Safehaven Small Breed Rescue

Safehaven Small Breed Rescue We are a 501c3, not for profit, no kill rescue specializing in senior dogs and those born with defects, providing veterinary care - socialization
(137)

We DO NOT SHIP dogs. All dogs being adopted must be pickep up by the person adopting them. We DO NOT allow dogs to be adopted as gifts for someone other than the adopter. Occasionally you may see a post stating that we have reached our limit temporarily - This means that we are currently housing 16 rescue dogs. This is our personal limit, the number we can comfortably care for, feed and keep groom

ed without stretching ourselves too thin. However, we will make exceptions for true emergencies such as an injured or abuse cases which are usually referred to us by the local or State Police. Since we refuse to put elderly, handicapped, puppy mill dogs, or abused dogs on a concrete floor, in individual fenced runs, we can only house 25 dogs per year. We believe that it is better to make the worst case dogs feel like they really are home, than to take in many dogs only to have them put in a kennel run, isolated and in most cases, in the same situation they were rescued from. Our operating budget usually consists of what ever is left of our personal income after the bills are paid. We attend several craft shows and other fundraisers a year, all of which directly benefit the dogs at Safehaven. At no time do we use donated funds to pay the bills, or for "administrative fees" as other rescues and shelters do. Your donations go to buy the best dog food we can afford, new toys, treats, flea products, heartworm preventative medications, occasionally beds, and snuggle blankets and sweaters for the elderly dogs for winter. You can be assured, that your donation is NOT going into someone's pocket (unless maybe Petsmart's) We receive no state or federal funding for our rescue work. Our Location is Norway SC, phone - 814-428-2247
Our Tax ID is 27-2053787

For years, Giving Tuesday has been a major focus of fundraising for nonprofits. This year, we are asking for supplies. Primarily food and puppy pads. Our stock is getting low and these old kids continue to want their breakfast and dinner every day LOL So instead of waiting until Dec 3, I am posting our wish lists now. As always I appreciate any and all help keeping these old ones fed and happy. Thank you in advance for always having our backs

We had a fantastic day yesterday at the Bamberg Holiday Market. Almost sold out of treats! I had the opportunity to meet some wonderful people, many animal lovers, and made a lot of friends. We will definitely be going back next year. So this wraps up our event schedule for 2024. Its been so nice to get out in the public again and speak to people about the importance of Hospice work for dogs. Here's to a great 2025 season!

Our calendar for 2025 already has the first event scheduled for March 2025! Gotta keep busy and keep Safehaven in the public eye.

Please just don't
Every year the rawhides come out and people who don't understand, buy them for their beloved dogs.
Just don't.

We strive to provide the best for our furry friends, but sometimes what seems like a harmless treat can hide potential dangers. There have been documented cases of dogs with pieces of rawhide lodged in their windpipe, stomach, or intestines, creating choking hazards and an intestinal blockage, gastrointestinal distress, such as vomiting or diarrhea, can occur if rawhide irritates the digestive tract . Since rawhide is a byproduct of leather, some items pose a significant challenge to a dog’s digestive system when it comes to breaking down.

During the manufacturing process, rawhide is often soaked in a cocktail of chemicals to preserve it and enhance its flavor. These chemicals can include formaldehyde or chromium salts, hydrogen peroxide and bleach, which may pose risks to adult dogs and young puppies alike.

Safer alternatives like completely digestible Himalayan yak chews, dehydrated sweet potato chews, or any of the all meat jerky treats would be much better than rawhide.

Dia de los Mu***os,
The Day of the Dead for pets is typically celebrated on November 1st, which is known as Dia de los Inocentes (Day of the Innocents). This day is dedicated to honoring deceased children and infants, as well as beloved pets who have crossed the rainbow bridge.
Since the conception of Safehaven in 2008, hundreds of dogs have been through the rescue, some however were unable to be adopted and stayed for the rest of their lives. They became family, beloved and cared for. Today I honor those souls that touched my heart and moved on, who I hope will greet me at the bridge.

We had a great afternoon yesterday at Bishop's at the Mill in Swansea. We made some new rescue connections, talked to many great animal lovers and even made some money with treat and calendar sales. Calvin was there, of course. We met Abraham the Camel, and even won the pet costume contest. What a great afternoon!

Way back in 2009, I took in an old Chihuahua from a mill who turned out to be pregnant. This sweet old girl ended up having a C-section but was the best mom. She had 2 of the sweetest babies who went on to be adopted into wonderful homes. I just found out today that the little boy puppy Lobo aka Bailey passed at 15 years old. His people truly loved that boy and gave him a fantastic long life. God speed Bailey.

We are having our first really cold day since February and little Miss Meemaw is NOT happy about it. She is only 4 pounds so she does get cold easily. Unfortunately, the only tiny clothes I could find in a hurry tonight were Pedro's. I don't think she minds wearing his hoodie since it is keeping her warm.
She isn't the only one dressed tonight. Louie and Beanie both have their fleece PJs on and blankets at the ready. I am so not ready for this colder weather.

You all know Safehaven doesn't do cats. BUT since it seems like this guy will be living with me now, I thought I would introduce you.
On Tuesday evening, I went to the local store for milk. As I pulled in to the parking lot, I saw a tiny black kitten running around in front of the doors. I got out and the little bu**er ran to me crying. Well you know where this is going. I didn't get the milk and brought him home. He was extremely dehydrated and starving. And had the most horrible head shake to the point where he couldn't drink no matter how much he wanted to.
He has been getting fluids with a syringe and miracle ni**le which he handles really well. He is eating on his own, canned kitten food with added water. So today he went to the vet.
Looks like I have another house cat.
I named him Erik, its a Norse Viking name (since he was found in Norway lol) meaning Forever Strong.
He has fleas (no surprise), a few ear mites but not enough to cause the head shaking, worms (he got dewormer). No fever, no coccidia, no respiratory issues. The vet feels 98% that this is CH (Cerebellar Hypoplasia) same as Pedro. He will be in quarantine for another 8 days just to make sure no other symptoms develop but we aren't expecting anything. I got a sample of 1 drop of Revolution which will get rid of the fleas and mites. He will most likely always need help drinking, but otherwise should be a normal cat with a head shake. He goes back in 3 weeks for his first shots

Good Morning! I have a few updates for you all.
First I wanted to let you know that the girls from Latrobe PA are in their new home. A dear friend and rescuer from PA stepped up for them and Pixie and Peanut have been with her. Both are doing well. Sadly Honey passed away at the shelter from liver failure.

Secondly, I want to introduce Louie. He is the newest resident at SSBR, arrived yesterday morning. He is an amazing little man. Typical of the crested breed, he is very affectionate, sensitive, and gets along great with other dogs. The reason he was not quarantined is that he was never in a shelter or exposed to other dogs. All vaccines are up to date as well as heartworm preventative. Louie was very loved by his previous owner.

Good Morning. We had a great but exhausting day yesterday. Calvin brought much attention to our booth (as usual lol) And we even sold a few calendars. Here are a few Calvin pics from the event. Turnout was pretty good considering most people in that area are still without power today. The clean up begins around here this morning. Many branches down, some pretty big. But no damage to the fences or buildings. We were lucky, many others were not.

Hey everyone! Just wanted to say that other than a few large branches (and hundreds of little ones) in the yards, and the power being out for a while, we made it through without any major damage. Tomorrow is our event in Pelion SC, so any major clean up around here will have to wait until Sunday. I will have Mann, my lawn guy come over and help get all these big branches cut up and out of the yards. Then we can be ready for the next one LOL. Hope everyone is safe and has a good weekend.

Just wanted to jump on here and let you all know that so far, we are good. We got about 6 inches of rain so far with more to come this evening and overnight. The wind will be bad after midnight so I plan on sleeping light (If I sleep at all) and keep an eye on things. Lots of roads around us have flooded and are impassable. There have also been tornadoes in neighboring counties but nothing here. Just wanted you to know we are all still alive and well. Will post after the winds die down.

We got it done ahead of the Hurricane! The yard is now separated into two areas. The littles have their own spot and the big kids can still run and play! It was a lot of work but we did it! Now to just sit back and hope this storm isnt too bad.

Safehaven is not a kennel. The rescues live with us in our home. We do not have “open” hours. All visitation is by appointment only.
