Cat nails should be checked and trimmed at LEAST every 6 weeks. Some ages and breeds may need their nails trimmed sooner but it really depends on each individual cat. As a general rule of thumb—at least inspect on a regular basis.

Extending the claws from their sheaths to cut them can be easily done by gently depressing their paw pad. Remember older/arthritic cats can feel the arthritic discomfort in their pads so do not push hard and defer to a professional when unsure. The goal is to keep them short so when they draw in their claws it will not be exposed causing accidental scratching.

Avoiding the quick is essential, so stay calm and stay focused! Keeping some coagulant on hand can be helpful if you accidentally cut too close. Even if it seems scary, it needs to be done for the health and safety of your cat. For more information, check out our article “Me-Owch!”

Interesting Cat Anatomy Fact: The claw grows directly from the last phalange (toe bone) and the purpose of this structure is to provide stability and bear the weight of the cat. It is an extremely vital part of orthopedic health.

We cannot stress enough the importance of routine maintenance grooming for all cats, but especially Persians.

Persian cats are high maintenance animals. Without regular nail trims their claws can indeed embed in their paws. Without frequent eye care their eye area will stain and develop crust. Without daily combing and baths at least monthly they will mat.

We clean, dry and powder the eyes of our Persians cats twice a day at a minimum, once when we wake and once before bed.Some owners may be able to get away with only cleaning and powdering once a day.

We comb at least once a day with a high quality greyhound style comb. Spraying your comb with a brushing/grooming spray before combing is a great way to help keep your car’s coat conditioned, detangled and frizz free.

For show cats and kittens we bathe and blow-dry once a week and before their baths we trim their nails and clean their ears. Weekly bathing helps to keep them in full coat.

Retired show cats and breeding adults get bathed and blow-dried bi-weekly or at a minimum once monthly depending on individual needs. We trim their nails every other week and clean their ears before their baths. Even if they are cut into lion cuts we still bathe at least monthly and comb daily to prevent potential matting.

We introduce our kittens to grooming early to make sure that when it comes time for their future owners to do their part in their grooming that it’ll be a breeze. Once their eyes are open we start eye maintenance. We start cutting their nails, giving weekly baths and blow-drying at 6 weeks.

Please stay on top of routine maintenance grooming for your cats to ensure that they are happy and healthy.

Nautilus Persians is dedicated to preserving the Persian breed. Our focus is on breeding show standard Pure bi-color Persians with no Himalayan or Exotic in their pedigrees.

Pure Persian cats and kittens have registration prefix numbers starting with a “0” or “1”. All of our Nautilus Persians have registration prefix numbers that begin with a “0” or “1”.

If a “Persian” cat or kitten has a Himalayan in its pedigree their registration prefix will start with with a “3” and they are not a pure Persian.

Furthermore if a “Persian” cat or kitten has a registration prefix that starts with a “7”, they have an Exotic Shorthair in their pedigree and are in fact a long-haired Exotic and not a Persian.

Pedigreed cats make up only about 5% of the entire domestic cat population. Preservation breeders ensure that this small feline population survives.
