Ziggy is a fast learner and really wants to please people.

I have a client with a fearful German Shepherd that likes to express himself with his teeth. Because I can't handle his dog yet and the dog decided he wasn't going to work in the heat, we kenneled him up and I got Ziggy out. I wanted my client to know what he could expect from his dog and to develop leadership & training skills to practice with his dog at home.

Today, we worked on two emergency techniques, the perfect sit, hold/wait, release, loose leash walking & the first 3 items on the AKC Canine Good Citizen list. Because Ziggy knew what he was doing, we were able to cover all of these items quickly despite the heat. It gave my client the ability to know what to expect from his dog, to know what to practice this week and develop some muscle memory to continue building his leadership skills. I followed up by sending links to our YouTube training page.

Training is such a positive investment in the welfare of a dog and the entire family. I'm really proud of my client and Ziggy and can't wait to see the progress that is made with my client's dog as he grows in his handling skills!!

It's so heartbreaking to see all of the lost & found posts today. Thankfully, some made it home but many did not. I'm posting this now so you can be prepared for next year.

Dogs that normally don't jump fences or stay close to home may be motivated to jump a fence when frightened enough. Once they're gone, it's very challenging to find them when they're in fight or flight mode.

Please keep your dogs inside and/or in a kennel on the 4th of July. I've kept mine on a leash in the house because they were so scared. If you're going out or will be out of town, consider kenneling your dog.

If your dog has to potty late at night, keep your dog on a leash, just this once. A random "boom" and your dog can be lost in an instant.

The next time you go to the vet with your dog, talk to your vet about meds/options for the 4th. You're already there and paid for the time. Discuss options that are right for your dog, your dog's breed and personality. It's better to be prepared ahead of time than hoping for the best on the 3rd or 4th.

If your dog is sensitive to noise, start working on desensitization with a trainer exposing your dog to scary stimulus gradually.

Make sure your dog is microchipped, has a collar with your information on it and even consider getting a Fi Collar that will lead you in the direction of where your dog is heading.

Do these things NOW because the next 4th of July will be here before you know it!

If you have any additional tips for the 4th of July, please add them in the comments.

Hi Friends! This sweet boy is on the euthanasia list at the Stanislaus Animal Shelter in Modesto. He's an 8 month old Dogo Argentino. If you or anyone you know might be interested in him, please get to the shelter ASAP to visit this boy and hopefully take him home.

My friend Crystal Dyrcz-Smith and I trapped this pup on Valley View Drive in Oakdale this morning. Apparently it has been running around town for quite a while now. I'll be taking it to the Oakdale Animal Shelter today to see if it has a chip. Will keep everyone posted.
