For years we have been feeding Purina Nutra Blend Gold as a basis for our Birds diets, As you may know we moved to Florida this year and based on that change we are making some changes to our feeding program
We choose the Nutra Blend Gold on the basis of value and it was 95% nutritionally complete to feed all our birds from Parakeets on up to Amazons and Greys , the other benefit was the extra fat was good for them during the cold winter months . when we bought it before it was 25.00 for 50 Lbs , a little know tidbit is that our Purina dealers claim that the Mazuri food is the same formula just a different die , a couple years ago they shut down production and moved where it was made and restarted making it , it seems recently the die changed a bit , instead of a perfectly round pellet it is now a biscuit shape ,
For some odd reason and it may just be the fact it is just Florida the price is way higher, anywhere from 35.00 to 38.00 dollars for the same bag, doesn’t make sense as its made in Gainesville, My dealer in Tn can get and sell it for 25,00 and dealers in Florida sell it for 35-38.00 a bag , comes from same place , anyway don’t get me started on higher prices in Florida
Being as we are in Florida we don’t need the extra fat for colder weather, so we are making a change.
We are now using 3 pellets mixed for our feed, Purina Nutra blend gold, Purina Checker Pigeon pellet and DR D’s , all 3 are good pellets on their own but each brings something different to the table , I’ve always know that DR D’s is a good pellet , it was always a little higher , now at 40 dollars a bag vs 35.00 for Purina Nutrablend gold and 25 for Purina checkers it’s a close contender , I’ve take to several people that fed all Dr D’s and they love it , there was a concern about it being outside in this heat and humidity but as long as the cage is covered from the elements I think its fine. The thing to watch for on all these is the manufacture date, it’s very possible to get a bag of the Purina that has been sitting in a warehouse for months, check the dates on the bag and refuse it of its old , Dr D’s only has a 6 month shelf life
OK that’s it, that’s what we are doing now is a 3 way mix of all 3 pellets, We still make our own formula with Dr D’s and the Nutra blend gold and it still works well for us
