This is the man that developed & taught me everything I know about Cold Laser & Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation, allowing me to help countless patients maintain their strength, comfort & dignity over the past two decades. Many of you were able to help extend the lives of your pets far beyond your expectations thanks to this man! Many of you also have pets that will benefit from his work in the future.

Thank you, Dr Bill Inman, for the extra time you helped me give my boys, Lucas, Jordyn, Kamdyn & (currently) Kaydyn & the hundreds of other pets your teachings have allowed me to treat.

If you are as grateful to Dr. Bill as I am, please consider making a donation to help him & his family as he battles this deadly disease.

To know "Dr. Bill" is to love and respect him. He has paid it forward on many occa… Malinda (Lala) Morrison needs your support for Help Dr. Bill Fight Cancer

It's officially time to share this poem I wrote back around 2000. Watch out folks... it's a really bad year! Yes, it's here... "The Foxtail Time of Year"!

In California, how can you tell,
When summer time's finally here?
Spend a day at Dogtor Calls,
And the answer's suddenly clear.

The first to arrive is Mr. Brown,
He says "I'm dropping Rover off,
We walked on Mt. Burdell last night,
Ever since, he's had a cough."

Then Mrs. Jones brings in Miss Boots,
"Something's wrong, I don't know what,
She was fine when I let her out at dawn,
Now her little eye is swollen shut."

Promptly at 9:00, the Johnsons walk in,
Poor Goldie's not feeling quite right,
She walked Deer Island yesterday,
Then she sneezed for half the night.

Next through the door is Buddy the Lab,
Happily dragging Mr. Shaw,
They walk a lot in open space,
Now Buddy's favoring a paw.

No surprise when the telephone rings,
Ms. Taylor's at the park with Red,
He fetched his ball in the tall grass,
And came back shaking his head.

With otoscope and alligators,
Anesthesia & tender care,
The doc & staff at Dogtor Calls,
Set about to make repairs.

A grass blade's found in Rover's throat,
From Goldie's nose a foxtail's pulled,
Red's got foxtails in both his ears,
From the tall grass in which he rolled.

An oat seed's found in Miss Boot's eye,
Buddy's paw is prepped & explored,
A foxtail's pulled from the draining tract,
And in his ears we found two more.

It's summer time, if you're still in doubt,
To us it's perfectly clear,
In California, the summer time,
Is the Foxtail Time of Year.

Merry Christmas to our Dogtor Calls patients, friends & families from Dogtor Calls staff & mascots! Took us forever to get Tartyn to quit staring at that weird thing on Mom's head. Masks have become the norm, but he'd never seen me in antlers!

Thanks to client/friend/Team Mom, Carol Turrini for setting this up & taking the photo.

Not pictured: Lisa & Maci - they both had the day off.

From a beloved friend & client who gets me. Do you know how your vet feels as your heart is breaking?

For Dr. Kelley McNair❤ Because I know this holds true at this moment. Bambi is still with us but there is going to be a tough day in the future for sure. Love you Kelley😘 (I already cried reading it so your turn🤣) that's what you get for calling me old.

How your vet sees euthanasia.....

So, you bring me this puppy - she kisses my face, devours the cookies I offer, and our friendship starts.

Several visits later, he starts to learn where all the cookie jars are in the clinic, and that lady in the white coat, well she’s okay....

Fast forward many visits later, now I am in love with your dog and your whole family because, well, you are just really really good people and I have not only watched that pup turn into a really sweet family member, but I got to watch the kids grow every year and be a very small part of your journey.

Remember that time she ate your teenage daughter’s thong underwear? 😝😝😝 yeah we all had a good laugh over that once surgery was done and she was recovered. Your daughter probably never forgave me for bagging that up and showing the whole fam-jam when they came to pick her up from the clinic.

So many adventures, so little time.....

And here we are, fifteen or so odd years later, having to say goodbye.

He’s got heart disease and I can’t fix it anymore. She’s got cancer and there is no cure. He has arthritis and the meds just aren’t working. I want her to live forever for you. I want that so badly it hurts. I feel like I have failed him and you when I have run out of options to keep them, and you, comfortable and happy.

So now it’s time, and I am supposed to be professional. Objective. I am the doctor. Calm. Cool. Collected. Always under control.

F~*k that.

I have known you and her for a third of my life, and most of my professional career.

But I keep it together. My superhuman amazing technicians have put the catheter in. My support staff from reception to assistants have done all the paperwork. Trust me they may not show it but their hearts are breaking for you. They have been there. They know. And they know you and care about you too.

And I have the needle in the pocket of my white coat. The same pocket that was always full of treats for him. I take a deep yoga breath and come into the room. Gotta stay strong now.......

She’s giving me that sweet look she always does, the one that is followed by puppy kisses and a glance at the cookie jar. But she is too weak now. She is ready. You are not. I am not. But this s**t has to happen because we love her too much to let her suffer.

She would keep going as long as we asked her too. But we can’t ask her to anymore. It’s not fair to her. I wish our human hearts could be so giving all the time. I wish I could be the person my dog thinks I am. I wish I wish i wish I could find a way for them to live forever. But I don’t have those magical powers. I am just a vet.

So we kiss him back, not much left of his body that still works, but that old tail wags, just enough that I lose my s**t on the inside but I try not to cry. Gotta stay strong.

Her body relaxes, she is in your arms and your are sobbing. Another family has lost one of its most cherished members. I put my stethoscope to her heart to make sure it has stopped but she is held so tight to your chest that maybe that is your heart I hear pounding or maybe it’s mine and all the blood rushing through my ears as I try so so so hard not to turn into a blubbering mess.

Confirmed, he has passed. You lay him gently on the table and we hug tightly as you go to leave.

The door closes behind you and I don’t know if you hear this, but I sob hysterically into your pets ear. She is gone, he will be missed, and you have to face what I know will be one of the hardest parts of today.

Entering that house and they are not there to greet you.

Please know that I know how you feel. As you leave the clinic I just wish with every fibre of my being that you never had to face that. I wish they could live forever.

And please know, I am so grateful that I was a small part of your journey.

Love always, Your vet.

FROM SUZANNE BRIA:

The plans for our memorial "ad" for Kelley McNair's Kamdyn to appear in the Golden Retriever News magazine is coming along well. We are hoping to get it into the next issue which will be devoted to performance dogs. We have had donations from her friends but of course hope for more and don't want anyone who loves Kelley to miss out on participating!

Below is the original post with info on how to donate. Some of Kelly's friends I'm sure are not on FB so I have made this public to share and also feel free to copy and paste the text and send it via email to anyone you think might be interested. Kelley and Kam had quite a fan club! And deservedly so. Many thanks in advance!

**As many of you know, our beloved friend Kelley McNair DVM had to let her precious Kamdyn go after a very good year since being diagnosed and treated for cancer. Sadly, in April Kelley found untreatable metastasis to his lungs, and after lots of goodbyes with Kam's many fans, Kelley gently let him go.

Kamdyn was one of a litter of 7 bred by Connie Tuft with her girl Jazz and my boy Finnegan. I was honored to be there when Kam was born and when he left us, and in between he had a spectacular agility career and many wonderful adventures being with Kelley every day for more than 10 years. Kam made friends wherever he went with his joy and perfect Golden temperament – Kelley generously sharing him with us all.

Kam is officially MACH4 Jecon's Kruizin' Kamdyn MXS2 MJC2 PJD MXP2 MXPB MJP3 MJPB FTC1 MFG2 TQX MFPB T2B10 TKI ADHF.

With Kelley's permission, I invite their many friends to honor Kam by funding a memorial in the GR News with excess money raised going to the Golden Retriever Foundation to be used for canine cancer research.

Please send a donation of any amount with check made payable to me as follows:

Many thanks! 💖

The best big brother ever! He helped me to become the person I am today. Now it's my turn to help him.

On December 17, 2018, Billy McNair was diagnosed with aggressive Stage 4 cancer -poorly differentiated metastatic adenocarcinoma. We have been told that his time to share his life with us is limited to weeks or, at most, just a few months. His personal goal is to make it to his daughter, Kelse...

This is the sweetest farewell letter I've every received! It made me laugh & it made me cry - sometimes both at the same time...

This is from my dear little Hallie Bear, a 19 year old Pom/Terrier/??? cross who lived for an amazing 19 years. (The letter was actually typed by Hallie's mom after she passed, but the message is most definitely from Hallie!).

I cared for Hallie for her entire life, which was almost as long as my entire veterinary career so far. I hope you can read her sweet, sweet letter posted in this format.

CAYENNE IS MISSING!

♡♡♡♡♡UPDATE: FOUND moments ago after 48 hours wandering in & out of the local creek & neighbors yards! In Mama's arms, eating & drinking! Thanks to all who kept her in your prayers.♡♡♡♡♡

If you or anyone you know lives near Wild Horse Valley, please keep an eye out for Cayenne, a VERY senior Border Terrier. She is very fragile & has a seizure disorder. She was in her driveway with her mom last night, but while Mom was getting her young dog out of the car, Cayenne literally just disappeared. One moment she was there, the next, she was gone. She's a creaky old lady dog, so we know she didn't just run off - she doesn't move that fast!

We are hoping that a neighbor may have seen Cayenne at the bottom of the driveway & taken her home, not realizing her mom was just up the driveway a little way with the other dog.

Mom is beside herself with worry & we're praying a person took Cayenne & not a coyote or a Bobcat. Please help spread the word, so we can bring this girl home!

Dear Pet Parent:

Dog flu is on the rise nationwide and recently there have been more than 50 confirmed cases in Northern California.

Canine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease that is caused by canine influenza virus (CIV) Type A. There are 2 known strains in the United States: H3N8 and H3N2. Most unvaccinated dogs are susceptible to infection by both viruses. Any dog can be at risk for canine influenza regardless of age, s*x or breed. However, dogs that visit doggie day cares, boarding kennels, groomers, and dog parks, or attend dog events are at more risk.

Canine influenza spreads the same way as the common cold in humans. Canine influenza viruses are most commonly spread through direct dog contact (sniffing, licking, nuzzling); through the air (coughing and sneezing); via contaminated surfaces (sharing water bowls or toys); or through contaminated humans (with viruses on their hands or clothing). The more your dog socializes with other dogs, the higher the risk of contracting canine influenza and other infectious respiratory diseases.

Most cases of canine influenza are mild. However, up to 20% of infected dogs will have moderate to severe illness. Clinical signs may include:
*Coughing and retching
*Sneezing
*Nasal and/or ocular discharge
*Decreased appetite
*Lethargy
*Fever

We recommend that all dogs who are at high risk of exposure be vaccinated for canine influenza. Please contact our office at (415)755-3498 if you think your pet may be exhibiting symptoms of influenza or if you would like to discuss whether your dog should receive the influenza vaccine.

Meet Lizzie, a 4 year old Terrier mix who's chosen to defy the odds.

On October 31st, while Lizzie's mom was preparing to go out, she heard a yelp from the next room & rushed to see what had happened. She found Lizzie looking worried & a bit stiff, but could not determine what had happened. Lizzie walked across the room without a limp, so Mom decided to let Lizzie rest at home while she went out & see how she was doing that evening.

When Mom returned home, Lizzie failed to greet her at the door. She found Lizzie lying on her bed, unable to get up. Lizzie was rushed to emergency, where she was tentatively diagnosed with one or more herniated discs. She was completely paralyzed in the back end & barely able to move her head or front legs. Lizzie was then referred to a veterinary neurologist & Mom was quoted $10,000 for an MRI & emergency surgery.

This is where it gets complicated... disc injuries are not straight forward - some improve with surgery, some don't; some improve without surgery, some don't. One's first inclination might be to wait & see if the pet improves without surgery, but unfortunately, the longer we wait to perform surgery, the less likely a successful outcome becomes. Your second thought might be to take out a 2nd mortgage on the house & proceed to surgery, cost be damned, anything to fix your pup. The problem with this is that there is no guarantee, even with surgery, that your pup will ever walk again. So what would you do?

Lizzie's mom had to answer that question. She absolutely could not afford the surgery that MIGHT allow Lizzie to walk again, but she wasn't ready to give up on her happy-go-lucky, loving little friend. She declined both the surgery & the humane euthanasia that the doctors suggested.

That's when we met this amazing little angel who refuses to give up. When we first met her, Lizzie was unable to stand & was painful in her neck & back, but she had a sparkle in her eyes. We all decided that as long as Lizzie wanted to fight, we wouldn't give up either. Since then, Lizzie's condition has been managed with an anti-inflammatory, pain medications, VOM, Cold Laser & the love & devotion of her dedicated mom.

Within a few days, Lizzie's pain was reduced, she could support herself on her forelimbs & was beginning to move her hind legs & tail. The next week she was able to stand with her weight on her left hind leg if we helped her balance. A few days later, she was using her front legs to move herself about & when we placed her in a standing position for her laser treatment, she held herself up for almost 2 minutes. No one wanted to get their hopes up, but Lizzie's determination was contagious.

The following Friday, Lizzie arrived for her treatment while we were finishing with another patient, so we didn't actually see her approaching the coach. Since Mom typically carried Lizzie to the door & then set her down while she waited to be invited in, we weren't surprised to see her sitting there as the other pet left. Alyssa went out to tell Mom we were ready for Lizzie & then turned to walk away, only to stop short as what she had just seen began to register in her brain... & then she hollered, "Dr. Kelley! Lizzie's walking!"

Yes, it's true, there's still a little wobble in her step, but Lizzie is walking again. No question about what her mom was thankful for this Thanksgiving! Lizzie's going to continue to receive her anti-inflammatory & VOM & Cold Laser treatments, & she's still on strict rest, but in time, our little friend may be running to greet Mom at the door again. Please send some positive thoughts her way.

Please keep an eye out for Ted. His family wasn't able to get him in time and unfortunately had to flee without him. He is a 3 yr old red/orange tabby. The owner described him as having a very distinct tail with a kink or a curl. He was last seen in Markwest Springs in a long development at Linda Lane. Please share and if you have seen him please let us know🐾

All dog owners need to be aware of a recent increase in the incidence of a potentially deadly disease known as Leptospirosis. This organism is typically contracted through contact with urine from infected animals (especially rodents) or with contaminated water (usually stagnant water in isolated ponds or puddles) & the disease is normally only very rarely diagnosed in Marin & Sonoma counties. The last significant outbreak of the disease in our area was over 15 years ago & was thought to be associated with exposure to a specific pond in Novato's Open Space.

It is thought that all the recent rain may be a factor in the recent increase in the number of Lepto cases - perhaps washing water from isolated, contaminated sources down to more public, populated areas or maybe forcing large populations of rodents to move closer to environments where our dogs spend time.

This is a very serious disease & it can be transmitted to other dogs & to people through the urine of infected animals. If the disease is not diagnosed & treated early, it can progress rapidly & often results in death.

Due to the (normally) low incidence of Leptospirosis in our area & the potentially serious reactions in some dogs receiving the Lepto vaccine, I have not been recommending this vaccine for the majority of my patients. I base my vaccine recommendations on what we refer to as "risk/benefit analysis". Since the risk of the disease was low & the risk of vaccine reactions was high (& because I believe in minimizing vaccinations in general) I have rarely encouraged vaccinating against Leptospirosis in the past ten years. Unfortunately, current circumstances are forcing me to amend my recommendations.

We are asking that owners of our canine patients contact us as soon as possible to discuss the specific risk/benefit for your pet & determine if vaccinating against Leptospirosis is indicated. Your pet's "life style", general health, age, size & potential exposure to contaminated environments are factors that will be considered in this decision.

The earliest signs of the disease include fever, lethargy, loss of appetite & enlarged lymph nodes. If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, contact us immediately. Early diagnosis & treatment is essential & may save your dog's life.

Pass this on to your fellow Dogtor Calls clients who may not see this on Facebook. We need to get the word out!

As some of you know, I played hookie from work on Monday, October 3rd, to compete with my awesome guy, Kamdyn, at the Golden Retriever Club of America's National Specialty Agility Trial. I felt a little guilty, but don't regret it, especially since Kam had an amazing day & won the GRCA Excellence In Agility trophy, for being the highest scoring GRCA dog in the trial...out of the more than 300 Goldens participating. I'm such a proud mama. Among the 300 plus Goldens present were 9 of Kamdyn's half-siblings. We got a great family portrait with those from his Papa Finn's side.

Dogtor Calls

08/12/2016

Dear Furry Friends,

Please stay out of trouble for the next week! I will be on vacation next week (yes, I am really going to take a vacation - for an entire week!) & I need to know that you will remain safe & healthy until I return. Don't eat anything inappropriate, don't injure yourself doing something silly, don't get in a tussle with your housemate & definitely stay away from those foxtails.

Don't worry. If you find it impossible to follow these instructions, Mom or Dad can call Dogtor Calls and talk to one of the ladies who will be able to advise them as to how to handle the trouble you've gotten into & will refer you to the right place if you need to be seen right away. The ladies will also be available to refill your prescriptions & schedule appointments for when I return.

Please be good boys & girls & don't make me regret taking this little break.

Love you all & see you soon,

Dr. Kelley

The Shine On Project: Full Information

An early detection method for the diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma could be life changing! Wouldn't it be amazing if we had a reliable test to determine if our beloved dogs were at risk for this disease BEFORE they presented with detectable tumors, at which point the course of the disease is set & will inevitably take their lives.

I lost my beloved Jordyn to this disease just 8 months after an "unremarkable" ultrasound, showing no evidence of disease. He was acting a bit off one day; the next day he refused breakfast & looked pale - he was bleeding from multiple tumors on his spleen & in crisis. He had an emergency splenectomy, but multiple tumors were identified elsewhere in his abdomen. He had a fabulous 5 weeks after surgery, full of love, hugs, friends & fun, before a tumor on his heart began to bleed. I will never regret putting Jordy through that surgery & enjoying those next 5 weeks, but I would have given anything to have been able to detect the disease early enough to actually do something about it.

I live in constant fear of hemangiosarcoma taking another of my Golden boys, but feel helpless to prevent it should it decide to rear it's ugly head. This study gives me hope - maybe they will identify the marker for this disease & enable me to screen my boys & other at risk dogs before it takes it's hold, & maybe (I pray) they will develop a treatment for dogs who test positive on the screening test that will actually be able to stop the disease before it ever affects our kids! Talk about peace of mind!

It's been a tough week at Dogtor Calls, saying goodbye to some very special friends... Safe travels Jet, Malcolm, Bailey & Lily. You've got me thinking about my Golden boys, Samson, Luke & Jordy, waiting for you on the other side. Tell them I miss them & love them as much today as I did the day they left!

This is a photo of my precious Lucas on his final day with me, just a month before his 13th birthday. He fought Osteosarcoma for an incredible 13 months & never once complained or let it dampen his spirit. Here's his eulogy...

Samson's Golden Lucas
June 8, 1989 - May 10, 2002

Remember that day, so long ago,
When you sat upon my feet,
And we fell in love in the time it took,
For our eyes to silently meet?

I reached down to pat your head,
And stroke your long red ears,
You looked at me with that silly grin,
And lapped away my tears.

For a week we called you puppy,
While we sought the perfect name,
Then you heard the title "Lucas",
And howled to stake your claim.

You learned of rain & snow & mud,
And explored the mighty lakes,
Thinking driftwood was solid land,
Was one of your first mistakes.

We found you loved most everything,
Just living brought you joy,
Happiness was getting a belly scratch,
Or chewing a favorite toy.

Then cancer reared it's ugly head,
For months you tried & tried,
You fought with all your Golden heart,
And kissed me while I cried.

And in those final moments,
As I held you in the sun,
Your eyes said, "Thanks, I love you,
And it's been a lot of fun.

Don't worry that I'm leaving,
For though the pain's to great to bear,
I'm headed for a better place,
And I'll be waiting for you there."

Strange coincidence, if you note the dates of Luke's life... his successor, Jordyn was born on May 10, 2002 & passed on June 8, 2012...
