The Southwick Farm has been going through many big changes! Many are noticeable just by driving by! The brittle hay barn has been taken down and windows throughout the house have been replaced. The interior was upgraded with new walls and running water. Though there has been a nearly endless list of updates and changes done the builders and contractors have kept the integrity of Southwick Farm in mind and the old farm house will forever have it's classic beauty and "old time" feel!

Mischief has crossed the rainbow bridge to join Bert and many other horses on endless rolling pastures. She was the last horse to pull Berts egg wagon but her legacy lives on in her two fillies and foal.

A year ago as of the first of February NH lost a great farmer. Residents all over NH miss Bert and his friends go all across the US. Bert helped create a great sense of community with his small town attitude and classic way of doing things. His farm will always remain as a part of Northfield's history. As for Bert he is forever a town icon and his image and ways resinate with everyone who has ever met him.
"For this one farmer the worries are over, lie down and rest your head,
Your time has been and struggles enough, put the tractor in the shed.
Years were not easy, many downright hard, but your faith in God transcended,
Put away your tools and sleep in peace. The fences have all been mended.
You raised a fine family, worked the land well and always followed the Son,
Hang up your shovel inside of the barn; your work here on earth is done.
A faith few possess led your journey through life, often a jagged and stony way,
The sun is setting, the cattle are all bedded, and here now is the end of your day.
Your love of God’s soil has passed on to your kin; the stories flow like fine wine,
Wash off your work boots in the puddle left by blessed rain one final time.
You always believed that the good Lord would provide and He always had somehow,
Take off your gloves and put them down, no more sweat and worry for you now.
Your labor is done, your home now is heaven; no more must you wait,
Your legacy lives on, your love of the land, and we will close the gate."
Nancy Kraayenhof.

We are sad to share Mischief has been diagnosed with cancer. After noticing a small bump on her face this summer her veterinarian was called and soon after confirmed the bump was indeed cancerous. She is still as happy as ever she's 27 and she did the egg route with Bert for about 12 years. No need to worry about her because she's receiving a lot of love, care and is comfortable. Thank you all for keeping Bert's spirit alive and it lives on in this horse and three of Mischiefs babies Misty, Natchice and Lacey.

THE OLD FARMERS PRAYER
Time just keeps moving on
Many years have come and gone
But I grow older without regret
My hopes are in what may come yet.
On the farm I work each day
This is where I wish to stay
I watch the seeds each season sprout
From the soil as the plants rise out.
I study Nature and I learn
To know the earth and feel her turn
I love her dearly and all the seasons
For I have learned her secret reasons.
All that will live is in the bosom of Earth
She is the loving mother of all birth
But all that lives must pass away
And go back again to her someday.
My life too will pass from Earth
But do not grieve, I say, there will be other birth
When my body is old and all spent
And my soul to Heaven has went.
Please compost and spread me on this plain
So my body Mother Earth can claim
That is where I wish to be
Then Nature can nourish new life with me.
So do not for me grieve and weep
I did not leave, I only sleep
I am with the soil here below
Where I can nourish life of beauty and glow.
Here I can help the falling rain
Grow golden fields of ripening grain
From here I can join the winds that blow
And meet the softly falling snow.
Here I can help the sun’s warming light
Grow food for birds of gliding flight
I can be in the beautiful flowers of spring
And in every other lovely thing.
So do not for me weep and cry
I am here, I do not die.

Old Home Day was dedicated to Bert and though he was not there in person he was there in spirit making sure they don't drive his tractors too fast. Bert was never in a rush to get anywhere but he always got it all done!

06/28/2015

Today was a beautiful day. Weather was perfect for a parade in honor of Bert and we would love to share any photos of the floats and tractors dedicated to Bert. Also his celebration of life was full of happy memories and laughs about Bert and his quick wit. A crowd of friends and family went together to the cemetery to say some last good byes but also to remind all of us that Bert lives in all of us. In every memory and story he is tied to many people. No memory or friendship more valuable or important to another. He lived a strong and happy 91 years meeting hundreds of people and changing their lives. At the his ceremony we were reminded to think of him when we feel a warm breeze or a new bud of a plant and he is now another star above us to always be there when we need him.

Just to keep everyone informed as to what's going on concerning Bert Southwick's services. Saturday June 27th from 4:00 to 6:00 there will be a Celebration of Life at the Southwick school . Then there will be a funeral procession from the school down Park Street to the Park Street Cemetary.

Hi, would you be interested in 2 bantam Cockerels. 1 is a columbian and the other is a mixed. Very friendly. And highly possible that they were hand reared.
I just found this page! It is awesome. Bert and Edna were cousins of my mother. I remember going up to the farm as a kid years ago....shortly after a big fire. We were on vacation and this was a stop. My Grandfather, Howard Vittum, was Aunt Vida's brother. He passed away in 1990. I do not recall hearing that Bert had passed. I'm glad that the farm is continuing on. I remember the farm and have always planned to stop in when I'm up in that area again. I'll have to show this page to Mom....thanks.
I'm curious to know what the tree work is for that is going on at the farm now... I hear them all day behind my house through the trees, so they are doing a lot of work! Does anyone know?
Living in the neighborhood, I am happy to see all of the positive changes going on at the farm while still keeping it's integrity. I'm just curious as to what the logging is all about and why there are so many trees being taken down in the back pasture?
any updates on how the auction went?
ANYTHING ABOUT THE AUCTION YET?? :) CAN'T WAIT,,,,
I wanted to mention,,,,,,it would be nice to get together again next year,,,(after Home Day maybe),,,and just Remember Bert,,,Talk about the Progress of the Farm,,,,...(something like the event at the Southwick School,,,,because ,,in a lot of ways,,,,We that loved him, were His Family :)
Even the Girl Scouts miss the Eggman.
I really miss Bert, his brother, sister, and father whom I knew and worked for in the sixties. the family opened their doors to everyone. , and when there long enough, they invited you for dinner or supper. The family was Northfield where he was born and died. having never eaten in a restaurant and asked for nothing. But really wound up with volunteers coming to help
Please,,,,where is the Park Street Cemetary???? thank you
Linda
Are they selling any of the items from the farm?
