Sully, in our “Start Up” Board and Train program, on a field trip to practice his skills out in the real world. It’s easy to forget that he’s only 7 months old. It’s rare to see a dog this age with this degree of handler awareness and the ability to self regulate. He wasn’t born this way. It’s all trained behavior AND it’s doable for any dog of this age. This training isn’t just for trainers either. We can all do it if we make it important and take it step by step. No doubt, A LOT of intention, attention, and consistency went into shaping Sully’s response to this new and exciting environment. It’s a commitment his owners have made to him, and his future success, and it will make it possible for them to have many more enjoyable experiences together. Want some help? We can work with you to learn these skills in Private Training or through our Board and Train programs. It all depends on what works best for you and your particular situation. The great news is, these skills are the foundational groundwork needed for any dog, so once learned, you can apply it on your own indefinitely, for any dog, at any time. Please visit our website to learn more about our programs www.cervantesdogtraining.com. A special thanks to our local Gillespie’s and Kenyon’s for inviting us in to practice! We don’t take these opportunities for granted and we are very grateful.❤️
Training Tip
Working on impulse control with little Nuggie who’s got A LOT of drive. How do you call your dog off when needed and reel them back in during times of high excitement/high distraction? Drill it. We use a tease poll/flirt poll to raise the excitement level in a controlled setting. We decide when the game starts and when the game ends and give her a chance to win throughout so that she stays engaged. She needs to move out and leave it when the game is stopped and then she needs to wait for the ok to move in to start the game again. This teaches handler awareness as well as self regulation by request, necessary skills for every dog, but especially those like Nuggie who have gotten themselves in trouble before making poor decisions on their own. Nuggie is in our Board and Train program and she’s doing very well! We have openings in this program!
