Here is today's update from Cloud's owner:Please keep them in your thoughts.

"Hello everyone and thank you for the prayers and support. I sat in the dog run at the vet with Cloud for a little over 2 hours after they gave him preanesthetic to make sure he did not hurt himself as he flops around not being able to get up on his own. I stayed with Cloud in there until they took him to surgery. The surgery lasted 3 hours and I stayed there at the vet hospital until Cloud was back in the run recovering and now got home for less than an hour and will be going back and be there by 5-- I saw what came out of Cloud-- 2 approx. 8 inch long plastic material thin strips full of holes for screws. One had been on either side of his spine and screwed in. A lot of scar and fibrous material grown over the 2 plates. Infection with pus under the plates. All cleaned out. Infection was going inward and pus not coming to the surface. Only serum to the surface. Dr. Harai kept the plates and screws as a trophy-- I wanted them but did not dare ask him
for them. When Dr. Harai finally came out it was the first time I had ever seen or met him although this is the 3rd surgery he has done for me. He said that it took a lot longer than he thought it would take. He also said that he had put many of these plates in but that this was the first he had ever taken out.
With pus pushing inward I can assume it was pushing on the spinal cord in that area and that is why Cloud could not urinate on his own and why he could not get up or use his hind legs correctly. I am hoping that with the pressure off the spinal cord that Cloud will regain what was lost. Only time will tell. THe important thing is what he was rejecting is gone-- no hardware in him at all- the plates were not metal-- only the screws- the 2 plates one on either side of his spine were plastic. Nothing left to bother him or cause infection.
I am understandably tired and emotionally drained. Tears ran down my face on the drive home- Sometimes it helps to cry-- relieves stress. Thank you everyone for the prayers, zen, and support. I will post again tonight before I go to sleep and up date as he comes home and recovers. Continued prayers, zen , and support are requested. It is what I have now to help give me strength as I am on my own and I need to be strong for all the dogs and me."
Thank you,
Elizabeth Forsberg and CLoud

For those concerned about Cloud, the surgery was long but he is recovering now and the surgeon was successful in removing the plate, that much we can tell you. Elizabeth Meek Pena appreciates all your prayers and good thoughts and asks that you please continue them, he is far from ok yet. Thank you all she is at the vet clinic, should post again later tonight or tomorrow.

"Many of you know Cloud- the Irish boy that Save Our Setters rescued & put back together so many years ago.(2007-2008) Cloud has been my special boy since SOS allowed me to adopt him after he had been put back together with plates & screws. His back had been broken & he had been left in a yard without medical attention in Georgia after being hit by a car. Cloud has spent many good years with me here in Sunny California since then. About 3 weeks ago it looked like he had an abcess and I had seen him back into a rose bush so he had surgery to drain the abcess. My vet said it did not behave like an abcess. It seems Cloud not only had metal parts in him but also a non-metal plate as well. His original orthopaedic specialist in Tennessee was contacted because I knew since he put Cloud together he would know what the problem was. Good thing because the non-metal plate only showed up as a very faint shadow on the new X-rays. His specialist in Tennessee is
giving directions to a surgeon here who is a friend of my own vet. It was beyond my own vet's expertise and so a surgeon needed to be in control of this. Our surgeon is going to follow the directions of Cloud's specialist in Tennessee and will be the hands for the specialist. It looks like this Thursday is when this plate will be taken out. Along with what appeared to be an abcess Cloud also began to lose use of his back legs. The strength began to go & he cannot urinate on his own at all. I saw immediately what was happening & because I handle paralyzed pets I immediately began expressing his bladder- Cloud cannot p*e without me. This may be corrected when the plate comes out if fluid is pushing on the spinal cord where this plate is located. If not I just keep caring for him & he and I will have a good life anyway- The plate needs to come out because his body is treating it as a foreign body now & having an immune response against the plate.... I will post again before the surgery. Please send zen-Cloud has overcome so much & he needs to enjoy the rest of his life until he is an elderly irish & the time is right for him to cross the bridge. It is not his time now. If you want to see Cloud's story it is still on the Save Our Setter web site. Thank you, Elizabeth Forsberg & Cloud"

Here is our handsome buddy Bo at his vet checkup earlier this week. Suzy Menard took the picture and said:"Bo is doing great, he has gained 7 pounds since his rescue by SOS. Here is picture today with his foster Mom Doreen at Northside Pet Hospital. He is a happy Irish setter."
What a great recovery he has made! He did test positive for Lyme disease so will need treatment for that. Thanks for the generosity of all who have helped with his expenses! At this point we are about $150 short of covering his expenses to date. You can donate at www.saveoursetters.org. There are many people interested in adopting Bo right now, but please consider some of the other sweethearts who have been waiting for forever homes, too!

A couple weeks ago, SOS committed to a young Irish lad who had been hit by a car and left for dead late at night in the frigid temps in western Wisconsin. A good Samaritan saw him, picked him up, and took him to a clinic. We were called around 11pm that night, and were advised of his condition - several puncture wounds (but no apparent damage to internal organs), head trauma, at least one spinal fracture, hypothermic, and comatose.
Knowing the Irish spirit, SOS was inclined to give him a chance to recover, and recover he did! He is now walking on his own (though he still needs a little help with balance), all signs of head trauma have abated, and the neurologists at the University of Minnesota VTH suspect he will make a full recovery!
Taking a chance on BO and his Irish spirit wasn't the only leap of faith SOS made. SOS also took a leap of faith that it's supporters would be there to help with the mounting vet bills. As of today, donations for BO are still nearly $1300 short of covering what SOS has already put on the credit card, and we expect another $500 before everything is said and done. If you are in a position to help with a donation, please visit www.saveoursetters.org and tell BO you believe in him, too!

Foster home needed in MI or IN for a matched set. They will need lots of people time and understanding, so a home where someone is home most of the time would be best. Due to a history of abuse, no teenage boys, please.

Donations needed now for Ginger! We have an update on sweet Ginger, our blind girl who was looking for a foster home some time ago. She has it, and has been evaluated at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Teaching Hospital. She has been diagnosed with hypermature cataracts and retinal degeneration. They recommend cataract surgery on her left eye and feel there is a good chance for success with that eye. Her right eye is not a good candidate for surgery though it needs to be monitored for any signs of inflammation going forward. The bill for the initial evaluation and medications is over $500. The surgery of course will be more Donations can be made on our website page or for those who want to use Paypal directly, the Paypal address is: [email protected]. Just make a note that the donation is for Ginger and the funds go directly to her.
She could not be in better hands, is with a board certified ophthalmic surgeon who is also a professor at the vet school.

This is Ginger, the blind girl who needs to be fostered short term in or near Knoxville, TN. Please fill out an app as soon as possible if you don't have a current one on file. As we mentioned she is pretty mellow, needs to be with someone who can keep vet appointments, and has a fairly quiet household, just because it will take her some time to find her way around.
