Happy September! Our case of the month is “Rosie”, a kitten that presented with a lump on her side. The lump had a small hole at the apex, and something could be seen moving inside! The lump was due to a Cuterebra larvae. Adult Cuterebra are large, bee-like flies that occasionally infect cats and dogs. Eggs are laid on the skin, ingested or inhaled through grooming, and then develop into larvae just below the skin. We were able to sedate this sweet little girl, surgically prep the lump, and remove the larvae. This kitten was put on pain meds and antibiotics and recovered well. If you see any lumps or bumps on outdoor cats and dogs, contact us at the OVC for an appointment today!

Ear Mites
June’s case of the month is a common finding in our feline patients. This kitten came in for her first physical examination, and we noticed scratches behind her ears and a dark, coffee ground-like debris in the ears. Swabs of ears and a microscopic exam revealed ear mites. The video shows these little critters crawling on the microscope slide. GROSS!
Ear mites are tiny external parasites that live and grow in the ears of cats and less commonly dogs. Puppies and kittens are most commonly affected, and the mites are contagious to housemates and littermates. If your pet has been shaking his or her head frequently, scratching at ears, or if you notice any dark debris in the ears, they may be suffering from ear mites!
