It was 20 degrees and lightly snowing when we moved our small herd of cow/calf pairs on New Years Day. It ended up taking 5 hours until they were all moved and the last cow was rescued from a ditch where she was stuck. The pictures have captions.
Family participants were: Gabe, Aurora, Doc, Claire, Adeline, Thaddeus, Antonia and Jacob on horseback.
Paula, Ethan and Clarissa helping to block the roads and stop traffic with vehicles.
Irene, Little Jeff, Antonia and Jacob with exhausted calf rescue.
Finally, Thaddeus, Gabe and Doc had to pull a cow out of a muddy ditch with the tractor, ropes and a trailer. They finished in the dark.

Jeff's father passed away on Friday. He was 101! His great grandmother named the ranch.

Hardcore Carnivore host Jess Pryles, a live fire cook and TV personality (who specializes in all things meat) was at the ranch on July 30-31st filming an episode for next season. The TV show airs on the Outdoor channel. She rode in a cattle drive, learned some roping skills, sought out Clarissa Guevarra-Menn's expertise regarding garlic and cooked an amazing steak entree with a garlic sauce for us.

The Saturday morning task was moving the cow-calf pairs to new grass. They've been on the creek flats for the past week. We desperately need more rain. Paula took the video and helped to stop traffic for the road crossing on Cty Hwy T. It was a successful crossing!

The Ranch’s History

Jeff "Doc" Menn is a descendant of German immigrants who first settled in the valley south of the Village of Norwalk in the 1850's. His great-great grandma named the Ranch when she got lost on the Ranch while bringing home the cows for milking. When rescued, she exclaimed, in German, that it was a terrible "Devil's Hollow" out there. The name obviously stuck! In more recent years, the Ranch was run by Docs grandparents, Ben and Tony Menn, followed by his parents, Jake and Katherine Menn (Big Jake and Mama Kitty). Doc and Paula Menn took over the Ranch. Thanks to Jake, Katherine, Doc, and Paula, the Ranch has grown significantly, in terms of land and livestock. In 2012, Doc and Paula partnered with their son-in-law and daughter, Gabriel and Aurora Slattery, which included Gabriel and Aurora taking full responsibilty of the Ranch's daily operations.
