Our little runt, now nicknamed Bean, is still pretty tiny but is growing & doing very well. She just hit 31 grams! She can eat small bugs on her own & everything now. Her progress has been very slow due to her extremely small size, but she’s tiny but mighty that’s for sure. She’s gonna be here for a while till she catches up in weight, so I’ll get to love on her for a while longer 🥰.

DNA results are finally in! 3 girls & 1 boy. The girls have all been reserved, but precious Monstera is still looking for his forever home. Monstera is super sweet & outgoing. I’ve got a triple stack of 67 gallon ReptiZoo glass tear down style terrariums for sale. 2 are brand new, I decided to go with larger size cages after I already got them. So my loss can be your gain! 1 is gently used, but in new condition. Asking $230 for the 2 brand new ones & $200 for the gently used one, or $600 for all 3 which will include the stacking spacers. Located in Ocean City, MD but willing to deliver back to central MD. Philo the runt baby got to accompany me to my last travel doctor visit today, for me to get my 2nd series rabies vaccination done for my trip to Madagascar in September. The travel doctors loved getting to meet little Philo, I brought Philo with me a week ago for my first series rabies vax as well since I’m still hand feeding Philo. I’m almost all set for my trip to go see tenrecs in the wild soon! Excited that it’s getting closer 🤗. Thank you for helping get me my vaccinations & meds needed for my upcoming trip.

No one ever talks about how difficult DNA testing baby tenrecs is 😅. They do some pretty funny faces & moves when trying to chew on the swab brush or push it out of their mouths lol. Even though it was tricky getting all 4 babies tests, especially the runt, they’ve all been tested & their samples will be sent out ASAP.

This years baby names theme is houseplants. So we’ve got Pothos, Monstera, Pilea, & Philo (philodendron). Right now Philo the runt is struggling to get a chance to nurse due to be so small, so I’ll be starting supplemental feedings to make sure they’re eating enough.

For those that guessed I am getting a long eared hedgehog, you were correct! This is Sirius, & he is a precious baby LEH that will be coming to me from my lovely friend Delilah at ❤️. She took these wonderful photos of my baby the other day 😍. This species will be a fun new adventure for me. He will be just my pet, no breeding of this species in my plans. I’m just looking forward to pet ownership 😊.

Little Bean as they’ve been nicknamed, the runt of the litter, is very slowly growing. She’ll be here for a while longer due to her size, I don’t want her leaving till she’s bigger. It looks like her left eye may have an issue because it’s never opened fully, so we’ll consult with our vet on whether or not that’ll be an issue for her, & what to do or not do about it. It doesn’t seem to bother her thankfully. She’s got the sweetest disposition thanks to the month I spent hand feeding her around the clock, she got very used to human interaction & craves it more than most tenrecs. All of my babies are very used to human interaction since they’re handled & talked to all the time, but this little gal had to be out with me every 3-4 hours a day for weeks.

Miss Ferula has a home & will be heading there in October, but till then she gets to hang out here for a while longer 🤗🥰.

Philo the runts favorite pastime is climbing up into my hair & hanging out in it 😅. They’re still so tiny, but are strong & outgoing. I am still waiting to get all the babies DNA test results, the lab is being slower this year.

When people ask me what my tenrec babies are like, I’m gonna send them this video of me kissing Curious’s tummy & face 🥰. My babies are always very socialized & chill, but last years litter that Curious is from, takes the cake. All her siblings are just as sweet & laid back. Pretty sure I could put my finger in her mouth & she still wouldn’t bite me, most tenrecs would gladly chomp an offered up finger lol. This girl is the product of what I’ve worked years to accomplish, very well socialized & well tempered tenrecs.

Hemlock came out for some grass time, he very much enjoyed it.

The tenrecs are starting to come out of torpor & are ravenous for their insects 🪱.

I know this isn’t my usual content, but I am trying to help my former animal care assistant back home in Middletown, MD find homes for some Robovorski hamster babies. He rescued a pregnant female from a petshop where males & females were kept mixed together. She gave birth to 9 babies the next day 😳. The babies were born on 01/14/24. There are 4 females and 1 male still looking for homes. They have been handled daily since about 4 weeks old, but are just a bit squirmy due to their age, but are very sweet & handleable. He is asking a small rehoming fee just to ensure they go to a good home. Proof of appropriate cage setup & food is required. Flower’s favorite place to be with me is either in my hand or under my arm lol. Anyone else’s tenrec have a favorite spot with them? She often falls asleep tucked against my side under my arm or in my hand 💜.

A little bit about Quill Valley Hedgehogs & Tenrecs

Hello my name is Victoria Rodgers, I own & run Quill Valley Hedgehogs & Tenrecs. I am a small hobby breeder of pedigreed African pygmy hedgehogs (& coming soon lesser Madagascar tenrecs in 2021-2022). I am located in central MD, but more specifically Myersville, MD.

A little bit about myself & my background- I’ve owned hedgehogs for 5 years, I started my hedgehog breeding program in mid 2018. Prior to starting my hedgehog breeding program I was a small animal rescuer that specialized in hedgehogs, I was a small animal rescuer for a few years prior to becoming a breeder. I wanted to gather as much experience as possible before I began breeding, & felt like rescuing was the best way to do that, plus I would get to help hedgie’s in need.

I battle a chronic illness & depression, due to this I am unable to work a normal job. My animals have helped so much over the years while I’ve been dealing with my health issues & facing my new normal of being forced to work from home 5 years ago due to my health issues. Hedgehogs & tenrecs are great emotional support animals.

Hedgehogs & tenrecs are two of my passions in life, but I do have other passions, one of the others being my other business that is for small animal accessories & jewelry for animal lovers called Hedgie Hog Tied (can be found on Etsy & on Facebook).
