08/16/2019

City of Oak Ridge staff have been getting questions about the provision for veterinary services at the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter. For those who have been asking, here are some important pieces of information:

• The City of Oak Ridge is proud of our no-kill shelter status. Shelter operation plans will continue to revolve around doing everything we can to keep that important designation in place.

• The City has contracted with a licensed veterinarian for consultation, medication, and spay/neuter for over 20 years. The level of service currently provided at the shelter will be sustained through a new arrangement that utilizes scheduled veterinary services in conjunction with outside assistance as needed.

• Dr. Matt Jinks, our current in-house veterinarian, will continue serving Oak Ridge. Details are being contractually finalized now and will be considered on Tuesday, August 20, at the special-called meeting of City Council. This agreement will allow us to increase in-house efficiency, maximize staff time spent providing direct care to animals, and serve our community as a no-kill shelter.

• The resolution to approve a professional services agreement with Dr. Jinks to provide veterinary services at the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter was delayed at the June 10th City Council meeting for consideration at a later date. The updated resolution reflecting the new arrangement will be presented on Tuesday.

• The City of Oak Ridge works consistently with two support groups to encourage adoptions: SARG (Shelter Animal Rescue Group) and FORAS (Friends of Oak Ridge Animal Shelter).

• Dr. Jinks will be on-site two of the five days that the shelter is open to the public. Spay/neuter procedures, health certifications, and other vet services will be completed on those specific days. The veterinarian will also be available for consultation when needed. On days when the vet is not at the shelter, any critical animals will be treated by local vet clinics.

• The plan also includes an additional full-time employee at the animal shelter to increase the amount of hands-on time staffers are able to spend each day with each animal. This addition will further improve the level of service we can provide our animals and their potential new families. Hiring is underway and the new employee will be on board soon.

We hope this clears up information about the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter. If you have additional questions, please direct them to the Oak Ridge Police Department during regular business hours by calling (865) 425-3504. Thanks to the community for its passion for our shelter, its staff, and the animals they help care for and find homes for every day.

Play soft music, secure all doors and windows properly, and keep a toy or treat out to help distract them from the lights and sounds.
