Let’s talk about 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙑𝙚𝙩 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙚 — I had a great conversation yesterday with a friend/client that sparked this topic…

We all know when you have a problem, you call your vet!

But let’s talk about calling us when you don’t have a problem…

Some of our winningest clients, horses and programs call us when they don’t have a problem— and pretty consistently, we don’t see many major problems with these client horses…why is that? Because they’re calling to get their horses in to get jogged, palpated, and to be gone over even when they’re WINNING everything. Even when they feel great.

Having a constant baseline on your horse can catch SMALL issues before they become MAJOR ones. We can correct shoeing angles before they cause soft tissue injuries, we can treat subtle lameness before it’s ever apparent in the arena… when your horse(s) never have to perform sore, they remain confident! And confident horses win!

A basic lameness exam starts at $125.. similar to what an entry fee, etc. might cost! Adding routine and consistent lameness exams into your regimen can not only save you money long term, but it will hopefully increase the longevity and career or your horse(s) and we all know how expensive new horses are!

I was sorting old papers last night, and stumbled across this. It made me smile and think.

You see, I had a big race I wanted to go to & it wasn't in the budget. It just wasn't an option. I decided to print up these sheets an sponsorship forms to hand out.

I can not recall how many packets I passed out, but I can remember picking up a side hustle. I started bartending 3-4 nights a week for 6 months. This was on top of galloping race horses 6 mornings a week & riding a few training horses. I saved & saved for 6 months. I usually made $40-50 a night. I saved up enough money to go to the BFA Futurity & buy a c**t. I shopped & shopped. Finally bought a coming 2 year old for $1800. It was the best bang for my buck.
......I never went back to bartend after the BFA. I went to work, breaking that c**t. Kept busy galloping & training the few I had in the barn. A year and a half later, I sold that c**t for $9,500. I was ecstatic. I then rolled that money into a pair of nicer prospects....... I started them & trained them and sold them. Repeating & repeating. Setting aside money as i went. Upgrading the horse trailer... that is how it all started.....

I Just wanted to share this, it brought back a lot of memories. It made me smile and appreciate the hustle behind it all.

Currently, I have the next group waiting for me to start them...... 16 years later. I own 3 coming 2 year olds. I'm excited for the future with them! And I'm excited to have some horses for sale down the road ✨️✨️✨️

A good read 📚 🧐

A lot of people asked about money management.

I will say to get rolling in the horse business, where my goal was for the horses to pay for the horses, I had a LOT of side hustles. I feel like this was necessary to get up out of the trenches, but some people can do it without it.

What I lacked was horse power… not work ethic. Horse power costs money. Lol.

So over the years I rode for the public, lessons, I made buckle boxes for a long time, flipped furniture, sold jewelry that I made, made wood art signs, had a laser engraving business, and if you go way back… I also sold geckos 🦎 (this is real 🤣) popsicles and hand painted halters and stall signs.

I personally do not believe in taking out a loan for a horse, but I am not hating on those who do. Everything, every decision for me is a math problem where I weigh out risk, and horses are a high risk investment. I wouldn’t want to take out a loan and then have my horse die or cripple up.

So, if you don’t take out a loan… how do you start buying horses? One at a time. Sell it, buy another, a gajillion times over. When people hear me talk about riding papers and think I’m being a snob, or say to me “well, not everyone can afford that.” My response is always “ No Karen, you can’t afford NOT TO.”

Because here is the deal, when I am riding something popular and well bred, and it’s not a fit for me or I don’t get along with it, I can ALWAYS move it. When I don’t have a lot of money to spend and those choices matter, even if I don’t plan to sell, I ALWAYS buy for resale because it helps to mitigate some risk.

Also, I won’t keep one for three extra months when I’m over it, spend $5,000 more to make $1,000 more on a sale. I will happily cut my losses and move on if that’s what needs to be done and make it up on another.

Another thing that really helped me was a friend sitting me down and we wrote out 3 months of my bank card statements and separated it monthly by what I was spending. You’d be SHOCKED about what adds up that you can likely cut out. Those small daily decisions matter. Be honest with yourself.

The next thing is who you associate with. You hang out with broke people who complain about being broke? “Poor me” “life is unfair” “it’s not my fault.” Are you hanging out with those people?? Because if you are… that’s where you’re going to stay… I promise you.

I want to hang out with people MAKING MONEY and living the life I want to live. When you think $2,000 a day is a lot but you’re hanging out with people who make $20,000 a day, or $200,000 a day… the vibe is much different, and they force you to level up to keep in company. The attitudes are different. Often, very uplifting, very open about struggles, they hold themselves accountable for decisions and all of that will rub off on you.

Hang out with 4 millionaires and you’ll become the 5th.

This goes back to me saying “you can train your brain to see the good or see the bad.” I was raised in the latter… I rose to the fore. No one is coming to save you, if you want to change your life… get a shovel.

I never despise those making more than me… I have 100 questions though. Horses is typically a bad business model because it’s based solely on what you can produce in a day. I can’t hire someone to do the same quality job I can do, because of this, I have started many other small businesses. Although much goes into my horse investments, much does not. I have bought and moved money into things that don’t eat. Other businesses, land investments, etc…

I see a lot of old broke horse trainers and I refuse to be one of them.

I am an open book, even with my peers, I want them all to be successful and smart with money. (Which is why I’m always in trouble running these payouts. 🙃)

Now this may upset some, but if you dig deep here, it’s not even about money… it’s about freedom.
