Please do not buy. Throw them away if your dog gets one as a gift. Giving rawhide to a dog is never a good idea.

Many of these so called treats end up with the dog “enjoying” some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas. The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China.

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulfide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white “pure” look and remove the rancid smell.

Now comes the pretty festive colors and the glue to form cute shapes. On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde.

If that wasn’t bad enough, they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Okalani was at Chicago Animal Care and Control for over a month when we finally decided to bring her into our rescue. Okalani is just the sweetest girl. Besides being a super cutie, she is so polite and engaging. Okalani takes treats with a gentle mouth even though she is clearly hungry and needs to put on some weight! She might get excited sometimes but then she makes sure to be extra sweet the rest of the time. Her kisses are great, but her lean in for calm cuddles are even better.

Okalani loves other dogs and would thrive with a dog friend to play with and keep her company. Okalani was adopted for a couple of weeks and returned due to it not being a good match. Her previous adopter writes, "Lani is a beautiful soul with so much love to give! She loves snuggles and playtime and being with her people, and sleeping in the sun. She wants to play with ALL the dogs all the time! She does excited bunny hops when playing or meeting dogs because she's having so much fun. She takes treats gently and is very food motivated. She is a smart girl with a big heart, and she is so soft and snuggly. She can run fast and play hard - all day long.

She does a great job of sleeping through the night and is perfectly housebroken. She understands boundaries of rooms and where she is allowed. She will do so well with more training, and has so much potential to be a great family dog with kids and other dogs with more training."
