Before animals can participate in our after-school BARK Training Program, they must pass a rigorous Behavior & Training evaluation to ensure they are suitable for visits with students in schools. Here's a peek at what that looks like behind the scenes: Our staff volunteer (enthusiastically) to have an animal(s) in their office to ensure their comfort level with people coming and going, different sounds and smells, and simulate the sort of busy environment that a classroom can generate. As a bonus, we get to enjoy the serotonin boost that a bundle of precious puppies provides. These absolutely adorable puppies are doing a perfect job as office assistants and will definitely brighten any space they visit.

BARK is a part of our robust Youth Programs offerings. These classes happen in schools around the East Bay where we visit and teach students about animal behaviors, make creations for shelter animal stimulation, and of course, visit with pre-approved animals. This snowball is Cherry! Cherry loves to chase toys, go on walks, and make new friends. At eight years old she has skills, manners, and a calming personality that is easy to fall in love with.

This sweet, social Husky came to us with cancer in one leg, which needed to be amputated to ensure her health moving forward. Cherry has adapted amazingly to the tripod life, and is looking for a loving home where she can snuggle up and show off her playful side!

We 🧡🖤 Spooky Season, but know this time of year can be challenging for pets in several ways. Here are a few tips for keeping your animals comfortable during the festivities:

Costumes: Some animals enjoy wearing clothes but others, not so much. Make sure costumes are the right size for your pet and watch for signs of anxiety when dressing them. If they show tight posture or indicate discomfort, opt for a fun bandana or collar instead! And, always keep collars and tags on underneath a costume.

Trick-or-Treating: If your animal is spooked by the doorbell, strangers, or just strangely dressed humans, make a plan ahead of time to keep them in their own room or crated where they’ll be most comfortable, and opt out of inviting trick-or-treaters to your door if necessary. If you plan to take your dog trick-or-treating with you, watch them for signs of stress and let them choose when the excitement becomes too much.

Candy: Be careful with candy and sweets, especially chocolate and the artificial sweetener xylitol, both of which are toxic to animals. Keep Halloween treats well out of reach!

Have a safe and happy Halloween! 🦇

A recent Field Trip to Leona Canyon park helped Lucki come out of his shell. This sweet Shepherd boy came to us as a young puppy, and returned to us earlier this year. Since Lucki's return our volunteers and staff have helped him gain confidence, learn new skills, and make friends. At nine months old, he is playful teenage pup with lots to offer his future adopter.

With less experience in new environments, Lucki is benefiting greatly from time outside the shelter where he can sniff, explore, and relax. He has done amazing on his outings, enjoying time splashing in the creek and plopping comfortably on a couch. He's going to make a wonderful !

Lucki's adoption fees are waived through October 31 through our Shepherd and Husky Homecoming Special, sponsored by Metro Services Group.

It’s National Cat Day! Did you know that two cats can be better than one? 🐈🐈

Cats that have a companion benefit in many ways. In addition to getting more exercise, playtime, and mental stimulation when they have a friend, paired cats learn from each other. Kittens look to their siblings to pick up new skills, and older cats with a buddy adjust to new situations and experiences with less fear.

This very fun kitten duo are Coraline and Sally! Sisters who came to us together and preferred to keep it that way, Coraline and Sally were designated as “bonded” by our team.

For those who aren't familiar with "bonded" pets, when our team identifies an animal pair that are calmest and happiest sticking together, we'll require them to go to the same home, to ensure their quality of life for years to come. Whether bonded or not, we always offer a discounted rate when adopting two cats together, to encourage feline friendships.

These two are affectionate, playful, and bound to make you laugh; a dynamic duo worth meeting! Meet Coraline and Sally in Dublin: eastbayspca.org/cats

Like the easy life? Then I'm the perfect match for you. I'm a relaxed, laid-back kind of dog who enjoys long naps, watching movies, curling up on laps, and walking very short distances from the couch to the food bowl and back. This is waiting to meet you at our Dublin location.
In coordination with this year’s initiative, we are pleased for the support of Donwtownsubaruoakland, helping pets like Coney to find their way to real homes.

Happy Tail! Winter's adopters shared their story with us:
"On the day me and my husband eloped we knew that we wanted to grow our family right away. So we went immediately after nuptials to the EBSPCA. We knew that we wanted to adopt a cat, and at one point considered adopting a bonded pair we met there that day. If we weren’t living in a very small studio with rules we would have taken as many sweet souls that we could handle.

We met Winter and she warmed right up when we gave her a gravy snack. I thought well a cat who can be made happy with good food is the cat for me. She was all alone there that day, we were told that she had a heart murmur and possibly some sight issues, and shouldn’t live with other cats or kids. But we knew that she was the one for us, like I said she liked good food.

We got her home and she was a bit shy for the first hour or so. But then, we got her a bunch of toys and discovered she liked to play with the long stingy ones. We played and played all night and when it was time for bed she snuggled up right next to us. I thought, this cat is going to be just fine. And she is!

She’s growing up so fast. We love her personality. She of course sleeps all day, and while I work from home. She likes to walk across my laptop and paw at my cellphone screen. I hear her message loud and clear. She’s a chatty cat and not afraid to tell us what she wants. When my husband comes home it means it’s time to play! She’s got our routine memorized perfectly, and when it’s time for bed she likes to curl up at my legs. Oh and she still likes those same gravy snacks today! Winter has changed our lives and we hope to adopt again in the future."

We love hearing the great stories our community shares. Please tell us your tail! https://eastbayspca.org/about/news/happy-tails

Fostering is a fun, flexible way to help a dog in need of a brief respite. Dogs like this sweet girl, Cherry, who is on the mend after a serious leg issue that we were able to address. The time she spent with a foster family helped her to rest, feel more relaxed, and have he opportunity to adjust to the tripod life. Cherry is back at our Dublin adoption center and ready to go home!

Our Dog Field Trip program is a flexible way to help shelter dogs thrive. Explore the Marina, hike the Oakland hills, or enjoy a café outing with a dog wearing an "Adopt Me" bandana—you could be the bridge to helping them find a loving home. Happy Tail: Pancho (FKA Geronimo) 💕

“When I went in to the East Bay SPCA, I prayed to God to allow my future companion to choose me and not the other way around. The universe delivered. I was forewarned that Pancho came with behavioral issues and would perhaps need more attention than other dogs. With him being at the shelter for such a long time, I understood how Pancho felt because prison is part of my past and I too was labeled incorrigible, but I shut the critics down by changing my life around.

He’s given me structure, discipline, and many reasons to spend more time outside enjoying the sunshine. He's also made sure that I reach my 10k daily step goal. He's such a joy to live with. I observed that he wasn't used to sleeping on the bed with a human & he sure wasn't used to laying down on the living room sofa. He's definitely getting used to the good life now. My family has fallen in love with him already and when they visit us, Pancho gets ecstatic!!

Undoubtedly, Pancho was a blessing in disguise & I love him so much! No one, absolutely no one is perfect and when life kicks our butt, we can all use a lot more love, acceptance and patience I love you, Pancho!”
