Breeding season is right around the corner!

A few reminders for the coming weeks and months:

If you have an open mare you want to breed early this upcoming spring, she needs to be under lights starting December 1st! We offer board and management for open mares who need to be under lights.

This is also the time to start thinking about breeding soundness exams and pre-breeding necessities such as cultures, cytologies, and breeding contracts.

If you have a mare who is due to foal early in the year, start keeping a closer eye on her for any changes - especially to her udder. Remember those last vaccines given in the 10th month of pregnancy are very important for antibodies in the colostrum for the foal. Also be sure to check if your mare has a caslick that needs to be opened.

If you are planning on or are thinking about having your mare foal at Buena Vista Farm this upcoming season, please reach out now to reserve a spot for your mare. Spots are filling up quickly! We offer tours of our facility by appointment so you can see firsthand how we will care for your mare and her foal.

For questions or quotes, or to set up a tour, please contact our Farm Manager Kaitlyn Canton at 352-425-8618 or our Office at 352-622-9100.

We look forward to another wonderful season!

Breeding Season is fast approaching!

Do you have an open mare you would like to have in foal early in the year? If so, it’s time to start thinking about putting your mare under lights!

The term “Under Lights” describes having a mare in a stall (or other confined space) under artificial lighting either early in the morning or into the evening to extend her body’s perceived length of day. Horses are naturally long day breeders - which means their trigger to start and keep cycling is the prolonged daylight hours of late spring through early fall.

In order to mimic the longer days and have mares begin cycling early, they are placed under artificial lights at least 60 days prior to the desired breeding date. The lights must be bright enough to read a newspaper, and the mares need at least 16 hours of continuous light exposure in order to start cycling. We accomplish this by mares coming into a stall in the afternoon and lights automatically turning on at 5pm. Our lights are on timers and stay on until 11pm to give the mares the extra hours of light exposure that they need.

Need to have your mare under lights this winter? Contact us today to reserve her spot! We will begin putting mares under lights December 1st.

All is well here at the farm!

We received minimal impact from Hurricane Ian - a lot of wind and minimal rain. All the horses are happy and thankful for a bit of cooler fall weather now!

Our thoughts go out to those who were significantly affected by this storm in south Florida, and those Ian will continue to impact as it tracks up the East coast.

Calm before the storm yesterday. Everyone here at the farm got to enjoy a lovely double rainbow during breakfast.
