With 10 seasons behind us, we are feeling so grateful for everyone who has believed in this project and been part of building and caring for this special place and community.

Yesterday we dug up our dahlia tubers for winter storage. Six years ago Lauri Meade established this dahlia garden in loving memory of her daughter Madison z"l. Each year she and friends plant the shriveled tubers in the spring and then dig up fat starchy ones in the fall. In between, everyone gets to enjoy the extraordinary beauty of these radiant blooms--free for all to pick. It's a gift to witness this miraculous cycle of life. Madison's memory will forever be a blessing.

Amazing opportunity this Sunday at to learn about the ecological crisis through the lens of Jewish theology with Professor Mara Benjamin.

"Ecological crisis and Redemption" with Mara Benjamin
This Sunday, November 17, 2024 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM at CBI

Traditionally, Jews have understood redemption to concern the future not only of the Jewish people, but also of the non-Jewish and non-human world. What meaning can traditional ideas of "redemption" have given that the future of humans (and many lifeforms) have been foreshortened and diminished by the intensive burning of carbon? Mara H. Benjamin, a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow, is a scholar of modern Jewish religious thought and a constructive Jewish theologian. She teaches and writes at Mount Holyoke College (South Hadley, Massachusetts), where she is Irene Kaplan Leiwant Professor and Chair of Jewish Studies.

OFFERING: potted lemon verbena!

Before the first frost, we dug up our lemon verbena plants and put them in pots. Lemon verbena is a tender perennial, meaning it can live for many years if not exposed to hard freezes. Want a mature lemon verbena plant for your garden at home? Grab one of these plants now (for free, as always) from inside our greenhouse and take it inside for the winter. Keep it barely moist and in a sunny window. The plant may drop its leaves but don't worry! In the spring you'll see some regrowth and you can put it back outside, either in a larger pot or in the ground.

Please drop by our greenhouse this week or next and take a potted plant home! (Just make sure that if the door was closed when you arrived, close it again on your way out.)

Got tips for overwintering this plant? Questions? Let us know in the comments.

Thanks to everyone who came out to make our Sukkot gathering last week so special! How good it was to be together for this holiday! We pressed lots of cider, enjoyed the warm fall weather, and said heartfelt prayers for the earth, channeled through our farm-grown willow branches.

A special shout-out to and for so many delicious apples.

Fall is really here, and that means it's the very last week of PYO for the whole year! We hope you take advantage of this last week and help yourself to a few carrots, raspberries, and herbs. Besides a limited amount of Amara and Kale greens, food will no longer be available to harvest starting in November, and we will not have any harvest tools or containers available.

It's so helpful to get feedback from the community! If you harvested anything from Abundance Farm this year, please take our 5-minute survey. You'll be glad you did! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PYO2024EN

Tomorrow Wed 10/30 3-6pm will be a special edition of Community Harvest Hours featuring a community seed swap. Bring seeds or plants to swap and share with others.

And after that, we have a story circle and potluck around the fire from 6-7:30. We hope you can join us for our last events of the season!

As of October 28, the bike path in Northampton is closed for improvements. According to the city, the bike path will be inaccessible for at least 30 days to allow for repaving, tree trimming, and installation of ADA-compliant curb ramps. The trail will be closed from Look Park at the West to King St at the East, which means that Abundance will be inaccessible from the Bike Path.

Abundance Farm is still accessible from Prospect St, with parking always available at the Water Building at 237 Prospect.

I know some of you have been planning to help with garlic planting this Friday 10/11. Unfortunately the route closure means we will be unable to host volunteers, as the regular path to our fields via the bike path will be inaccessible. Thanks for your engagement, and we're excited to get folks involved in other community projects next spring!

ABUNDANCE FARM WANTS YOUR LEAVES

This year we turned the community's leaves into some incredible compost. Compost made from leaves is perfect for our needs: it's low in nutrients that could leach and run off into waterways, but high in carbon that gives our soil structure and keeps it healthy.

If you have leaves this fall that are looking for a home, we'd love to take them off your hands. You can drop off leaves behind the water building at 237 Prospect St. Look for the sign in one of the bays along the fence and dump your leaves there.

If your leaves are in bags, please remove them from the bags first. Additionally, keep leaves to the right side of the bay so we can still access our finished leaf compost under the tarp. Just leaves, please! Because of the specific end product we're going for, we're not looking for any other types of organic waste.

Thanks for the leaves, and for keeping the carbon and spirit cycling in our community!

Tonight we usher in the one-day festival of Shmini Azeret. Tomorrow morning Jews around the world will recite Tefilat Geshem--the Prayer for Rain which invokes the merit of Jewish ancestors in requesting the rain on which all life depends. Here is a Prayer for Rain video that some of us made a number of years ago for The Jewish Farm School z"l. I still find it affecting. May the rains come this year for all of creation, for a blessing. Chag Sameach!
