ARCAS is taking action to save sea turtles in Guatemala, and last month, two Oakland Zoo staffers were able to add their support in the field 🐢

In Guatemala, to help support their families, people known as parlameros steal turtle eggs from nests and sell them. ARCAS engages with the parlameros, paying them for eggs with money and bags of rice.

The eggs are put in a protected hatchery and are monitored closely so the hatchlings can be released back into the wild.

Only 1 in 1,000 sea turtles make it to adulthood. It takes 10 years for an adult to mature and be ready to lay eggs. Every egg that is rescued is a chance to help these sea turtle populations recover!

Before the weekend takes off, we wanted to share this lifting Friday moment -- Condor 745, after being treated for lead toxicity and getting vaccinated for HPAI at Oakland Zoo, returned home to Pinnacles National Park, where the condor team there got this amazing video of him returning to the wild 🦅❤️

It’s the most important time of the year…when our Zoo community has the opportunity to make its BIGGEST impact for animals!

To kick off the giving season, we’re launching a $150,000 matching gift challenge — meaning your support will be DOUBLED, thanks to a generous group of donors.

At Oakland Zoo, we care for chimpanzees who experienced unsuitable living conditions in their younger years. And, halfway around the world in Uganda, we’re helping protect wild chimps facing critical threats, including habitat loss and poaching.

Caring for chimpanzees wherever they are in need is just one of the many ways that, with your support, we’re taking action for wildlife. Today, we hope you’ll join us.

Do we have a VetTales Friday this week? Fur sure we do 🐺

Sequoia, father figure of our grey wolf pack, got a full routine preventative exam on Wednesday at our veterinary hospital.

This proud papa got CT scans, a full physical exam, and blood tests. Dr. Lauren and team extracted one small broken tooth, but otherwise he looks great.

Nice work vet team and Sequoia!

Step aside Christopher Walken….there’s a new King of Cowbell 🔔

California Trail keepers are making sure rescued mountain lion cub Briar stays physically and mentally stimulated with new challenges and discoveries.

This resilient guy now weighs almost 28 pounds and is navigating his new surroundings expertly. Keepers change his furniture to provide new and challenging climbing opportunities to continue building up his muscles and balancing skills.

Briar spends a lot of time watching adult mountain lions Coloma and Silverado next door. He likes to stalk them and then pounce at the fence in play with them. The adults are still trying to figure out the little ball of energy, but they are incredibly curious about him and engage with him or lie nearby to watch him closely.

Briar will stay with us until California Department of Fish and Wildlife finds him a permanent home.

Did you know there's an apple orchard at Pixar?

Every year, Pixar staffers pick a bunch of apples and donate them to the animals of Oakland Zoo. It's a wonderful annual tradition! thanks Pixar 🍎❤️

California Trail is open!

Guests can access our brand new expansion by riding the gondola. It features eight new animal habitats, a beautiful new children’s play area, the fabulous Landing Café, and breathtaking views of the Bay Area.

A transformational project that will further our commitments to animal care, education, and conservation, California Trail provides a chance to interpret one of the great stories of change in California and emphasizes the role of humans in shaping the ecology of the San Francisco Bay Area. Through live native animal and plant exhibits, the Zoo will highlight the delicate balance between plants, animals, and humans—and the impact of change on all three. From casual visitors to serious students and scientists—all can join in the effort to nurture and create a better California.
