Over the weekend I drove to Irving TX to compete at the US Pet Pro Classic. I am an open level competitor, which means it's filled with high skill sets and talent galore with oodles of experienced groomers.

The class I compete in is called all other pure breds (AOPB). It must be done to standard and by hand (no cheating). I placed 1st in a tough class with some amazing people. I went back for Best In Show where I am in a stage with the winners from every class. Poodles, Wire, Sporting, AOPB

Um, yes. I won BIS. Which is HUGE!!! Among some of the Nation's best, I won it all!!

Hand stripping what is it? In a nutshell it's pulling coat to achieve a coarse outer coat that is weatherproof. It is not pulling just top coat leaving undercoat. That definition I have seen is totally wrong and misleading. On what is called a blown coat, depending on the breed. The entire coat is pulled, not just top coat. Maintenance stripping is pulling long or bulky spots to give correct thickness, tightening the jacket and keeping the coat from fully "blowing". Undercoat must be mucked or carded out to keep it from getting out of control. Hand stripping is incredibly high maintenance and tedious. So therefore it's expensive. But again do not pay high price for no experience!

Does it hurt.....if started young and done correctly, absolutely not. Just make sure you go to someone who knows how to pull correctly, has correct tools and understands stripping terriers, sporting dogs, herding breeds, etc are all done all. No two strips are exactly the same. It takes having knowledge of coat!!!

Here's a picture of an Airedale who is stripped. He is done WEEKLY to maintain his coat for show. He actually goes to sleep while being pulled to where he weaves and I have to wake him up. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I was asked why I am not taking on new clients. So I will explain the best I can why.

1. The main reason is because I have so many regular, amazing clients that I cannot book anyone new without affecting the schedule of existing clients. If I book new clients, regular clients cannot get in and that is not fair to people who have been loyal to me for decades.

2. Some new people either don't prebook with existing groomers and just call around seeing who can get them in, end up booking several places and just no show whoever couldn't get them in, in the time they wanted, costing those groomers money.

3. Price shoppers call around to see who is cheapest regardless of the work they put out, and do the exact same thing as above.

4. New people don't like their current groomer and want to get in, call several places to "try" someone else and get in whoever has first availability and again no shows the others.

So my advice is if I make an exception to book a new client because a regular moved, passed away, etc. DO NOT NO SHOW ME. I will not rebook you, period. That is money out of my pocket. If you can't make an appointment wheather it be grooming or anyone else who works by appointment, be courteous and call and cancel so it can be rebooked. Making an appointment and then no showing is incredibly rude. I understand people forget, things happen, it takes seconds to call and cancel.

Please read the whole thing. You must research your groomer, ask questions. Someone with no experience or even any hands on experience can seriously injure your pets!

Did you know that pet grooming is a completely unregulated industry? There is no requirement for formal education, no required continuing education, and no required testing or certification?

Anyone and everyone can just pick up a pair of clippers and start advertising themselves as a groomer and charge people for a service they aren’t trained to perform.

It’s completely up to you, the owner, to do your research and make sure the person you are trusting with the health and safety of your pet is qualified to care for them.

Every groomer should be trained, and that very basic training takes months.

It takes years to truly master the ins and outs of grooming and everything that goes along with it.

Pet grooming is so much more than just a hair style.

*It’s knowing dog behavior and how to safely handle all the different personalities and quirks.

*It’s recognizing health conditions that would be better suited seeing a vet such as skin or ear infections.

*It’s being prepared for any and all emergencies that can happen, from seizures to allergic reactions, to nicks and cuts and quicked toenails without panicking.

*It’s knowing how to best deal with a variety of coat types properly.

*It’s being able to know when to stop a service on a particular dog due to behavior or health.

*It’s having the knowledge and patience to handle a different species while holding razor sharp clippers or 8 inch long scissors.

At the very least, the groomer you use should seek out continuing education to make sure they are current on the changes in the industry, from upgrades in products to tools that make the process easier for the pet and them.

They should be current on their pet cpr/first aid certification which needs repeated every couple of years.

They should be able to answer your grooming related questions with knowledge and confidence and if they don’t know the answer they should know where to find it.

They should have an emergency plan in place with a local veterinarian in case anything happens, because when working with animals it’s not a matter of if something happens, but when.

They should come recommended by other pet owners and pet professionals.

And it’s worth noting that there is nothing wrong with using a groomer that is still in training, but they should be working alongside an experienced groomer and under their direct supervision.

Ask the questions, after all you are paying them for a service. A groomer who has spent time and money to be as educated as possible is excited to share their knowledge!

This is what a real NCMG looks like. Too many groomers asvertise as "master groomers" and have self made certificates. Or they have a certificate of completion from online courses/schooling. Which neither is considered "certified".
