How lucky we are to have others who believe in us and want us to do our best! This isn’t any different for our dogs either. It’s unsettling that we’re being told by certain trainers and pet care professionals that any pressure in training is abusive. That a dog should only ever want to do something and never ever be made to do something. If we were told by our parents, mentors, or leaders that we only ever needed to do what we wanted to do, and were never pushed for anything else, it’s very troubling to think of where we would be. No wonder dogs are abandoned, rehomed, surrendered, and euthanized so much.

These are sometimes called “stress” signs. We don’t use that word though. “Stress”, instead of being a signal for gathering important information and taking appropriate action, has unfortunately come to mean “all things that are bad” and reason to stop/avoid whatever has triggered it.

It’s not bad that a dog on occasion may have these feelings and communicates these feelings to us. Noticing is a mark of awareness and awareness is so so important! If you’re not sure what to do with the information your dog is giving you, it just means that more needs to be learned about dog handling. With the confidence that comes with an expanded skillset, you can help guide your dog through.✨ www.cervantesdogtraining.com

We have clients very honestly say that they are nervous they might mess up while practicing their new training techniques in front of us. We’re just so grateful they’ve taken their first steps, and we understand that this is like anything else we learn from the beginning, it can be imperfect and messy at first.

So, we’re editing the quote a little…it’s not just “that” small step. It is “your” small step. Wherever you might be. Or however imperfect it is. It’s ok. Just start. We’ll be there to walk you through.
