Dr. Jane Goodall helped show the world that animals are not objects. Something that we really loved about her is that she helped people to understand the intrinsic value of animals, and the need for them to be treated with respect.

Most people rightfully associate Dr. Goodall’s legacy with chimpanzees, but you may not have known that her favorite animals were actually dogs! Dogs originally taught her that animals have emotions and personalities, and are capable of empathy. A lesson she went on to teach the world 💙

Her vision paved the way for a more compassionate world, and we are proud to continue that work every day caring for and advocating on behalf of animals who rely on us. What lessons did she help you learn, did she change your view of animals?

Train your dog before thinking of Hiking the NH Mountains- Your Dogs Need Training Before Climbing Big Mountains

Hiking in NH isn’t just scenic — it’s tough on pups. Granite slabs + steep climbs = a lot of wear and tear, especially on paws and fitness.

What Every Hiker Should Know

Dogs can’t just “wing it” from molehills to mountains — they need conditioning & gradual build-up.

Granite is sharp. It can shred paw pads if dogs aren’t used to it.

Poor conditioning can lead to fatigue, injury, or slipping.

Training Tips for Paws + Strength
Start with short walks on uneven terrain → gradually increase distance & incline.
Introduce rocky/granite surfaces in small doses so their paws toughen up.

Carry paw protection (boots or paw balm) until their feet are used to the terrain.

Strengthen muscles: practice hill repeats, stairs, and core work.

Rest & recovery are just as important — watch for limping, soreness, or reluctance to walk.

Do Your Research
Learn about local trails & how rocky they are.
Check dog-friendly trail ratings.
Ask other hikers or local pet/hiking groups what works in NH.

With good preparation, your pup can enjoy the trails safely — pain-free pads, stronger legs, and happier adventures.

Hiking in NH with Your Dog This Fall

Fall is the perfect season to hit the trails with your pup — but it’s also a time to be prepared.

BEFORE YOU GO
Make sure ID tags & microchip are updated
Dress your dog in bright orange for visibility
Keep your dog leashed or on a long line
Carry a recent photo of your dog
Pack water, snacks, first aid kit, & an extra leash

Keep canned food, liquid smoke & Vienna sausages in your car — you may be able to help if your dog or someone else’s dog goes missing

If Your Dog Goes Missing
Stay calm & stay put — dogs often circle back
Do not chase or yell; sit quietly instead
Leave familiar scent items at the trailhead
Call Granite State Dog Recovery at 855-639-5678

Fill out a Lost Dog Report here https://form.jotform.com/41926059505154

Share info to hiking groups & town pages in the area

Wait safely near the trailhead or your car

A little preparation can make all the difference — let’s keep our dogs safe on the trails this fall!

🐾 We’re Accepting New Clients – Starting Today! 🐾

We’re excited to announce that our clinic will be opening to new clients on a first-come, first-served basis.

To establish care, new clients must:
✔️ Complete our new client form
✔️ Provide complete medical records (emailed or hand-delivered) before we are able to schedule your first appointment
✔️ Provide a non-refundable deposit that will be applied to your first exam

Please note: we are NOT accepting urgent or emergency cases for new clients.
We are also unable to take on new large animal/farm clients at this point.

As a small clinic with only two veterinarians and one exam room, space is limited—we expect availability to fill quickly and it is likely we will have to close our client list again before the year ends. Our priority is ensuring timely, high-quality care for all of our patients.

📞 Contact us soon if you’d like to join our clinic family!

The Healthy Swimming Mapper is updated daily - please be sure to check before swimming with your dogs in the lakes from now through the fall! Cyanobacteria blooms can be deadly for your dogs to swim through.

Planning to spend some time swimming in New Hampshire’s lakes, rivers or ponds this weekend? Be sure to visually assess the water before dipping your toes in. Stay up-to-date on cyanobacteria blooms using the NHDES Healthy Swimming Mapper, and report any potential blooms to NHDES: https://www.des.nh.gov/water/healthy-swimming/healthy-swimming-mapper

Update: September 22, 2025 - we are now accepting new clients. Please see the most recent post with information.

ATTENTION: As of April 21, 2025, we are unable to take on new clients. We will update this post when our client list is open again but we do not expect that we will be able to accommodate new clients until the fall.
This is not a decision we come to lightly and we know how hard it is to find care right now. Our commitment to our current clients and patients, though, guides this decision so we can provide care, both emergency and preventative, in a timely fashion.tse

Carl thinks that sun sure feels good but melting snow means ticks are officially out! We’ve already had at least one client come in this week reporting they’ve found a tick on their dog.
If you don’t keep your pets on year-round tick preventatives, it’s time to start back up.
Make sure to check when you put that Seresto collar on - they are only effective for 6 months.
