‼️ Deadly Pythiosis Infection Reported in Sarasota & Manatee Counties ‼️

A rare and often fatal infection called Pythiosis has been detected in at least five dogs in our area within the last month—four of those cases were fatal. 💔

🐶 What is Pythiosis?

Pythiosis is caused by the aquatic mold Pythium Insidiosum and can severely affect a dog's skin or gastrointestinal tract; frequently misdiagnosed as a fungal infection. It thrives in contaminated or stagnant water, including floodwaters, swamps, puddles, and retention ponds.

⚠️ Symptoms to Watch For:
🔹 Sores on the skin
🔹 Weight loss
🔹 Vomiting
🔹 Diarrhea
🔹 Loss of appetite

💡 How to Protect Your Pet:

🚫 Avoid letting dogs wade, swim, or drink from stagnant or contaminated water. Can affect horses and humans, too.
🛑 Be extra cautious after storms or floods
⏳ Seek immediate veterinary care if symptoms appear—early detection is critical

A local veterinarian warns that Pythiosis is incredibly difficult to treat and often fatal if not caught early.

🐾Animal Ordinance Updates Emphasize Responsible Pet Ownership 🐾

At the Feb. 4 meeting, the Marion County Commission approved important updates to the county's animal-related ordinance! These updates aim to promote responsible pet ownership, public safety, and property rights.

Here’s what’s new:

✨ Strengthening Pet Ownership: The ordinance now clarifies pet owner responsibilities, reducing the risk of lost pets, property damage, and conflicts.

⚖️ Ensuring Public Safety: Expanded authority for animal control officers helps protect both citizens and animals.

📈 Stricter Business Regulations: Animal-related businesses and breeders must meet higher standards of animal welfare.

🐾 Increasing Lost Pet Reunification: All new pet owners must update pet ownership with the microchip manufacturer.

❤️ Protecting Vulnerable Pets: The updated ordinance now allows for shorter hold times for stray animals at the shelter. Reducing hold times helps decrease overall length of stay for animals at the shelter, minimizing the negative effects of the shelter environment. This change allows for quicker adoptions, improves shelter efficiency, and ultimately enhances the health and well-being of all animals.

🤝 Supporting Animal Rescues: Licensed rescues can now offer adopters a free county license for the first year to encourage responsible pet ownership.

🔒 Bolstering Animal Abuser Registry: Before transferring ownership, individuals must check the Civil Enjoinment List to prevent restricted individuals from obtaining pets.

🐶 Irresponsible Pet Owner: Strengthened section of the ordinance enhances protection for both citizens and animals in Marion County, fostering accountability and promoting a safer, more responsible pet ownership culture.

TEMPORARY STORM FOSTERS NEEDED! ⛈️📢

With the Hurricane Milton approaching our community, we'd like to place as many of our animals into temporary storm foster homes as possible!

We will provide all the supplies needed: food, crate, toys, etc.

We will be placing fosters into temporary homes on Monday and Tuesday. We anticipate having them return to VOCAL on Friday.
