Oh, there are so many layers that go into training a formal recall or, come when called, cue. Cheryl is demonstrating so many of them in this short clip with Day Training dog, Raven. First and foremost, Raven is on leash so that, if needed, Cheryl can direct her to make the right choice during the session. Second, she is utilizing response to name as a gage for the dogs attention before asking her to "come." Once in motion (the criteria for a recall) Cheryl marks with the clicker and delivers the food reward close. She releases Raven to sniff with her release cue "break" before asking for another rep. After some warm ups with these steps, Cheryl layers in some lured collar grabs to avoid any head shy behavior.
Do you want a certified professional dog trainer to practice these skills and more with your dog while you are busy at or with work? Email us for more information on our in-home Day Training Program!

My favorite team! We grabbed coffee at this week's lesson and Satr was so well mannered and behaved. She and her handler received some lovely comments from the very friendly staff and patrons Coffee and Stone Cafe.

Trainer Cheryl demonstrates teaching the switch in heel position as well as real life application. Teams learn this behavior in HDO Level 2.
Think your dog could use this skill?!

Clark and his handler demonstrate perfectly what the final picture should be at step 3 in mat / station training. He finds a down when cued to his mat, his mom can turn and walk away 5-10 steps (or the length of the leash in class) before returning for reward, then she can leave him and walk away in another direction. If you have a goal of being able to park your dog in a stay when you need them not be under foot, this is the perfect behavior to train! Our next session of HDO classes will be open for registration June 1st. Check the website to enroll or send us an email: [email protected]
See you in class!

Star is working on that recall at rocket speed!
We practiced advocating for our dogs in House Dog Obedience Level 3 last night. Sometimes, it is safe and appropriate to let our dogs say hello, and sometimes it's not! You don't need to justify politely declining an interaction and using your own body language to end that interaction if that person doesn't listen. #dogtraining #noyoucantsayhi #gooddog #sociallyresponsibledogownership #normalizealldogsdontwanttobepet
