Meet Ace! This handsome 5-year-old, 60-pound Pit Bull mix is as gentle as they come. Calm and easygoing, Ace is a little shy at first, but with a few treats, he quickly warms up and shows his affectionate side. He's likely to be great with kids thanks to his mellow nature and patient temperament. Ace is independent with other dogs.

Meet Ace at Oakland Animal Services during adoption hours on Thursdays from 12-7 pm and Fridays to Sundays from 12-3 pm. No appointment needed!

This week, our vet team had the hop-portunity to examine Waru Wallaroo.

The last time this marvelous macropod was examined, the vets found evidence of a potential foreign body (possibly a blade of grass) in the lungs. We enlisted the help of Dr. Amy Allen, a veterinary internal medicine specialist, to perform a bronchoscopy -- a small camera was fed down Waru’s trachea to look at the airways in the lungs.

No foreign substance was found, so we will continue to watch Waru closely to make sure he stays healthy!

We are pleased to announce the California Trail jigsaw puzzle, a collab between Oakland Zoo and Oakland Puzzle Company.

This 500-piece jigsaw puzzle with art by Les Toil celebrates the resident species, habitat, and conservation stories of California Trail at Oakland Zoo. Zoo staff commissioned and guided the art for this puzzle. The oil painting by Les Toil accurately captures the characteristics of the animals and woodlands while maintaining the artist's signature retro charm.

California Trail goes beyond stunning views and a scenic gondola ride; it tells the story of California’s history, human impact on nature, and the importance of preserving its remarkable biodiversity. Oakland Zoo and this puzzle inspire visitors to connect with native wildlife and join the Zoo in Taking Action to protect the future of these species.

Much like real spiderwebs trap insects, those fake spiderwebs do too. And it's not just teeny, tiny insects that can get caught in the sticky strings….birds can get entangled in the fake webs, and so can any small animals that are not strong enough to break free.

So when decorating for Halloween this year, take a pass on covering your bushes and porch with fake spiderwebs. Instead, put up your webby decor inside your windows, and use twinkle lights or another alternative for your outdoor creations 🕸️

While Briar is no longer at the vet hospital, the hard work of his vet care team is paying off, as Briar is now enjoying the "head start space" at California Trail.

After rescued orphaned cubs like Briar are strong and healthy enough, they move to this area at California Trail, where they can explore new, larger spaces, and continue to grow physically and mentally, under the care of the California Trail keepers.

When Briar's ready, he'll be able to venture into the outdoor portion of this space and we'll turn on the CubCam -- paws crossed that happens soon!

Guests can access our brand new expansion by riding the gondola. It features eight new animal habitats, a beautiful new children’s play area, the fabulous Landing Café, and breathtaking views of the Bay Area.

A transformational project that will further our commitments to animal care, education, and conservation, California Trail provides a chance to interpret one of the great stories of change in California and emphasizes the role of humans in shaping the ecology of the San Francisco Bay Area. Through live native animal and plant exhibits, the Zoo will highlight the delicate balance between plants, animals, and humans—and the impact of change on all three. From casual visitors to serious students and scientists—all can join in the effort to nurture and create a better California.
