Did you know that yaks are able to withstand temperatures of -40 degrees F? At this temperature, they have even been seen bathing in lakes and rivers. The yak’s warm coat provides insulation through a thick outer coating of long hair and a dense inner coating of matted, shorter fur that traps heat.

Did you know that alpaca fiber is much warmer and not as itchy as sheep’s wool? It doesn’t have lanolin, which is what makes it hypoallergenic and it’s able to be processed without high temperatures or harsh chemicals. Alpaca fiber is flame resistant and water resistant. It can wick away moisture because it has a unique ability to mimic cotton in the moisture region. Next to mohair, alpaca fiber is the second strongest natural animal fiber.

Southern California breeder of Valais Blacknose Sheep.

In 2019, Rah Rah Ranch had Gotland ewes bred (LAI) using imported 100% Valais semen.

In the spring of 2020, Rah Rah was the first breeder in Southern California to have first-generation Valais (f1 50%). We bred our F1 ewes in 2021, and in 2022, we had 2nd generation (f2 75%) Valais born. Last year in 2023 we bred our F2 Valais and our 3rd generation (f3 88%) Valais.

This past year, we have invested in two Purebred Valais Rams to help advance the breed-up program. This fall, we will be breeding our F3 ewes and will have F4, American Purebred Valais Blacknose!

It has been quite an adventure and learning experience. These sheep are not like any other breeds we have owned. They are very gentle and in your pocket, super easy to work which make them perfect for any large or small scale rancher.

One important physical cue would be standing up on hind legs, ears straight, and nose rapidly twitching.
