📣✨️ Shoutout to Cotton and His Amazing Progress!

Meet Cotton, a 2-year-old, 25-lb bundle of energy and love who’s making incredible strides in training! Cotton was born deaf, but that hasn’t slowed him down one bit. With the right support and communication, he’s showing just how eager and capable dogs with special needs can be.

We have a special place in our hearts for dogs like Cotton—whether they’re blind, deaf, or physically disabled. These incredible pups require a little extra patience and understanding, but once that bond is built, they thrive and learn in amazing ways.

Cotton is currently being fostered through SARG, and his foster mom has been working tirelessly to give him the tools he needs to succeed. Together, they’ve been building trust and establishing clear communication, and the results have been nothing short of inspiring.

We’re so proud of Cotton and grateful for his foster mom’s dedication. If you’d like to learn more about fostering, adopting, or how to help your own special-needs pup, reach out to us at CircusDogTraining.com!

🚨 Exciting news at Circus Dog Training!

This December, we’re thrilled to begin working with Cotton, a 2.5-year-old deaf pup currently being fostered through SARG. His foster mom is teaming up with us to build a communication system that will help ease his anxiety and boost his confidence as he prepares for his forever home.

Our trainer Quentin has a special passion for working with dogs with disabilities—whether physical, visual, or auditory. Every dog deserves the chance to connect with their humans, build trust, and gain the confidence that comes from clear communication.

Stay tuned as we share updates on Cotton’s progress! 🐾 ..

We had yet another amazing session with Maeve and Arlo this past weekend! For Maeve in particular, she has come SUCH a long way from when we first met, as has her mom. The way they can work together on-leash is unrecognizable from when we started. Even though it takes some time to work Maeve down into "work mode", that time is getting shorter and shorter! She's taking more walks which is helping to curb her destructive tendencies and made it far easier to bring her down from peak excitement. Arlo is always ready to learn, and has been making his parents' lives much easier since he's learned some manners. We brought Circus and Sideshow to act as distractions, and we rewarded them all with a puppy party at the end of the session! ..

On this Veterans Day, we pause to remember not only their sacrifices but the ongoing challenges many veterans face. We’re proud to highlight the incredible work of Smoky Mountain Service Dogs, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to "Enhance the Physical and Psychological Quality of Life for Veterans with Disabilities by Providing Custom-Trained Mobility Assistance Service Dogs". 🐾 We always enjoy seeing Maeve! She is a spirited 2-year-old with a taste for baseboards and the couch. We've been practicing our leash-skills to help make her walks more valuable for her. We want to work her mind alongside her body! This can help to prevent destructive tendencies due to boredom by giving her another outlet to release some energy and tension. We've also set her up with a wood chew which has helped save the baseboards! She and Circus thoroughly enjoyed their socialization work at our most recent visit, and we're looking forward to bringing him again next time!

🐾 Meet Hank and Lily - a bonded pair that are angels in the house but can be a hassle on the leash. Mom and dad love to take these two hiking and the pups simply cannot stand cyclists! We're scheduled for four visits through our Ring Leader package, and we will be helping them and their dog walker to form safer leash habits. The more the merrier! Starting with how to hold the leash, we've practiced control stops and managing proximity, both key to ensuring confident control over your dog while on-leash. After one session, mom and dad had their basic leash handling down! Hank and Lily are quick learners, though it will take a couple more sessions and thorough practice from mom and dad to break old habits. Consistency is key, and training is trying!

Happy HOWL-O-WEEN everyone! We love dressing up for Halloween, as do many of our clients! But whether or not you're dressing up today, it's important to keep your dog safe while we celebrate! (Please share your Halloween costumes in the comments below!)

- Keep your candy stash for yourself! Chocolate can be fatal for your dog if ingested, as can xylitol, a common artificial sweetener found in candies. Even the healthy treats like raisins can be deadly for your pup if consumed.
- Keep an eye out for wrappers! Walk your dog while light outside if possible. Watch for candy wrappers, broken eggs, etc and avoid if possible.
- Keep an eye on your dog when they're dressed up! If you choose to take your dog trick-or-treating tonight, especially if they're in costume, make sure they have regular access to water, check in on them to ensure they aren't overheating, and make sure any costumes allow full range of motion and space to breathe.
- Avoid glow sticks and glow jewelry! The fun glowing liquid inside of these toys can be an irritant if it gets on the skin. Better to be safe than sorry and avoid when it comes to your dog!
- Be mindful of stress on your pups. Whether you have a lot of trick-or-treaters coming to the door, or you're the one going house-to-house, Halloween can be a stressful time for our dogs. Be mindful of their stress and give them opportunities to chew and relax throughout the evening.

With these tips in mind, everyone have a HAPPY HALLOWEEN! 🎃👻..

Circus had a blast at the 50th anniversary event for Oak Ridge Animal Shelter! We love getting to meet folks in the community, and we love to get to show our appreciation for our local animal shelter!
Circus was an adoption from Young Williams who took him in after being hit by a car as a stray. It crushed both of his back legs resulting in several surgeries, but it hasn't slowed him down! While his recovery was long and hard, it gave us the chance to bring such a happy, sweet, and wonderful boy into our life. And we couldn't have done it without the compassion and hard work of our local shelter workers, veterinarians, and foster homes.
To show our support for those folks choosing to adopt from their local shelters, we offer 10% off of our training packages for dogs adopted from ORAS, and we're happy to provide Acclimation Training to help you and your new pup get settled into your life together ❤️

If you're interested in adopting a puppy, dog, kitten, or cat, or even if you'd like to volunteer or sign up as a foster, please give the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter a call at (865)425-3423, or visit in-person at 395 Belgrade Rd, Oak Ridge, TN 37830...

Sideshow is settled in enough to begin e-collar training! He is only on tone as of now, but he's taken to it swimmingly! We went on a rainy walk with him and Circus to our local park to have some off-leash time. Every time he got a little too far, we used the tone to make his collar beep and he immediately turned and bolted straight for us! He won't be introduced to static for a while yet as he's still learning expectations off-leash. While we'd prefer to never use static at all, it is an important function to ensure his safety at any distance and in any situation. Static is only used as a last resort to prevent loss of life, limb, or damage to property or other living things. When used properly and responsibly, e-collar can bring the relationship with your dog to the next level. ..

Meet Rocky! He is a STUNNING lab mix who doesn't quite understand his size. He's already 38lbs at only 5 months! With the spread of those feet, we're definitely looking at an 80-100lbs dog full-grown. With that said, it's super important that we get his behavior managed while he's still small. Since he's so young, he's still exploring his world and figuring out how things work, and that includes how to handle boredom. Rocky has taken to launching himself at his mom, pawing at her, and chewing on furniture in the house when he's bored. This simply won't do! We're looking forward to teaching this well-meaning pup about patience, respect, and emotional regulation. Even from just the hour we worked with him at our consultation, we can tell he is eager to learn and ready to work! We can't wait to see how far you can go, Rocky!..

We had the pleasure of seeing one of our clients again a full year later! He has a new sister that was struggling with potty-training, and we were thrilled at the opportunity to see Wattson again. He's a happy 13-year old dachshund that has settled in incredibly with his family over the past year. If you're looking at adopting a dog, don't forget the seniors! He was adopted at 12-years old and is living his best life. Here's to many more years! ..

Our final session with Brady and his mom! We've been practicing leash-skills and taking walks at nearby parks to test her ability to manage her pup in a variety of situations. For our final session, we went to our local Home Depot to take it to the next level! It was packed with people, there were messes being cleaned up, and he had never been to this store before so it was overall a very new and exciting experience for him. But mom handled him like a champion! Look at his calm demeanor and her understanding of what to do - it's become muscle memory! ..

We've been working with an entire family lately! Arlo, pictured first, is a 6-year-old West Highland Terrier that struggles with pulling on-leash, as well as recall and some demand behavior. Maeve, pictured second, is a year-old pitbull mix with the energy of a toddler on a sugar-rush. She has become a destructive chewer that also struggles with leash-pulling and jumping. After several weeks of work so far, there has been a notable improvement in both pups! Maeve has begun to understand leash communication, and Arlo has discovered that dad has value outside of a comfy lap to sleep on! The humans are doing brilliantly as well. It's always amazing to see how differently people handle their dogs after our sessions, and this is no exception. Their leash handling skills are significantly improved, and you can see it in how well they can manage their dogs' excitement and energy on-leash. Great job, guys! ..
