There are so many reasons as to why minimally processed pet foodsđŸ« are better for your pet’s overall health span & lifespan versus ultra-processed pet foodsđŸ„«.

OtitisđŸ‘‚đŸŒ or ear infections in dogs, is a top 10 veterinary health problem according to research. They are often chronic, while treatment primarily consists of flushing, antibiotics, and/or antifungals.

In a new peer-reviewed veterinary study, scientists show that the prevalence of otitis was significantly reduced within the groups of dogs that were consuming from 26 to 100% of their diet as non-processed foods.

"On the other hand, eating 76–100% of the diet during puppyhood as kibble significantly increased the prevalence of otitis later in their life."

Furthermore, in another previous Finnish Veterinary study, scientists showed healthy human food leftovers offered to puppies significantly reduced allergy symptoms and skin problems later in life. This long-term, protective effect increased the more often real foods were added, so the more exposure puppies had to a variety of healthy leftovers, the more protection there was from developing skin issues down the road.

“
even if the dog eats 80% of its food as dry, adding a minimum of 20% of the food as raw significantly decreased the risk of AASS [allergic skin disease] later in life.” – Dr. Anna Hielm-Björkman

GREAT NEWS FOR LEWIS!!!!

On arrival at Glen Highland, the first thing Lewis heard from us was
’time for a new journey big guy’! So, we named him after the Lewis & Clark explorers. It’s clearly a bit of kismet that he’s now going to Nantucket for his home! The crazy ‘crack house’ life is way in the rear view mirror!
The ‘canine gods’ delivered for this sweet fella and we’re thrilled for the next step to unfold! Who knew he’d land in such a great place on the east coast! Way to go Lewis!

He will be cherished by former Glen Highland adopters who had a wonderful pair from us and with only one still alive, they wanted to add a new friend. Lewis caught their eye like he did many people but they had just the right situation
nice and quiet, rural with two acres fenced and around all the time plus a stable, happy, easy-going friend for him! Their original two alums were beloved coastal citizens and now Lewis steps into that role!

He heads out mid October once his neuter surgery is healed and we wish him very, very well!
Can’t wait to hear the antics with this charmer
he is such a ‘class clown’ kinda dog
a big puppy with lots of innocence! His new FurMom and FurDad are thrilled!

GUS BACK TO SPIRIT 9/23

Sadly we had to say goodbye to Gus very quickly
only 8 days and his body took charge. Frankly, one look at this sweet fella made us know there was trouble ahead. We’ve seen so many of these awful neglect cases and there just isn’t enough time to turnaround the deficits.

In Gus’s case, it was heartworm disease, renal failure and neurological complications as well as a backend he could barely hold up. We’ll never know if the 110 heat index took his brain and body into no return or if he was hit by a car or if he was just at the end of a very, very rough life, but today we gave Gus the freedom he needed. Seizure activity started and Gus was no longer present.

Gus swiftly left back to Spirit.

So, rather than dwell on the goodbye
it’s important to share the hello. Who arrived late into the evening from Texas was this lovely gem of a Border Collie. Good grief, just the sweetest nature and loving manners, just wanting to lean on you for a pet and belly rub. This guy had no regrets about whatever went on
he thought we were swell and life held love for him.
So trusting, so gentle, such an old soul type of Border Collie

It made sense that Gus found Glen Highland cause he knew we’d do it right. THAT is our promise
short or long stay
the choice is theirs and we merely offer the path with lots of love and care.

A short stay only marks a moment in time and space.
For Gus, it was the quality of that time
he soaked up the love right til the end.

Thank you Gus for gracing us with a pure innocent energy of trust. If the world was full of more of Gus’s gifts, it would be a far better place.

We are all grateful for his stop on his way home.
Godspeed GUS.

TWO FROM TEXAS NEXT WEEK!

Well...10 year old CHARLIE coming from Texas next week will have a BC buddy riding to Virginia with him
meet GUS

‘senior' is the age for now til we see him but it’s been confirmed Gus is an old fella and really needs a soft landing. He was found as a matted, exhausted, skinny Border Collie wandering along a highway in summer heat with the index at 110.

Thankfully, he was brought to a Texas shelter where he was diagnosed with heartworm disease. Gus has no teeth left and signs of a tough life on his body, but perked up to eating better and gaining some strength, even enjoying toys. He responds instantly to a whistle, coming to see what’s up so we hope that Gus will blossom with time and appropriate care
he surely is people friendly.
We are pleased to help Gus in whatever way he needs.

A little good news.

And sharing good news for ABBIE!!!

She is officially being adopted by her fosterers, farm favorites Sandy & Carlos who adopted seniors from GH back in NY and now reside in Texas. A huge thanks to them for opening their home and heart to her as a foster giving her safe refuge at age 13! and now, as a real part of the family. Apparently, this girl won their hearts with her sweetness though is not so great with the other dogs! Luckily, they will figure it out and she can have time in her final years where she is as special as ever!
Thank you both!

Why Consider Sterilization Alternatives Instead of the Traditional Spay and Neuter?

Pet sterilization is critical in addressing pet overpopulation. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that des*xing may not be appropriate in every instance. 👎 Spaying/neutering (removing the hormone-producing go**ds) dogs increases the risk for many diseases, including several types of cancer, along with behavioral problems. 💔

A just-published, first-of-its-kind study involving 6,000 dog owners also revealed that the bodies and brains of dogs benefit from maximum exposure to the s*x hormones. 🐕🧠

Visit today’s free pet health article on our new website to learn more about the findings of the study, as well as alternatives to spay and neuter: https://bit.ly/3Q6s71m
