It’s March Madness and as the “Sweet 16” wraps up we would be remiss to not highlight this sweet 16 year old girl, Ruby. Ruby is a Vizsla with arthritis affecting the joints in her front right paw. She required a carpal brace to stabilize the joint, prevent progression of the deformity, and promote even weight bearing. Ruby is a young 16 and still loves running in the backyard and going for walks with her family, which she will continue to do through the use of her new device. Way to go Ruby!

Happy New Year from CAOP!

Our January spotlight is Lycan. This gentle giant is a 2 year old Cane Corso who experienced a torn CCL of the back right leg.

His custom CCL brace allows him to go for the walks that he loves, while allowing the injury to heal. It’s not easy to keep a 165 pound dog from doing what he loves! But luckily with his brace he can do those and more, safely.

Meet Iris.

Iris is a big girl with a lot of energy. She tore her CCL in her left hindleg but didn’t want her injury to hold her back from doing the things she loves.

As a conservative option to treat the injury, we fabricated a custom CCL orthosis for Iris. With this brace, she was able to continue going for walks and playing with her family with less pain while the injury healed.

Just a few months later and Iris is on her way to being fully healed. Way to go, Iris!

Meet Twitch!

This friendly, lovable guy was found as a severely matted stray on the streets of Chicago. The condition of his fur was covering extensive damage to his right front leg which ultimately had to be amputated.

Thanks to , 8-year-old Twitch now has the energy and spark of a young pup! We had the pleasure of working with him to create a custom carpal brace to preserve the joints in the remaining front leg from overuse injuries over time.

This handsome, smiley boy has some incredible people on his team, including our friends at and . He deserves the best!

Meet Miel.

Miel is a Bichon Frise who was referred to us by our friend Jeanine at Little Steps, Big Strides Animal Rehabilitation When standing, Miel’s knees would hyperextend bilaterally, creating instability and the risk for future injury.

Miel’s back leg braces help to hold his legs in proper alignment, and move safely throughout the day. We were so happy to work with and help this sweet boy!

Meet Cutter.

Cutter is a two year old golden retriever born with a congenital shortening of the front left paw.

Our goal with his orthosis was to provide a proper lever arm for the left front leg, and to control his paw pad from rolling in on itself during gait. This allows Cutter to go for longer walks, and reduces the risk of an overuse injury to the in tact front right leg.

We first measured cutter as a puppy, swipe to see him all grown up and continuing to rock his brace!

Meet Cleese.

Cleese came to us as a foster dog rescued from Turkey by the “Above and Beyond” rescue. Due to a past injury to his carpal bones, he presented with bilateral angular deformities at his wrists.

We provided Cleese with custom carpal braces in order to hold the joints in the most corrected alignment, prevent progression of the deformities, and hopefully avoid any future surgeries.

Cleese was walking all over the office on day one, and continues to rock his orthoses in his forever home in North Carolina.

Meet Pancho.

Pancho is a 1-year-old mixed-breed pup that came to us from for a custom carpal brace. Pancho was born with an angular deformity of his front right paw and required a custom brace in order to support his wrist and prevent further progression of the deformity. The brace will also help Pancho to avoid long-term medical intervention, such as surgery. A custom carpal brace was made that holds his right paw in his most corrected alignment. It took only a short amount of time before Pancho was off running and exploring with his new brace. Swipe to right to see him styling in his new AFO on Day 1!

Meet Cadbury.

Cadbury is our first feline patient at CAOP. He was referred to us by due to a flexion deformity of the front right carpal. His family was looking for a conservative method of treatment to avoid a fusion surgery. Although he was able to get around, there were concerns about joint pain and integrity over time. We made Cadbury a solid carpal brace to prevent further deformity and provide a slight stretch to the musculature to decrease some of the contracture. Cadbury was very patient with his brace and started using it in our office the same day. And he selected the red, white, and blue soccer pattern so he’s ready for the Olympics! 🐾 🇺🇸 ⚽️

Meet Pancake.

Pancake is an 8-year-old chihuahua who was referred to us from Healing Tails Chicago. She began to have problems with her carpal joints after developing weakness in her back legs. Overtime, her wrists collapsed and it was painful for her to get around the house. We made Pancake bilateral carpal braces to offload some of the pressure on her joints and allow her to get around with improved alignment of her front legs.

Meet Benny.

Benny is a 7 year old Mastiff mix whose owners found him as a stray and adopted him from the south side of Chicago. He has a concaved left front carpal joint, suspected to have resulted from a previous fall. This has led to hypextension of the joint during weight bearing and ambulation. Although Benny is able to walk short distances he requires an AFO in order to go for longer walks. The goal of Benny’s brace is to prevent hyperextension of his front left carpal joint in order to allow him to go for longer walks without pain and prevent further deformity of the paw. Swipe right to check out Benny rocking his brace from day one!

Meet Frankie.

Frankie is a 1 year old Chihuahua who was referred to us from Trio Animal Foundation and Little Steps Big Strides for Pets. Affectionately known to Trio as Bambi, due to his newborn fawn gait, he has a severe congenital spinal cord deformity that has led to weakness in his back legs. Although Frankie has a wheelchair to help him get around, he is learning to walk with his physical therapist. The goal of Frankie’s brace is to accommodate the leg length discrepancy of his hind legs, and provide improved balance and support while walking. Swipe right to check out Frankie’s journey with us so far!

Meet Jackie Brown. Jackie Brown is a stylish 10-year-old pittie mix who injured her front left paw a few months ago. The injury has been slow to heal and is preventing her from going on walks. Jackie Brown's parents reached out to consider a brace while they contemplated surgery. We made a custom device that stabilizes both her paw and wrist which allows her to return to activity while promoting healing. Jackie Brown has returned to the great outdoors this week with her pink brace and fashionable sweaters. Happy walking, JB!

Meet Junior. Junior was born with a dislocated shoulder and an underdeveloped elbow. It has slowly become more contracted due to lack of proper use. It puts a lot of stress on his right shoulder as he hops when he walks, not putting any weight on his left front leg. His new brace helps to accommodate his leg length discrepancy, prevents his contracture from getting worse over time, and allows him to finally use his left leg. Swipe left to check out Junior on his first walk with his new brace.

Meet Reggie. Reggie was 12 years old when he first came to us a year and a half ago with a torn CCL. Despite his age, Reggie was still running all over the place and needed a brace to protect him, allow for healing and prevent a costly surgery. Reggie looks like a rockstar in his tie-dye knee brace and was able to run pain free and keep up with all the younger pups. Reggie has since passed due to other age related complications but he always remains CAOP's OG and poster boy.
