*New Guinea singing dogs and prey drive*
According to chatgdt, when I ask what breeds of dogs have high prey drive, the response I get is vast and includes working breeds, herding breeds, terriers, sporting breeds and many more.
In other words, high prey drive is an extremely common trait amongst and across all dogs, and it doesn’t define any of them.
A training philosophy to always remember is really simple.“Behavior that is reinforced will be repeated”.
A strong and reliable (and often repeated) history with same cue words paired with constant reinforcement can offset prey drive.
In this video there are also other dogs. a German shepherd, a bull breed, and a chihuahua. Kodi the singer isn’t any more serious in his prey response than the herding dog, or the terriers.
Does kodi want the squirrel? Of course, they all do!! But honestly, with solid basic foundational training and keywords like “ok, come on, let’s go!” his prey drive really isn’t all that serious.
Learning history and training matters, and prey drive can be a super common thing in all dogs!
Good job Kodi, right inside the door that disengagement response deserves all the cookies
