Muffin tins are perfect for enrichment. First we froze cut up chicken in water, then we just used ice cubes. There are all kinds of things you can freeze to make your dog his or her own lick tin. We used big enough pieces of meat to prevent choking. Always supervise this kind of enrichment.

Training Tip Tuesday: JUST REWARD YOUR DOG.

I know I'm probably preaching to the choir, and most people who follow my page are likely already doing this, but I know some of you will share this, and I want to hammer home this point: YOU CANNOT OVER REWARD GOOD BEHAVIOR. You just can't. You won't spoil your dog. You won't teach your dog to 'manipulate' you for food. You WILL see more of the behavior you like, though! And isn't that the point of training?

The NUMBER ONE thing that I do that increases engagement and compliance with my canine students is that I reinforce far more often than a non-trainer might. Sometimes in class my students will get frustrated because their dog responds better to me then them with all of the distractions, but the reason that that happens is that I am consistently generous with the dog and I pay with typically very exciting and novel food reinforcers. (my own novelty is likely also at play here as well, but unfortunately when we live with our dogs our novelty wears of fast, just ask Regis and Phoebe 😂😂😂).

There is no magic, I'm not a "whisperer", I don't have a special 'bond' with dogs, I just pay more often and have better treats! And those are both things you can do just as well!

The 'race to get rid of treats' is in our heads. There is no way to completely fade reinforcement from training (behaviors that are no longer reinforced get extinguished, that's just how it works). And I think sometimes our ego takes over even when we should know better (the dog SHOULD do it, because I said so!) when we've been working at a skill for a while. Don't let these things hold you back! REWARD YOUR DOG!

How does this apply to TRAINING?
• PREVENTION is the first step in behavior modification
To teach a dog to stop jumping up on guests at the front door
• MANAGE the entrance to PREVENT the jumping while you
• PRACTICE how to greet politely.
FIX the environment to set the dog up for success -
Here's one helpful tip to begin....
ENTRY TRAINING WITH YOUR DOG ON A LEASH
1. Put your dog on a leash before guests arrive so your dog is tethered to you. (Just like you would if you were out for a walk)
2. Keep the leash short but loose. (Short enough to prevent jumping on the visitor but long enough so your dog can move a bit and not feel trapped)
3. Remain calm – she might be pulling but stay still - say and do nothing - your first goal is to prevent jumping up.
4. When your dog is NOT jumping, immediately reward & praise. (Scatter treats on the floor if she's overly excited)
5. Repeat, repeat, and repeat.
6. After much practice at this, your visitor can offer the reward.
*What you are doing is CAPTURING the behavior you want, which in the beginning is simply the ABSENCE of JUMPING.
*REWARD for four feet on the floor
What she learns is the polite behavior is more rewarding than jumping :)

This is a good illustration of puppy socialization needs, shared from Good as Gold Training, but I would also add that all of the listed exposure and experience needs to feel *safe* for the puppy. If s/he is nervous, tentative, or fearful the fear should be handled by backing off a little and reintroducing very slowly and with lots of praise, food and patience. Sometimes, for the sake of "socialization", owners push their puppies too far and too fast, and it can backfire. Good socialization requires that we "read" our puppies and help them feel safe as they navigate the sounds, textures, people and animals in their new world.

Get Your Leash On believes that all walks are a two-way street. It takes two to tango; it takes two to walk. You and your dog need to be in agreement about the purpose of the walk. We can train a dog to go for different kinds of 'walks', but as dog companions we have to be willing to provide a little variety.
