If you recently added a female puppy to your family, it's important to understand their heat cycles. Proestrus is the start of the heat period where your dogā€™s body is preparing to mate and averages about nine days. The estrus phase is the mating phase and usually lasts around 9 days, but can be as short as 3 or as long as 21 days. The diestrus phase occurs directly after the ā€œin heatā€ stage and lasts for about 2 months. Anestrus is the uterine repair phase, in which no sexual or hormonal behavior is present, and can last for anywhere from 90 to 150 days before the next proestrus stage begins.

No matter the climate of your area, your pet is consistently susceptible to heartworm infection. In many cases, initially, dogs that have been infected display no immediate symptoms, which unfortunately leads to intervention being ineffective. Therefore, it is important to administer year-round heartworm prevention to your pets. Contact us at (507) 720-6700 to learn more!

Did you know that you can actually help us to treat your petā€™s heart disease by counting their breathing rate at home? Watch out for other clues as well such as coughing, weakness, labored breathing, weight loss, decreased appetite, restlessness, and agitation during sleep amongst others. Generally, normal dogs and cats have a breathing rate of 15-30 breaths every minute when at rest. Resting breathing rates consistently greater than 30 per minute are considered abnormal and should be reported to us. If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, contact us at (507) 720-6700 so we can investigate further.
