PRESS RELEASE...

Vehicle Pursuit and K9 Assisted Apprehension

Grant Valley Township – Beltrami County, MN; On October 7th, 2022 at approximately 4:22AM Beltrami County Deputies observed a mid-2000’s white GMC Yukon traveling westbound on Trengove Rd NW traveling at a high rate of speed. Beltrami County Deputy Anthony Hanson activated his patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and siren in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle failed to stop resulting in a pursuit.

Deputies pursued the vehicle for approximately 22.5 miles through western Beltrami County and into southern Clearwater County with speeds averaging in excess of 100 miles per hour. The vehicle lost control on a sharp s-curve on 243rd Ave, a gravel road in Clearwater County. The suspect vehicle left the roadway crashing into the woods and became hung up on a tree after approximately 200 feet.



The driver of the vehicle was given multiple commands to exit the vehicle. The suspect fled on foot into a heavily wooded swampy area. Additional deputies from Beltrami, Hubbard and Clearwater Counties arrived and established a perimeter. Multiple warnings of K9 deployment were given. The suspect was given ample time to surrender but chose to ignore the warnings.

Beltrami County K9 “Rip” was deployed by his K9 Handler Deputy Hanson and successfully tracked the suspect for 300 yards through heavy brush and swamp. K9 Rip located a male hiding under a small tree and apprehended him until deputies could take the suspect into custody. Dustin Lewis Anderson, age 33 of Bagley, was arrested and transported to Sanford Health for treatment for injuries sustained during the K9 apprehension.

Anderson was charged with felony fleeing in a motor vehicle, felony possession of a controlled substance and gross misdemeanor 2nd degree DWI. The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Hubbard and Clearwater County Sheriff’s Offices.

Heartbreaking.

With heavy hearts, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium announced tonight that Winter the Dolphin died at approximately 8 p.m. as animal care experts from around the country worked to treat her gastrointestinal abnormality. The CMA family is devastated.

During preparation for a procedure, the CMA Animal Care team observed that Winter’s behavior and vital signs were declining. The medical team tried several life-saving efforts, but she died being held by her caregivers.

“While we are heartbroken by Winter’s death, we are comforted knowing that our team did everything possible to give her the best chance at survival. We worked with specialists and marine mammal experts from around the country to provide her with the best care available. Our staff worked around the clock during this challenging time,” said Veterinarian Dr. Shelly Marquardt, DVM, CVA. “I’m honored to work alongside such dedicated and talented professionals who gave their all for Winter.”

The CMA team expresses our deepest gratitude to the thousands of people from around the world who sent caring messages for Winter. She truly inspired hope and was loved by millions of people worldwide.

Winter, we love you.

CMA will be closed on Friday to provide time for our staff to grieve. A grief counselor will be made available to the team.

Plans for a memorial for Winter, honoring the positive impact she made on the world, will be announced soon.
