Here is a beautiful photo of a Yacaré caiman (Caiman yacare), or southern spectacled caiman with a lil' friend. This species is native to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay, and the largest individuals are just over 10'. Females usually lay clutches of 20-40 eggs during the rainy season.

Many of you guessed correctly! This is a Centralian rough knob-tailed gecko, more commonly known as Nephrurus amyae. These guys are from Australia and, in my opinion, are one of the cooler species of geckos out there. This original will be available once it's complete. Reference image was taken by .photos.graphics when we used to keep knobtails 😃

It is with great pride and admiration that we award this year's ARAV Fred Frye award to Dr. Peernel Zwart. A true pioneer in the realm of reptile and amphibian medicine, Dr. Zwart's unparalleled dedication and contributions to this field have left an indelible mark.

Dr. Zwart's journey into the world of herpetological medicine began in the Netherlands, where he embarked on a career that would span decades and revolutionize the way we understand and care for reptiles and amphibians. As a pathologist, he has played a pivotal role in elucidating numerous disease processes in these creatures, working alongside clinicians, biologists, and researchers to enhance diagnostics and husbandry practices.

His impact extends far beyond the laboratory and classroom. Dr. Zwart's passion for teaching has touched the lives of countless veterinary students, both as a professor and as a guest lecturer at numerous institutions. He has co-authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and proceedings abstracts, not to mention his role as the editor of several essential textbooks in multiple languages, shaping the education of clinicians and scientists worldwide. Even after officially retiring in 1990, his commitment remained unwavering as he continued to engage in research projects and mentor students.

The Fred Frye Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor ARAV bestows upon individuals for their life's work in herpetological medicine, and it is fitting that Peernel Zwart is the recipient. His outstanding accomplishments, contributions, and remarkable collaborative spirit exemplify the virtues celebrated by this prestigious accolade. His tireless dedication, enduring passion, and unwavering support of colleagues have paved the way for future generations of herpetological veterinarians and researchers.

In honoring Dr. Zwart with the Fred Frye award, we not only celebrate a lifetime of achievements but also acknowledge his enduring legacy—an inspiration for all those who share his love for reptiles and amphibians, and a testament to the boundless possibilities of a lifelong commitment to advancing the field of herpetological medicine.

The fringed leaf frog (Cruziohyla craspedopus), sometimes called the fringed tree frog, is native to high canopy rainforest in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and possibly Bolivia. Common names can be confusing of course, and there are at least two other species from elsewhere in the world which are known as a “fringed tree frog.” The conservation status for Cruziohyla craspedopus on the IUCN Red List is “least concern,” though it is believed to suffer somewhat from habitat fragmentation and habitat loss due to human activity.

There are roughly 149 species of “glass frogs” (some within that group are known as “leaf frogs”) within the Family Centrolenidae, and while that number is likely to change as more taxonomic research is done, these frogs are generally bright lime green, with abdominal skin that is either transparent or translucent, like glass, allowing the internal organs to be seen through the skin of the living frog. Native to tropical rainforests in Central and South America, these frogs are usually small bodied and arboreal in habit, with forward-facing eyes.

The photograph used in this post shows a La Palma glass frog (Hyalinobatrachium valerioi), a female, with an excellent view of its transparent abdominal skin. The photograph was taken by John P. Scales ‘N Tails opened its first store in Northglenn, CO in September of 1996. Since then, the high demand for our Animals, Products, and Services has lead us to open 5 other successful Colorado Front Range Locations. In 2015 we were ready to expand the business outside the State of Colorado, and opened a new location in Las Vegas, Nevada. A second Las Vegas store opened in December 2016, followed by a third in North Las Vegas in October 2019. All 8 stores are staffed with Animal Lovers who are experts in Reptile Care, so no matter which location you decide to visit, you're sure to get everything you need to keep a happy and healthy Exotic Pet.
