Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day. 🌈 This day is dedicated to celebrating the lives of our past pets and the joy, comfort, laughter, and unconditional love they brought us. Don’t forget that part of the relationship included the care provided by you. ❤️ They become family and we will be forever grateful for the companionship of our pets.

August is 💉 Just like us, it's important to stay on top of your pet's vaccines and immunizations. According to AVMA, here are 5 reasons why you should vaccinate your pets:

💉 Vaccinations prevent many pet illnesses.
💉 Vaccinations can help avoid costly treatments for diseases that can be prevented.
💉 Vaccinations prevent diseases that can be passed between animals and also from animals to people.
💉 Diseases prevalent in wildlife, such as rabies and distemper, can infect unvaccinated pets.
💉 In many areas, local or state ordinances require certain vaccinations of household pets.

Contact your primary care veterinarian to ensure your pet's vaccinations are up to date."

Are you curious as to why your pet keeps scratching? Not sure how to provide them with some relief? 🐶🐱 Itchy skin could signify flea allergy dermatitis, hotspots, atopic dermatitis, or a skin infection.

It’s best to identify that there is an issue early as this makes it easier to treat!
Treatment options may include applying anti-parasitic ear drops, medication to treat infections caused by scratching, and ongoing parasite prevention 🐾 To identify the best treatment for your pet's condition, always consult with your primary care veterinarian for guidance.

If your pet is experiencing an infection contact Northfield Veterinary Center at (609) 277-3700 and we'd be happy to help.

Northfield Veterinary Center offers outpatient ultrasounds for our clients and outside referrals! You may know him from our Linwood Pet Hospital location, now help us give Dr. Portner a warm welcome to the Northfield Veterinary Center team!

After graduating from Tufts University of Veterinary Medicine in 2004, Dr. Portner completed a small animal rotating internship at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in 2005. He finished his residency at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists in 2008 and became a board-certified specialist in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine in 2009.

He has enjoyed responsibility in a variety of roles over the course of his career: from helping start the residency program at OSVS, becoming the first Emergency and Critical Care specialist in a busy and growing emergency and specialty practice in central New Jersey, and serving in the roles of Emergency Director and Medical Director.

Diagnostic ultrasound has been part of Dr. Portner’s clinical role throughout his career, and these previous experiences all led him to be able to help patients the most as a mobile ultrasound practitioner and consultant for difficult to manage cases.

Dr. Portner serves on the NJVMA Executive board, as well as works with the NJVMA task force for continuing education, the NJVMA legislative committee, and is the lead for the opioid epidemic task force, all of which enable him to be an advocate for the health and safety of pets in New Jersey and the improvement and security of the veterinary profession.

Did you know 1 in 3 family pets will get lost in their lifetime? (AVMA)

serves as a reminder to all pet owners to microchip your pets and keep the chip registration information updated regularly! Microchips greatly increase the chances that pets will be reunited with their families if they are lost or stolen.

Heading off to the pool or beach this summer with your furry friend? Check out these water safety tips to make sure your pet has fun while staying safe. ☀️

🔹 Pick a shallow spot to start out and stay close to the edge of the water.
🔹 Don’t force them. Throwing a pet in the water who doesn’t want to swim can be traumatic and may prevent them from enjoying the water later on.
🔹 Get in the water with them. When they start paddling with their front paws, lift their hind end so they understand how to float.
🔹 Keep them on a leash at first so they can’t stray too far away from you.

🌡 Also, be sure to stay aware of the temperature! While swimming may cool you and your pet down, hot sand or pavement poses a threat to your pet's paws. If you can't hold the back of your hand to the ground for at least 10 seconds without feeling a burn, it's too hot for your pet to walk on!

If you experience an emergency with your pet this summer contact Northfield Veterinary Center at (609) 277-3700. We are open Monday - Sunday from 8:00am - midnight.

The Northfield Veterinary Team LOVES a good puppy cuddle session! Our staff recently got to snuggle an adorable litter of 11, yes you read that right.. 11 puppies!

When we have a litter of puppies come in for their first check-up, it's all hands on deck. While one team member is recording names and vitals, the rest of the team divides and conquers all the other tasks, obtaining the vitals, nail trimming, holding for exams, and administering vaccines. It's quite impressive watching this team of ours work together; while enjoying puppy snuggles at the same time!!

We are just over a week away from the 4th of July!

Ham would like to take this time to remind our wonderful pet parents that now is time to refill your pet's prescriptions to help with the stress and anxiety that fireworks can cause. In addition, here are some other helpful tips you can do to keep your 4-legged best friend calm during the 4th of July celebrations:
🐾 Keep your pet indoors! Loud noises can spook them causing them to run away, become lost, or severely injured
🐾 Have some calming classical music playing, this can help drown out the noises of fireworks
🐾 Create a safe place for your pet to hide, their crate with a blanket draped over it, or a nice cozy bed in their favorite room
🐾 The use of calming pheromones can be helpful too! Check out ThunderEase for dogs and Feliway for cats.
🐾 Check out ThunderShirt, made for both cats and dogs to help with anxiety
🐾 Stay inside with your pet, snuggle up in bed with them, and watch your favorite movie!

Give us a call today at our Linwood location (609)926-5300 or our Northfield location (609)277-3700; our dedicated team will happily assist you with refilling your pet's medications so that they can have a safe and happy 4th of July! ❤️🤍💙
