Furby’s home! After a two night stay at Bolton, we are grateful to have our happy, bouncing bunny back. He’s still on the mend and is on meds to help break up the intestinal blockage.

Once Furby is feeling 100% better, he will be available for adoption. He is already neutered and Dr. Zyra estimated him to be 5-6 years old. Furby is a Jersey Wooly and needs DAILY brushing and an occasional clipper cut to prevent matting. This high-maintenance fellow will reward your efforts with so much love!

Yesterday we took in the sweetest bunny who was rescued from a neglectful situation. The rescuer immediately discovered he was badly matted and needed professional care. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find bunny groomers, and an emergency vet suggested contacting us.

Last night, once our new little friend was dropped off at the shelter, we went to work removing mats. In all, we removed about 2 lbs of matted fur, which had been preventing him from standing and hopping around and was badly stained. His entire body was covered—not even the back of his head was spared. Once we had most mats removed, he happily hopped around, enjoying a freedom he probably hasn’t felt in a long time. We named him Furby.

This morning when we went to check on the shelter bunnies, Furby was hiding behind his litterbox, hunched over in pain and looking miserable. He hadn’t eaten and his p**ps were few and super stringy. He also felt cold. We gave him meloxicam for the pain and gas drops in case they could help, but we knew he needed to see a vet ASAP. We wrapped him in a warm blanket and snuggled with him until his ride (another shelter volunteer) picked him up.

At the vet, he was hypothermic so he was immediately admitted. Poor boy had stringy p**ps in his intestine and was dehydrated. He’s now in the best of care at and we are both worried and hopeful.

Fribble has fully recovered from her (unnecessary) spay and is back to her fiesty self. Her bunnitude quickly melts away when she gets snuggles! She clearly has quite a bit of Nethie in her.

Fribble will be fully vaccinated for RHDV2 by early February, after which she can be adopted. Some folks have expressed interest in bonding, but we think this senior gal would more likely want to be queen of her own domain.

Bunny butts!

Peggy and Angie are getting down to a nice healthy weight. Their fosterers say that with the right bunny proofing and attention they would do so well in a forever home. Peggy doesn’t like it when her foster parents make the bed or clean in their bedroom which is next to the room they’re in—and will stomp!—but doesn’t seem all that concerned with the vacuum. Angie is curious and more treat motivated but a bit less into getting pats.

Peggy and Angelica came to WMRR in the late 2021. It’s high time we fine these sweet sisters their forever home! Email westernmassrabbitrescue AT gmail DOT com for an application.

Oolong and her sister Ceylon were being just too cute during their Bunukah photoshoot that we had to share this “outtake”! These sweet sisters never sit still for long—there’s always something to explore!

Oolong and Ceylon are a little shy but warm up pretty quickly. They are gorgeous mini rexes with plush fur coats. The great thing about adopting a bonded pair is that they keep each other company—for folks who want to adopt but may have a full work schedule, a bonded pair can be a great choice!

Adopted!

We are so happy for sweet Astrea to have FINALLY found her forever home! This sweet girl had three litters and was living in a cramped hotel room with a number of humans and pets. We took her in along with her mate (not bonded!) and babies from three litters!

Once Astrea was done nursing her last group we had her spayed and she’s been seeking her forever home since. We are SO HAPPY for sweet Astrea and her awesome new humans!

Peggy and Angelica are chilling after playing in their new digging box and with their new Christmas toys. These two big girls were first rescued in the fall of 2021 and have been patiently waiting to find their forever home! They love eating hay, snuggling with each other, and bunstruction. They would do best in a quiet home where they get to be the center of attention. Shy at first, they warm up with treats and are curious and playful.

Email westernmassrabbitrescue AT gmail DOT com for an application. Let’s find these two beautiful girls their forever family in this new year!

Rabbit medical kits:

Since we are a rescue and take in rabbits often with unknown health histories, we keep certain meds on hand. Benebac helps rebalance gut health, while we use fenbendazole for treating parasites. Both are available over the counter (we recommend Chewy) but we do not use them unless a veterinarian has directed us to (often based on testing f***l samples).

Simethicone, or infant gas drops, can help rabbits experiencing gas. It has been indispensable to us in stopping stasis in its tracks when a bunny is gassy. Also available over the counter at any drug store.

By Rx only but worth asking for from your vet to have in your emergency kit (ask your vet for dosages):

Metoclopramide - when a bunny is in stasis and not eating or p**ping, this motility drug can help a LOT

Meloxicam - stasis often starts when a bunny is in pain. Meloxicam is helpful pain medicine to have on hand.

Lactated ringers - this is what we use when we administer fluids to a dehydrated bunny. We warm the bag using a heating pad and use a small gauge butterfly needle. We have seen rabbits make amazing rebounds after receiving fluids, but should only be done if you have been trained by your vet.

Fribble’s spay surgery ended up being unnecessary; apparently having so many different owners over the years meant no health history. She wasn’t feeling very well and didn’t want to eat her pellets, so we brought her to the Bunny Sanctuary for some extra TLC.

We gave her pain medicine, motility meds, administered subcutaneous fluids, warmed her with a heating pad, fed her critical care, and gave her a concoction of wet pellets, banana, and oats. She finally started to relax and eat on her own, and she’s using her litterbox normally again.

Health scares like this are a daily part of rabbit rescue. We are grateful that our veterinarians give us the tools we need to treat at home, which is always preferable to a long car ride, lots of waiting, or the dreaded “no exotics staff on today.”

Fribble is feeling a lot better thanks to at-home interventions. We will be making a separate post today with a bunny first-aid checklist.

*If a bunny does not p**p for 24 hours they should see an exotics vet ASAP!*

Warmest wishes for a happy eighth day of Chanukah from Oolong and Ceylon!

Oolong and her sister Ceylon thought they had a forever home lined up, but we haven’t heard back from their potential adopter and fear we’ve been ghosted. So, we are back on the hunt for a forever home for these adorable but shy mini rex sisters.
