This guy LOVES snuggles, it’s so precious. They get upset when I have to put them back in their cage 😄. I am so glad that this species isn’t at all what I thought, they’re even better ❤️. In honor of Wicked, I have renamed them Elphaba, Elphie for short, & Fiyero 🤗. I couldn’t help it, I’ve always loved Wicked & have seen it on Broadway many times, now seeing the movie as well I knew I needed to name my animals after some of the characters.

I hope everyone’s Thanksgiving went well. Mine turned into an animal show & tell per usual lol. This year little Miss Bean was the star of the show, & Mister Sirius also got to come out. Sirius is my resident pet long eared hedgehog that I don’t really post about on here since I don’t breed LEH’s. He’s going through a bit of a teenage phase currently & is being a bit naughty, but he still got some tasty turkey for dinner, just like the greater tenrecs got. All the lesser tenrecs are in torpor, so they aren’t eating or they’d of gotten turkey too.

I totally forgot to share the bioactive terrariums I created for my 2 greater tenrecs. There’s more fake plants than real ones in their enclosures since ferns require a higher humidity than I wanted to do with this species, even though in the wild they can tolerate higher humidity since some greater tenrecs live in the rainforest. I also wasn’t sure if they’d try to dig up or eat any live plants, so I kept the live ones minimal. A couple Haworthia didn’t make it past the first week with them, but the nerve plant & pepperomia are okay so far. They have loved the bioactive enclosures so far.

A little snuggle session with this sweet girl 🥰. People have always said how “bitey” the greater tenrec species is, but never how sweet & cuddly they can also be. I have yet to be bit luckily, but I haven’t had them very long yet. But with my background with exotic animals, it’s just second nature to always know where my skin is in relation to an animal’s mouth & to be very conscious of that lol. So far it’s been great getting to know my new additions & watching them thrive in their bioactive enclosures.

Look who’s back for boarding, it’s Bean the runt from my litter this summer! She’s still a tiny little thing, but she has grown a lot too. She’s now sitting at 74 grams. Her mom & I are trying to keep her eating through torpor, which so far so good but it is on & off. I never thought I’d see her make it over 50 grams to be honest, so this is amazing progress. She is still the sweetest tennie, & loves to explore. I love it when I get to see my babies. Bean lives with my best friend a few hours away, so I do get to see her more than others. I wanted her to go to a well trusted home that I could keep track of her progress since she’s such a special tenrec who needs more care than usual, since she still gets syringe fed. While she can eat insects without issue, her weight just wasn’t going up like it should with just insects & she stopped eating them about a month ago due to torpor. So she’s on a mix of goats milk & Carnivore Care to make sure her weight doesn’t fall behind & she stays healthy.

After years of patiently waiting to get this species, I was finally able to add greater Madagascar tenrecs to my herd & breeding program! Thank you so much to for entrusting me with your animals, & to for getting them to the US, Hedgehog Valley for helping arrange everything with the import. I am so excited to start my adventure with keeping & breeding this species. So far I am loving these guys, they’re a good bit different from the lessers in many aspects. Stay tuned for updates on these guys. I’ve only added 1 breeding pair to my herd, but they’re both proven breeders so I should have some luck with having babies in the future. These guys arrived while I was on a trip to Washington state delivering some lesser tenrecs, etc the past 10 days, so I’ve only just gotten to meet them last night & got photos of them today 🥰.

Thank you so much for bringing me along to to be a part of their quill study using UV light. Our last baby from this years litter, Monstera, & our adult male Hemlock were part of the study. I love being able to help science & the study of these precious animals. What a great day it’s been, getting to help Hedgie’s in the Pines with their herd taking part in the study was great. 🤗🔬

I am back from my adventure in Madagascar! We did manage to find 1 species of tenrecs in the wild, which was the lesser hedgehog tenrecs. We located 3 in a tree hole thanks to a local guide. It was magnificent. I learned some new & unusual things about tenrecs from locals that I’ll be sharing soon. Unfortunately it was too chilly still in the other parts of Madagascar for us to see other species of tenrecs. We did visit a wildlife research center who just had a researcher start a project on tenrecs, so I’ll be contacting them to try to get updates on the project as it goes along.

Our little runt, now nicknamed Bean, is still pretty tiny but is growing & doing very well. She just hit 31 grams! She can eat small bugs on her own & everything now. Her progress has been very slow due to her extremely small size, but she’s tiny but mighty that’s for sure. She’s gonna be here for a while till she catches up in weight, so I’ll get to love on her for a while longer 🥰.

A little bit about Quill Valley Hedgehogs & Tenrecs

Hello my name is Victoria Rodgers, I own & run Quill Valley Hedgehogs & Tenrecs. I am a small hobby breeder of pedigreed African pygmy hedgehogs (& coming soon lesser Madagascar tenrecs in 2021-2022). I am located in central MD, but more specifically Myersville, MD.

A little bit about myself & my background- I’ve owned hedgehogs for 5 years, I started my hedgehog breeding program in mid 2018. Prior to starting my hedgehog breeding program I was a small animal rescuer that specialized in hedgehogs, I was a small animal rescuer for a few years prior to becoming a breeder. I wanted to gather as much experience as possible before I began breeding, & felt like rescuing was the best way to do that, plus I would get to help hedgie’s in need.

I battle a chronic illness & depression, due to this I am unable to work a normal job. My animals have helped so much over the years while I’ve been dealing with my health issues & facing my new normal of being forced to work from home 5 years ago due to my health issues. Hedgehogs & tenrecs are great emotional support animals.

Hedgehogs & tenrecs are two of my passions in life, but I do have other passions, one of the others being my other business that is for small animal accessories & jewelry for animal lovers called Hedgie Hog Tied (can be found on Etsy & on Facebook).
