Scruffy to Fluffy is closed. We are no longer residing at the Ocean Park address.

I have endured relentless bullying at the hands of adults who should know better. Often times, bullies have more than one victim, though it may sometimes feel like you are alone at times. Adult bullies will utilize their employees, coworkers, friends, and strangers in their attacks.

I would like to take a moment to talk about what Adult Bullying looks like, and how you can help defuse them.

Adult bullying is often more subtle, and therefore more insidious. It can be cushioned in niceties that make it harder to address and have it be acknowledged. There is often a passive aggressive, sophisticated and covert edge to adult bullying. But it definitely happens.

It happens in the workplace, in schools, when there is a power dynamic. It happens on social media, and here on Facebook.

With bullying- there is often an individual at the helm and then “secondary bullying” which is when bystanders either see what’s happening and participate or are complicit by not saying anything.

I am referring clients to Hammond Kennels for grooming, Brian and Melissa.

They are both excellent choices, both wonderful with animals. I have known Melissa for 9 years, she is a beautiful, kind, creative, caring and loving person. Animals and people adore her. She is also an artist and musician. She paints and sells her creations, and is a Flautist in the North Oregon Coast Symphony, and the Columbia River Symphony.

There is a good chance she may sing for your pets just as I have. :)

Dear clients,

It is with much sadness that I inform you that, due to personal health reasons I will no longer be grooming.

This was not an easy decision for me, and I will miss all your pups greatly. Thank you for supporting my small business throughout the years. I'm happy to provide groomer recommendations if needed.

Best wishes,

Tina

Happy Valentine's Day to you and your furry pets!

Roses are red, violets are blue… as you celebrate Valentine’s Day, make it safe for your furry friends, too!

Reminder:
Beware of xylitol, a sugar substitute found in candy, gum, and baked goods that is toxic to pets. If you have cats, avoid lilies, and be careful with decorations like balloons, ribbons, and candles.

If you love dogs, you might be concerned about the mysterious dog respiratory illness spreading. I have spoken to our local veterinarian clinics, and there have been no local cases on record.

However, they are recommending we cut back on social outings, dog parks, walking groups, and kennels. We are doing the same. Here is a little more about the illness.

Dogs in at least seven states have been infected. Symptoms include coughing, fever, lethargy and intermittent loss of appetite.

Of the dogs I groom with diagnosed food allergies, well over half (84%) of them are allergic to chicken.
However, dogs and cats skin issues can be the result of a variety of things.

Your pets skin and/or coat condition could be a symptom of a more serious and life threatening illness. If you notice a skin or coat condition developing, please make an appointment with your vet. Attempting to diagnose your dog or cat with allergies can result in a missed diagnoses, and a serious and potentially treatable condition could turn deadly.

I am not a vet, and I am not a skin specialist by any means. However, I have been collecting data on all the animals I have groomed for the last 8 years that I have lived on the Long Beach Peninsula. I log pets age, approximate breed, weight, and any special needs they have into an Excel Spreadsheet.I also have thousands of photographs of dogs and cats, and their skin and coats.

I have used this spreadsheet to create a database. I am now able to query allergies, skin diseases, disorders, and trends. What a game changer indeed.

Let's talk eye boogies. At home care can prevent complications resulting in infection, and potentially loss of vision.

Did you know that you can remove these pesky little buggers without ever touching them with your hands? Use a warm, soft, clean, moist cloth, or eye wipe. Lightly moisten eye corners, and allow moisture to sit for a minute or two,l. Then take a flea comb and scoop boogies out. They should slide out real easy.

To prevent future boogies from sticking to, and staining your pets fur, put a smidge of KY Jelly in eye corners, where fur typically stains.

After an hour, the average in-car temperature is 43 degrees higher than the outdoor temperature. After 90 minutes, this rises 48 degrees higher. Therefore, when it's 90 degrees outside, it could reach an incredible 138 degrees in your parked car. That's hotter than any outdoor temperature ever recorded on earth!

Exciting News!
For the next two weeks all our adult cats and dogs are Pets of the Week!
Our shelter is participating in the Bissell Pet Foundation's Empty the Shelters adoption event. During the event, the adoption fees for our adult shelter dogs and cats ( 1-8 years old) are reduced to just $50 for dogs and $25 for cats. Our normal fees are $75-$300 for dogs and $55 for cats, so this event is a great chance to bring home a new pet at a reduced rate!
Event dates are Tuesday- Saturday, May 2-6, and Tuesday May 9 through Saturday May 13. Pre-approval of an adoption application is required before the adoption process is completed. If you are interested in adopting during this great opportunity, view available pets online at our website www.beachpets.com and submit an application electronically. Please submit your adoption application as soon as possible so that we can complete the screening process before the end of the event.

Micah and his Easter ears. ❤️

Wishing you all a lovely Spring on the Long Beach Peninsula. Please remember, Spring and Summer are peak flea and tick season. It can be difficult to rid your pet and household of these pests once they have laid their eggs.

If you are not currently using a monthly flea maintenance treatment, now is the time to talk to your local vet about the best option for your pet.

I guarantee it will be you who is rescued.
