The Following is a letter Bente wrote.
For me, the best part of this sport is when you meet people who respect and care for the animals and humans they work with, people who make things better than they were before. Honesty, integrity, kindness, care, sportsmanship and hard work, those qualities elevate a person to a level few truly attain.
Billy is one of those people.
There are many who have not met Billy which is why those of us on the west coast are reaching out. We know him as the person we go to in hard times, who we lean on for kindness and words of wisdom when we, or our animals, are in crisis, who listens and helps heal.
I am being way too verbose, but when I crash and burn at Nationals I call crying and Billy props me up, puts me back on my feet. When my dog had torsion, he sprang into action with support both emotionally and factually, getting his vet friend, Dr Lee Koch, to call me and explain what to ask and look for when she was having emergency surgery. When I am feeling frustrated about mechanics or personal issues at a trial, he shares his decades long experiences and makes me see things I otherwise would have missed and makes me a better help at a trial. He is instrumental in keeping the work force on the west coast going to keep the Nationals going out here. We don't fight on for intangibles, we fight on for people like Billy, because of the respect and love we have for him, we cannot, will not, disappoint.
His big heart deserves recognition. His integrity, knowledge, and hard work may be more widely known but he is one of those people who make a difference in people's lives and elevates this sport to some thing beautiful!

Billy in Mississippi ! He finished FC Lilly owned by Kippy Swingle and FC AFC Kylie owned by Sonya Harrigfeld . Lilly had 130 open points , 2 time national finalist , qualified 9 nationals !

From Tammy Zahornacky. I was sitting and thinking about the years I have trained with Billy. We had the odd retriever amongst the sea of black Labradors. But Billy was not a stranger when it came to Goldens. A few of the greats come to mind: FC Vinny, FC Bro, AFC Kirby, FC Lulu, and FC AFC Jester. He just has a knack for each individual dog. The ability to read the dog and know just what to do to help the dog learn. With his help and teaching, we put an FC AFC title on Lacy and and AFC title on Amber. Both girls qualified for the National Amateur Retriever Championship.

I can’t find the words to explain the amount of patience he had teaching me (never owned or trained) how to train my dogs. I know I was a hard student but he was able to convey exactly what I needed to know. He never gave up on me as long as I tried.

Billy began his professional training career at 12 years old when Rex Carr brought him on board. By age 16 Billy was going to school full time, taking care of the kennel, and doing breakout work for Rex.

Billys 60-year career has been guided by two very basic principles.
1. A true love and respect for retrievers.
2. Helping others to achieve their goals of becoming a better trainer, handler, sportsman.

Over the years Billy has mentored many new amateurs who have gone on to become crucial resources within our sport. Under Billys mentorship many amateurs have gone on to organizing local trials, working trials, judging local events, putting on seminars, working national, NRC NARC boards, rules committee, retriever news board, judges corner contributors, as well national judges.

Billy has always been willing to support the local weekend trials in many ways that most are unaware. He does this, behind the scenes, with contribution and support, never looking for recognition.

Billy is extremely enthusiastic about our sport, and he believes the only way to have a good dog is to have a trained dog. He shares not only his time and knowledge but his property and resources with everyone. Billy has always had a unique way of sharing his enthusiasm and passion for retriever training, and once experienced, it is not easily forgotten. He has a huge heart that he wears on his sleeve and is always willing to share his knowledge, time, and property.

Billy is truly a man of character and an example of the true sportsmanship. Please take a few moments and review Billy’s achievements and support him with your vote to the Retriever Hall of Fame.

A LIFETIME OF ACHIEVEMENTS

• Almost 60 years training retrievers.
• During his lifetime Billy worked directly with Rex Carr. While working with Rex, Billy learned and followed his very precise and innovative retriever training program.
• Won the National Open Retriever Championship in 1999 with NFC AFC Croppers Riverwater Black Teal.
• High Point Open and Purina dog in 2010 with FC Adams Acres Water Lilly.
• Qualified many dogs for the US National Retriever Championship over the years as well as Canadian National Retriever Championship

• Coached and mentored many amateur trainers and their dogs to become National Amateur Field Champions, Canadian National Champions, National Finalists, Field Champions, and Amateur Field Champions.
• Supported week-ends trials for several local Retriever Clubs
• Spends numerous hours teaching and supporting young professional trainers how to approach the art of field dog training.
