Alice Waters: The Fate of Our Nation Rests On School Lunches

A great message from a great local hero

It was the French Philosopher Brillat-Savarin who wrote "the destiny of nations depends on how they nourish themselves." And it is this, his most famous idea, that is now never far from my mind when it comes to the discussion of school lunch in this country.

Want to Change the Food System? Here’s Where to Start

One of our awesome volunteers would like to post this volunteer opportunity:
The Oakland Catholic Worker (OCW) is seeking volunteer instructors and class assistants for our ESL program, beginning now!
OCW offers ESL classes Monday-Thursday evenings, from 6:30-8:30pm. The classes are free.

OCW is looking for someone who could commit to preparing and leading class at least once a week for 2 to 3 months. Ideally, this person would start teaching the week of March 17. OCW is seeking teachers for Mon, Tues, and Thurs evenings.

OCW is also seeking volunteers who would like to assist in the ESL classes on a semi-regular basis. No teaching experience is required, only the desire to help immigrants grow in their confidence and ability to communicate in English.

If you are interested in helping with the ESL classes in any capacity, OCW would love to hear from you!
