Here are three facts about heartworms...
1. Heartworms can live for 5 to 7 years in dogs and 2 to 3 years in cats.

2. Symptoms of heartworm disease in dogs can include coughing, fatigue, decreased appetite, and weight loss. For cats, heartworm disease symptoms can include coughing, periodic vomiting, lack of appetite and weight loss.

3. "The American Heartworm Society recommends that you “think 12:” (1) get your pet tested every 12 months for heartworm and (2) give your pet heartworm preventive 12 months a year."
