Being mindful of personal water use is a responsible move, but urban water use is literally a drop in the bucket relative to industrial agriculture, which uses water for irrigation, livestock, pesticide/fertilizer application, crop cooling, and more.
@sfchronicle reported last week that agriculture accounts for a whopping 80% of California’s water usage. So where does all of that water go? 💧
Most of us know that almonds and rice use a ton of water to grow, but it might surprise you to learn what CA’s single greatest water user is…drumroll please…alfalfa.
Yes, alfalfa.
Alfalfa is used almost exclusively for feeding cattle and dairy cows. 🐄Nearly 1M acres of alfalfa are grown in California. It has a long season (you can grow it almost all year) and requires massive acreage, which brings it to the very top of California’s agricultural water use.
Reducing our reliance on factory-farmed beef and dairy would substantially reduce our agricultural land and water use.
Meat production uses 22% for all global freshwater, and demand for more and cheaper industrial meat is environmentally destructive to the land and economically devastating to the smaller farms pushed out of the way for these large-scale facilities.
