Summer and fall are the peak time for arbovirus infection as these diseases (which include Eastern Equine Encephalitis [EEE], West Nile Virus [WNV], Western Equine Encephalitis [WEE] and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis [VEE]) are transmitted by several different species of mosquitoes and biting insects.

With more states reporting cases of West Nile Virus (28 cases have been reported in August as of today), this is your reminder to keep your horses up to date on vaccinations with the guidance of your veterinarian to best protect your equine friends from infection.

Learn more about West Nile Virus and find downloadable resources on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website at: https://www.equinediseasecc.org/west-nile-virus

With EEE in the news, this is a reminder to have your horses vaccinated this year if you haven't done so already. If your horses were vaccinated prior to May 1, 2024 it is advisable to booster them for EEE this fall. Young horses or horses with unknown vaccination histories are most at risk. As far as aerial spraying, it is advisable to keep your livestock in barns the nights they spray and cover outdoor water tubs. As always, please reach out to Dr. Pantano if you have any questions!

Update: Bear has attacked another goat in Kingston today 8/25. Additional recommendations are putting aluminum foil slathered in grape jelly on the electric fence strand so the bear sniffs or licks it and gets zapped. Make your livestock safe!

Posting with permission of the owner. Just a reminder that bears are alive and well here on the South Shore in Massachusetts. While there are many websites with suggestions on how to peacefully live with them, the number one thing you can do to protect your livestock is put up electric fence wire around goat, sheep, pig and alpaca pens. Also a good way to protect your coops and bee hives. This goat was lucky today. A bear climbed into the goat pen and attempted to drag him out by the neck. Luckily the owners heard him screaming and were able to scare the bear off. I expect him to make a full recovery, but he'll be pretty sore tonight.
