Evening rush hour in Amboseli park, Kenya ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

This month Oakland Zoo led an eco-trip to Kenya, where travelers not only experienced spectacular wildlife sightings like this, but also helped bring supplies to our long-time conservation partner Amboseli Trust for Elephants, who continues to do essential work protecting elephants in the wild.

You too could enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience โ€” click below for info on future eco-tours. All funds raised through these tours support our conservation partners in Kenya ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช

On Sunday, California Department of Fish and Wildlife brought 3 orphaned mountain lion cubs to Oakland Zooโ€™s vet hospital. The trio, estimated to be about 3 months old, were found in Portola Valley. CDFW believes the mother of these cubs is the same female mountain lion that was killed by a car in the same area.

The three siblings (2 males and 1 female), are thin but relatively healthy. Their care team at our veterinary hospital has given them the names Thistle, Spruce, and Fern (Fern is the female). In the wild, mountain lion cubs need about two years with their mother in the wild to learn survival skills. Because these cubs are so young, they lack those skills and sadly cannot return to the wild.

Instead, we will work with CDFW to find these cubs a new forever home at an appropriate institution.

While they are with us, we will take great care of these orphaned cubs, and, we will continue to take action to reduce human-wildlife conflict and make our shared living spaces safer for all animals.

CAT scan ๐Ÿ˜ป
Friday

Coloma, one of our resident mountain lions, visited our vet hospital this week for a routine full checkup. This pretty puma got a head-to-toe exam, dental cleaning, fur and claw check, CT imaging to inspect heart, kidneys, and other organs, and routine vaccinations.

Additionally, a vet tech from Lenity speciality clinic was on hand to collect blood, which we will store in case any future sick mountain lion kittens come our way and need healthy blood.

Overall Coloma looks great! Nice job Coloma and way to go OZ vet team ๐Ÿพ

ARCAS is working to keep the wildlife on the pacific coast of Guatemala wild! They receive parrots and other animals that were once pets and care for them in part of their education space. Some of these parrots are released back into the wild ๐Ÿฆœ

Part of caring for local wildlife is helping manage the dog and cat populations in the area. ARCAS offers spay and neuters for pets to reduce the amount of unwanted animals in the area โ€” itโ€™s also an opportunity to speak to local communities about how pets can hurt local wildlife, what they can do to help, and the importance of proper pet care.

๐Ÿพ Eggnog: The spunky Siamese pirate who knows what she wants (attention and snuggles!). She's curious, chatty, and loves carrying her toys around like little treasures.

๐Ÿ’– These confident sisters are inseparable and ready to bring double the love, playtime, and cuddles into your life. Theyโ€™re great with other cats, kids, and anyone who appreciates their charming quirks!

โœจ Adopt Gingerbread & Eggnog and let them fill your home with love! ๐Ÿ

Eggnog has had multiple full-body seizures. Sometimes a diagnosis for seizures can be reached with testing. Unfortunately, OAS does not have the resources for this. Eggnog should have a full veterinarian exam as soon as possible after adoption. Your veterinarian can make further recommendations for testing and treatment.

Briar has grown quite a bit (46lbs), so keepers have introduced larger hunks of meat to his diet, which mimics what his wild counterparts hunt.

Talk about resilience! Iniko, one of the condors of Ventana Wildlife Society's Central California flock, has already overcome so much, but recently came to us as a patient, sick with lead poisoning.

We are happy to report Iniko was successfully treated and is now flying free once again in Big Sur!

California Trail is open!

Guests can access our brand new expansion by riding the gondola. It features eight new animal habitats, a beautiful new childrenโ€™s play area, the fabulous Landing Cafรฉ, and breathtaking views of the Bay Area.

A transformational project that will further our commitments to animal care, education, and conservation, California Trail provides a chance to interpret one of the great stories of change in California and emphasizes the role of humans in shaping the ecology of the San Francisco Bay Area. Through live native animal and plant exhibits, the Zoo will highlight the delicate balance between plants, animals, and humansโ€”and the impact of change on all three. From casual visitors to serious students and scientistsโ€”all can join in the effort to nurture and create a better California.
