For the same reason that exercise and time spent with friends are a huge boost for our mental health, shelter dogs benefit greatly from social activity, too. Our team are experts at structuring playgroups with all kinds of dogs, and keeping those dogs safe and happy is their number one goal. Wondering how that's accomplished? Read all about it on our News page: https://bit.ly/3ELaQH3

These are just a few outtakes from our January playgroups—most of these pups are still available for adoption! Don't miss this week's Valentine's adoption special, with waived fees on all adult dogs: eastbayspca.org/dogs

Gracie and Lucy were such a perfectly matched pair we decided to bond them! That means this delightful Tortoiseshell/Calico duo will go to the same home, and continue to enjoy each other's company for years to come.

Two cats = twice the love, twice the fun, and a built-in friendship that helps both pets adjust smoothly to their new home. This pair are truly each other's yin and yang with their complimentary personalities—somewhat shy Gracie is happy to let playful, gregarious Lucy lead the way.

Yosemite is a sweet Cattledog with a big heart. This loving goofball embodies the spirit and smarts of his breed, and would love to put that energy into play with his new person! He loves games that require his brain, and excels at finding hidden treats, learning new skills, playing tug-of-war, and retrieving toys of all kinds.

This one-year-old has tons of affection to give; if you're looking for a sweet, fun, and energetic playmate, look no further! Now through Sunday, February 16 he is *free* to adopt throughout Pawsitively Smitten Valentine's Special.

In an exciting exchange of ideas and practices, we partnered with Oakland Zoo’s education department to spotlight the intersection of training, enrichment, and animal care. This collaboration stemmed from a unique “trade” idea: Oakland Zoo graciously invited our BARK program students to a complimentary zoo field trip that highlighted their training and enrichment techniques used with the zoo animals. In return, East Bay SPCA hosted a program for the zoo’s Teen Wild Guides (TWGs), introducing them to our shelter’s training approaches and highlighting the many similarities between our methods and those used in zoo settings.

Our Behavior & Training department hosted their first PORTL workshop last weekend. Run by local trainer Rochelle Ball at our Oakland campus, this workshop allowed participants to practice the intricate skills involved in designing training plans for complex behaviors. PORTL stands for Portable Operant Research and Training Lab, and was developed by Jesús Rosales-Ruiz and Mary Hunter.

We hope to offer more PORTL workshops in the future, providing our community with a way to learn and perfect these valuable training skills!

Happy Tail: Chewie 🐕‍🦺

Adopter Emily writes, "Chewie was adopted by my husband and me in January 2024. He is a German Shepherd mix. When we first took him home he was 3 months old & 13 pounds. Now he is just over a year old & 83 pounds. Chewie is playful and silly. He’s a big baby. He’s also very smart! Chewie is 88% German Shepherd, 6% Chow and 6% Beauceron. That mix makes him extra fluffy, and taller than a typical German shepherd. He gets compliments all the time on his looks. Thank you to all the kind staff at Oakland SPCA who made the adoption process very smooth. Also thank you for taking such good care of him during intake. It sounds like he was in a rough spot when he was rescued and the staff helped him."

Thank you for adopting and sharing, Emily!

They're available to adopt as a pair, and their new family will get it all: With a Halloweena, a sweet, shy, and curious kitten, and with Sweetpea, an independent kitty who also loves socializing and snuggling with her favorite humans.
