Did you know that a CDC study found that professionals in the veterinarian field are 2 to 4 times more likely to die by su***de than the general population?

Studies also show that approximately 80% of veterinarians suffer from clinical depression at some point in their careers.

Each year, we particiapte in the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Fundraiser Walk in support of their efforts. They recently set a goal to reduce the su***de rate 20% by 2025 and YOU can help make that a reality!

You can donate to my personal fundraiser here: https://supporting.afsp.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.participant&participantID=3019542

You can sign up to join us at the walk and start your own fundraising here: https://supporting.afsp.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=register.start&eventID=10169&teamID=338624

Bogey and I went for our first walk together last week! It was one of the cooler afternoons we’ve had and I just couldn’t resist. He’s a big boy who knows what he wants, but I’m looking forward to us getting into a groove together on the leash. Over the weekend, his Pawrents booked our next slumber pawty… 😍 I can’t wait! 💙

Our very handsome furiend Atlas had a slumber pawty staycation last week and he got to unstuff his duck… it’s the little things. ✨

Let’s welcome Hermione to The Poppins Pack! 💜

This easygoing girl and I spent some time together last weekend for a series of Pop-In Visits. She enjoyed some quality time soaking up the sun in the flower bed and keeping watch at the storm door. We just love that smile and those ears! 😍 Das a good girl, “Miney!”

It’s Sunday Funday and we’re seriously considering heading back to the Ultimate Reptile Show! We checked it out yesterday in between Pop-In visits and there are SO MANY SPECIES to see and learn about.

I don’t have a TON of experience with the reptiles, but I’m always eager to learn. Thanks to Aaron with MKM Chameleons for letting me befriend this super cool Jackson’s chameleon! 😍

🐈‍⬛🏠 In my house, there’s the most pawfect black cat who stole my heart. 🖤 What’s your take on ‘em?

In the US, black cats are often associated with bad luck, particularly if one crosses your path. This superstition is believed to stem from medieval Europe, where black cats were thought to be witches in disguise or companions to witches.

🌍 Let’s look at the symbolism surrounding black cats in other parts of the world! 🌏

In Japanese culture, black cats are considered good luck, particularly for single women. It's believed that owning a black cat can attract potential suitors.

In some parts of the UK and Ireland, black cats are seen as symbols of good fortune and prosperity. A black cat crossing your path is generally considered a sign of good luck.

In Scottish folklore, a strange black cat arriving at your home signifies prosperity is coming.

In ancient Egypt, all cats, including black ones, were revered. They were associated with the goddess Bastet, who represented home, fertility, and domesticity.

In Germany, the belief in whether a black cat crossing your path is good or bad luck depends on the direction the cat is moving. If a black cat crosses from right to left, it’s considered bad luck, while left to right is a sign of good fortune.

In some regions of India, it is believed that black cats are bad omens and can bring bad luck.

In France, black cats are sometimes referred to as "matagots" and can bring good luck if treated well, such as being fed and respected.

In Italy, a black cat lying on a bed of a sick person is believed to signal that the person will die soon, which gives them a somewhat ominous association.

In China, black cats are traditionally viewed with suspicion, often associated with bad luck or misfortune, though this belief is not universally held.

📢 Welcome Remedy & Darcy to The Poppins Pack! ❤️

Funnily enough, at our meet & greet, their pawrents and I realized that we’ve passed each other on walks many times before as they live in the same neighborhood as another client! 😁 This week, these girls and I have been getting better acquainted during some Pop-In Visits. While I was informed that Darcy had a rough past and was skittish to new people, I’m happy to say we were fast friends - she even cuddled up next to me on the couch during the second visit. Remedy is no stranger to affection and gave her kisses freely. ☺️

Paws down, one of the BEST parts of my job! 😍

Check out the Ultimate Reptile Show at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center THIS WEEKEND!

We’ll be there Saturday to see what kinds of scaley, slithery, crawley critters there are. Hoping to see some tortoises (of any breed) and would love to see a tegu! What would you like to see at the expo?

There’s always something poppin’ along The Grand Strand and we love to share events that our followers might be interested in. If something’s coming up that you think we should share, send us the info!

Bogey works so hard on his puzzles, he deserved a confidence boost. Thanks to The Poppins Pack for rooting him on! He nailed this Level 2 one, though it DID take him almost 5 minutes. He was adamant about removing all of the lids on the red boxes, NOT just flipping them open. 👌🏻 Very thorough. 10/10 Good boy deserved some R&R in the sun after. 😎

It’s National Check the Chip Day! Which of the following actions can you take to ensure your pet has the best possible chance of return if lost?

1 - Microchip your pet(s).

2 - Check that all information registered to your pet’s microchip up-to-date.

3 - Have your veterinarian scan your pet’s chip at their next visit to ensure functionality and location.

What could you do with a little more peace of mind if you knew your pets were cared for in your absence?

Remember this Fab 4 who celebrated their 2 year pack-iversary recently? The Golden Girls - Zem, Zoi, Bella & Sophie and I got to catch up over the weekend. 👯‍♀️👯‍♀️ They’re living their best lives on the ICW. ⚓️ Their pawrents love that I can Pop-In on the girls (and sometimes their furiends who visit) while they spend the day on the water casting lines and reelin’ in the big ones! 🎣

Dallas’ feline siblings, Sake and Coal, are equally as affectionate. 🥰 They both enjoyed time on the catio this weekend as well as snuggle time in my arms. 🤗 Coal literally hugs onto my shoulders with his front paws when I hold him. He rubs his head up against mine and his little purr engine gets revvin’. Sake is the teeniest full grown cat I’ve ever seen and she’s so darn precious. Last night she climbed right up onto my chest/shoulder and perched. To be chosen as a substitute cat tree by a cat is a high honor. ❤️

Last weekend, The Poppins Pack lost our beloved furiend, 11 and a half year-old Newfoundland, Savannah.

While her pawrents were away, Savannah had started being “finicky” with food, not always eating at meal time or accepting treats or baby carrots. She had not stopped eating completely, but her desire had certainly declined. This isn’t entirely uncommon for pets when their hoomans are away or their routines are disrupted. I maintained in contact with Savannah’s pawrents about her appetite and general “mood.” They had an appointment scheduled during the week they return for some updated blood work and evaluation.

It was Sunday afternoon. With permission to spend “bonus time,” I had opted to stay and hang-around the house with Savannah and her sister, Ellie. While I was there, Savannah crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully, knowing she is loved and cared for. She was tired and I’m glad I stayed. Her pawrents were on an international flight home, which left me calling the listed Emergency Contact for assistance.

The hours after her passing were emotional and challenging, and an entirely invaluable experience as a professional pet care provider. Since starting my journey in this industry, my mind has not stopped thinking of possibilities and scenarios that could arise that I need to be prepared for. No matter what practices I had put in place, nothing prepared me for this kind of experience. My mind was racing with what to do next and how to grow from this experience.

Sweet Savannah, you taught me so much.

You reminded me that an Emergency Contact is an important role and needs to be considered as such. Savannah’s emergency contact is a close friend who knew how to act with respect to her pawrents’ wishes. She was informed, responsible and proactive. Because of this, we were able to navigate this scenario with care together. Her assistance took the kind of experience that I have nightmares about and made it more manageable. Choose your emergency contact wisely.

Losing Savannah motivated me to include a couple of new questions on my Pet Profiles, including preferred emergency veterinarian and a question regarding pawrents’ final wishes for their pet. Of course, direct communication with my clients is always preferred. While that question and these potential scenarios may be difficult to ponder, I feel the answer will enable me to exercise the utmost respect if ever faced with a similar situation in the future.

I love my job. My clients and their pets are true blessings and often become extensions of my own family. However, this job is not “easy.” It is not predictable, there is no standard operating procedure to download and apply to every possible situation. However, I vow to continue to work hard, to learn from every experience in order to continue to provide the absolute best possible care and positive experience for The Poppins Pack.

Thank you to Savannah, for teaching me so much in so little time. Thank you to her pawrents for trusting me with her care, for having a TOP NOTCH emergency contact (Thank you to her!), and for allowing me to share how she has helped shape me as a professional. ❤️
